This is Armagh... a story of our City and area that has a unique sense of place in Ireland with a significance and influence felt across the island for 6,500 years.

We are at the heart of celebrating the life of Saint Patrick and a major destination on the Saint Patrick’s Trail.

There are many special things to experience in Armagh ranging from the historically unique Navan Fort, Ireland’s only Planetarium, stunning National Trust properties, unmatched Georgian architecture, Armagh Public Library, Northern Ireland’s oldest library, two Saint Patrick’s Cathedrals, the amazing green space of the Mall and the chance to indulge in all manner of activities in a beautiful natural environment.

The imposing twin spires of the Catholic Cathedral overlook the City on an elevated site. It was on this hill on the17th March 1840 that the foundation stone for Saint Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral was laid by Archbishop Crolly. It was over 60 years before the Cathedral was completed, with consecration on 24th July 1904.

Saint Patrick founded his Great Church on the hill of Armagh in 445AD. The present building dates from 1268 and was last restored in 1834.

The Cathedral contains an 11th century Celtic Cross and a number of sculptures from the Iron Age to the 20th century. The High King of Ireland, Brian Ború, was buried in the Cathedral grounds in 1014.

Armagh Planetarium offers visitors a unique experience which is quite simply “out of this world”. In the Planetarium’s amazing Digital Theatre you can relax and experience our planet and beyond; take a tour of the night sky, or even discover some of the myths behind the star constellations. Armagh Public Library is the oldest library in Northern Ireland, founded in 1771 by Archbishop Richard Robinson as part of his plans to establish

a university. The nucleus of the collection is Archbishop Robinson’s own library, containing 17th and 18th century books on many subjects.

Also an accredited museum, the Library holds ancient Irish artefacts such as stone axes, flint arrowheads and bronze implements.

The Library also holds resources to aid family history research.

Built in 1772 as the Diocesan Registry to hold records for the Church of Ireland Diocese, this Grade A listed building has been restored and is open to the public. While the records are no longer retained in the

building, examples are on display, with ancient coins, gems, significant prints, early Christian artefacts and other collections and curiosities which

belong to Armagh Public Library. There are also opportunities to explore the collections in more detail, through the use of touch screens making

Vicar’s Hill an interactive experience, suitable for all ages.

Opened in 1937 as Ireland’s first County Museum, the building contains rich and diverse collections ranging from prehistoric artefacts to household items from a bygone age. There is also a rich collection of costumes and uniforms as well as natural history and transport memorabilia.

Visitors can enjoy regular temporary exhibitions, a variety of workshops focusing on life in the past and opportunities for smaller groups to glimpse behind the scenes and “explore the stores.” For student & researcher the reference library is a rich resource of books, maps and photographs.

The Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich Memorial Library and Archive was established in 1999 and holds nationally and internationally important collections on Irish and church history, the Irish language and Irish Sport as well as the Irish Overseas Archive relating to migration to continental Europe since the sixteenth century. The library houses more than 40,000 books dating from as early as the fifteenth century and several hundred periodical titles as well as a fine collection of historical artefacts. The library and archive is an independent trust and can be accessed and used free of charge. Visitors are welcome, group visits by prior arrangements. Conference facilities and a genealogy service are also available [fees on request].

Visitors are welcome to stroll around the beautifully landscaped grounds and Astropark of the Armagh Observatory. These contain scale models of the Solar System and the Universe: two sundials, historic telescopes and telescope domes, the innovative sonic-art installation “aroundNorth”, and the Armagh Human Orrery, the first of its kind in the world.

Milford House Collections

Milford House is the former seat of the extraordinary McCrum family, one of Ireland’s premier linen manufacturing dynasties. The wonder of its age, the most technologically advanced in 19th century Ireland. World famous as home of William McCrum who invented the penalty kick. Later home to Manor House School. Today the house is a derelict listed building at risk and privately owned.

The magnificent collections from Milford House are displayed in a beautiful house nearby with fascinating interiors. Includes stunning McCrum family possessions, the Somerset House London collections, and fine works of art.

