The Signs of Being Engaged and Impassioned In Your Work Life

by Jack Mateffy

What does having a high level of personal engagement at work look like? Is it perceptible by co-workers, customers, or leadership?

During a recent trip to Yosemite National Park, our family stayed in a lodge storied in over 90 years of history and service to visitors to this treasured park. The lodge was perfectly placed in the Yosemite Valley in front of Yosemite Falls. The setting was breathtaking. The hotel’s architecture was beautifully crafted in the early 19th century and stands as striking today as when it was first build. It was only hours after arriving at the hotel that the stress of our busy home life melted to the forest floor.

In addition to the lodge’s backdrop and design, what made our stay truly memorable was the passion demonstrated by the staff. Each employee we meet seemed fully engaged in the work they did at the property. The level of service to customers was sincere and enthusiastic. Every question we asked was answered. There was a palpable sense of pride as they answered each of our special requests. These were just a few of the sign we noticed of this group of

people fully engaged and committed to their jobs. The overpowering sense was that each staff member we encountered wanted to be there. In turn, it made us want to be there.

So how impassioned are you about your job? Compare these signs of being highly engaged at work with your own work experience. You:• Feel fulfilled and have a strong

sense of purpose.• Are self-motivated.• Enjoy a healthy and productive

work life.• Feel challenged and creative.• Foster positive change.• Project enthusiasm when serving

customers.• Enjoy coming to work.• Think clearly and are innovative. • Are engrossed in what you’re

doing. • Feel trusted and valued.

Which of these signs describes you? Which would you like to be more present in your work life?