William McCrum Park - Home of Penalty Kick

This park is the site which makes Milford village in County Armagh world famous. In 1890 this was the football pitch where William McCrum [1865-1932], a goal keeper in Milford football club and son of R.G McCrum of Milford House, invented the penalty kick rule in football which has since been adapted and is now used throughout the world in many sports. The place which revolutionised the world of sport is now a public park with a bust of Mr. McCrum by celebrated Belfast artist D.P Pettigrew. Information panels explain the story of the penalty kick and the extraordinary model village of Milford which was created by the McCrum family, one of Ireland’s premier linen manufacturing dynasties.

The home of Dan Winter where the Orange Order was born in 1795.

The cottage built in the 17th century consists of living quarters, spirit grocers and weavers’ quarters with a full working loom. It is situated at the centre of the site at which the famous Battle of the Diamond took place in 1795 and its timbers still bear the scorch marks from when the house was set alight during the battle. At 94ft long it is believed to be the longest thatched cottage in Ireland. View a collection of Hibernian and Orange regalia from all over the world.

Ancestral home of the Winter family since 1665, this listed building was made famous following the Battle of the Diamond, where the decision to form the Orange Order was taken in the siting room of the house on 21st September 1795. This thatched, mud walled farmhouse was restored in 2000 with a large proportion of the original fabric being conserved. There is a wide range of artefacts on display including vintage farm machinery and original farm buildings in the farmyard. Located 240 yards from the Diamond Crossroads.

The Argory is a stunning nineteenth century Victorian mansion furnished as it was in the early part of the twentieth century. It includes a fully working Bishops & Son Cabinet barrel organ which is played regularly throughout the season. Visit the award winning Courtyard Coffee Shop for freshly baked homemade scones and pick up a bargain in the second-hand bookshop or National Trust gift shop.

Ardress is perhaps best known for its stunning plasterwork in the drawing room. Originally a fairly plain farmhouse, Ardress has been added to over the centuries, mainly by the Ensor family. Original enclosed farmyard houses a collection of tools and horse-drawn machinery as well as a number of farmyard animals.

These miniature bronze sculptures hidden around the streets get children excited as they embark on an adventure to track

them down. The curious creatures are hidden amongst the City’s historic buildings, architecture and streets.

“StarStone” by Richard Perry Location: Market Square

This 5.5m sculpture made of local Armagh Marble takes inspiration from Armagh’s long curiosity with the night sky, but also the way its Cathedrals

seemingly reach for the sky.

“Market Days and Fair Days” by Eleanor Wheeler Location: Market Square

Situated in Market Square, the centre of commerce in Armagh City for hundreds of years, this ceramic wall art depicts the traditional ‘journey’

to market. The panels depict the produce taken to market as well as the musicians, storytellers and rhymers that entertained the crowds.

“Celestial Sphere” by Brian Connolly Location: Upper English Street

The brightest stars of the night sky have been mapped onto this 2m diameter sphere. The sphere is aligned to the north with the stars correctly orientated towards the pole star. The sphere is set on granite stones engraved with information about the history of Astronomy over more than 2,000 years.

“For the Love of Emer” by Martin Heron Location: Scotch Street | Dobbin Street

This sculpture depicts the famous Irish Hero Cuchulainn, as he goes to the Isle of Skye to learn the art of balancing on the butt of a spear or the rim of a shield. All this effort was to prove himself to the father of Emer. You can hear the story of Cuchulainn at the Navan Centre & Fort.

“Saints and Scholars Railings” by David Dudgeon Location: Dobbin Street Lane | Friary Road

These railings are inspired by the legacy of Saint Patrick, referencing the intricate architecture of our two Cathedrals as well as the Celtic imagery of the ‘Book of Armagh’.

Armagh Gaol is one of Northern Ireland’s most important landmark buildings. Steeped in history, for most of its working life Armagh Gaol was the primary women’s prison in Northern Ireland until its closure in 1986. The Gaol is Grade B+ listed and today it operates as a pop-up tourist attraction, giving the public the opportunity to see the Gaol in its original state.

This event organised by Armagh Athletic Club supported by the then Armagh City and District Council began life in 1990 as part of International Sport and Cultural week linking it to a series of events throughout Ireland. The event has developed over time and now attracts athletes of the highest elite standards from all over the world including America, Europe, Africa and Russia, in addition to the hundreds of local athletes from all over the UK and Ireland.

This combination of participation and elite performance has made this event in recent years one of the most significant road races on the

International Calendar with athletes from all over Europe and the United States vying for invitations to take part. In recent years the Men’s 5K has been described as the ‘greatest in-depth 5K Road Race in the World’.The programme consists of 12 races staged on The Mall 1000m circuit lined with spectators, fairy lights and iconic buildings for an evening of exciting and atmospheric action.

Saint Patrick’s Festival10th - 20th March

Armagh has a proud link with Saint Patrick. The city, along with Downpatrick, another key location with strong connections to the Saint place themselves at the centre of the March celebrations.

Armagh was the location for Patrick’s first stone church in Ireland, founded where the current Saint Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral now stands and the city is proud of its two magnificent cathedrals and its strong Patrician legacy.

The International Saint Patrick’s Day Festival takes place from 10-20 March with events happening across Armagh and Downpatrick. The festival as a whole includes elements to appeal to all ages and interests including drama, sacred, traditional and classical music, language, culture, tours, walks, art, and comedy. The main event on 17th March takes the form of a carnival procession with cultural entertainment.

The Tommy Makem International Festival of Song invites the song people of the world to gather around Armagh, heartland of Irish myth and legend, for the annual event.

Apple Blossom Festival May

The Apple Blossom Festival takes place in May each year and centres on the Manor Estate and Country Park in Loughgall. There are numerous events across the area at this time.

Armagh is known as the Orchard County and towards the north of the county every hillside is covered almost exclusively with rows of Bramley apples. In early May during the Apple Blossom event the hillsides are in full bloom with white and pink blossom that lasts for only a short while.

Armagh Bramley Apple enjoys an unrivalled reputation for fruit firmness, colour and keeping quality. The Armagh Bramley Apple was awarded the esteemed Protected Geographical Indicator [PGI] status in 2012 seeing this humble fruit sit beside other elite products such as Parma Ham and Champagne.

Bramleys are cooking apples used for a variety of produce such as juice or cider and the Apple Blossom event presents to the public how to cook their famous apple. Apple Blossom gives the general public the unique opportunity to see how the Armagh Bramley apple industry still values quality and best practice as an integral part of orchard production.

The John Hewitt Society was formed in 1987 to commemorate the life and work of the renowned Northern Irish poet who died that year. The Summer School is an internationally renowned festival of literature and the arts. The School adopts a specific theme each year and provides a safe, neutral and unthreatening space to explore these themes.

The School takes place in the wonderful, modern surroundings of the Marketplace Theatre and Arts Centre in Armagh.

Each year it attracts people from all over Ireland, Britain, Europe and the United States to experience the wide range of distinct, though linked, cultural events, including creative writing workshops, poetry study, discussion and readings, open debate, music, drama, film and visual arts.

The residential nature of the Summer School provides opportunities for people from all communities to live, work and socialise together throughout the week, encouraging interdependence. In order to maximise participation, the School works in partnership with local councils, arts organisations, community organisations and businesses to provide bursaries to individuals who might otherwise be excluded from attending School.

According to the rules of the Bol Chumann na hÉireann , the Irish Road Bowling Association, the road bowler throws a 28-ounce [1.75 pounds or 800 grams] cast-iron sphere that looks like a small cannonball.

It’s called a ‘bowl’ in County Cork, but in County Armagh fans call it a ‘bullet’. The road bowler tries to move the bullet from the start to the finish of a pre-determined course in as few drives or throws as possible.

Today road bowling is a popular competitive sport where it is played, but the most vigorous competitions are in two Irish Counties: Armagh and Cork.

Charles Wood Summer SchoolAugustCharles Wood, the renowned musician and composer, was born at 11 Vicars’ Hill, Armagh in 1866 and received his early musical education as a chorister in the Cathedral opposite his home. He later studied at the Royal College of Music and later became a Professor of music at Cambridge University.

When Wood died in 1926, he left behind a legacy of over 250 sacred works including hymn tunes, songs, music for Greek plays and chamber music. It is largely his sacred music that he is remembered for today and this is why the focus of the Summer School is music in worship.

William Kennedy Piping FestivalNovember

The William Kennedy Piping Festival organised by Armagh Pipers Club [founded 1966] was inaugurated in November 1994 as part of a year long initiative proposed by Armagh City and District Council entitled ‘Armagh Together’.

The Armagh Pipers Club decided to create a new event to commemorate the life and work of the 18th Century piper, pipe maker and extraordinary inventive genius William Kennedy.

The Mall

The Mall or Commons has been central to the leisure activities of Armagh’s citizens for over 200 years. From 1731- 1773 it was a horse-racing course with monthly trading fairs in the central area. In 1765 Archbishop Robinson arrived and began a plan to redevelop Armagh as a City to rival Dublin.

The Commons and its raucous pursuits did not fit in with the Archbishop’s vision for a new City. He gifted the new mall to the citizens of Armagh as a public

walkway. Over the years the tree-lined promenade became an area for sports such as cricket, football and rugby. Care of the Mall was left in the hands of the Mall Trustees, and by 2003 a partnership was formed along with the then Armagh City and District Council.

The Heritage Lottery Fund granted an award for refurbishment which aimed to update the facilities of the Mall without losing its unique character. In 2005 the Mall won the Civic Trust Award and the Irish Architecture Award.

The Armagh Observatory Grounds and Astropark

The Armagh Observatory is a modern astronomical research institute, the oldest scientific institution in Northern Ireland. Founded by Archbishop Richard Robinson in 1789, it stands in approximately 14 acres of attractive, landscaped gardens which are open all year round during daylight hours. A walk through the Astropark is a stroll through the Universe. The path starts close to the Planetarium car park and leads to a scale model of the Solar System in which every three paces corresponds to 100 million km in space. The Palace Demesne Public Park

Situated within walking distance of the City Centre, for over two hundred years the undulating parkland of the Palace Demesne has been one of the glories of Armagh. The Demesne, comprising some 300 acres, is the creation of Archbishop Richard Robinson. The Palace was the residence of the Archbishops of the Church of Ireland from 1770 to 1975. The walks around the Demesne vary in distance and effort, taking you into the back meadows and around the more formal gardens. There is also a chance to relax in the ‘Garden of the Senses’ created

to provide a sensory experience that will appeal to both able-bodied and disabled visitors, the garden is made up of five distinct areas linked by a winding path. The park includes a modern accessible Play Park and Green Gym. There is also a restaurant; The Moody Boar.

The Palace Gardens are also extremely popular for wedding photography and can be booked for a reasonable cost.

Armagh is renowned as the ‘Orchard County’ or the ‘Orchard of Ireland’. The area comes alive with colour as the pink flowers of the apple trees blanket much of the deep green landscape.

There is a history of apple growing in Armagh dating back 3,000 years.Saint Patrick planted an apple tree at Ceangoba, an ancient settlement east of the City.

Saint Patrick’s Way: The Pilgrims Walk

Saint Patrick’s Way: The Pilgrim’s Walk is a 132 km (82 mile) trail connecting key Christian heritage sites in Armagh and Downpatrick, the two locations on the island of Ireland most closely related to St Patrick.

The way is suitable for leisure walking and pilgrimages. It begins at the Navan Centre outside Armagh City, winding through beautiful landscapes and historic cities to end at Saint Patrick’s final resting place at Down Cathedral in Downpatrick. The Pilgrim’s Walk in its entirety takes between 6-10 days, depending on your pace and is signposted.

A guide to the walk is also available, free of charge from Visitor Information Centres which describes the route and provides more detailed maps to enable you to also walk it. In addition, you can pick up a Pilgrim’s Passport at Armagh Visitor Information Centre. Stamp it at the 10 locations along the route, as a souvenir of your journey. When you show your completed Passport at the Saint Patrick’s Centre in Downpatrick, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
