Are You Ready for Catholic Schools Week?
What is National Catholic Schools Week?
Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United
States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is January 29 - February 4.
The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith,
Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open
houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these
events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to
our church, our communities and our nation.
15
Catholic Schools Week 2017:
January 29-February 4th
• Nation-wide awareness of Catholic education
• Time for us to reflect on the mission we are working for
• Opportunity to recognize students, parents, and staff
16
Why is Catholic Schools Week Important?
Catholic schools offer academic excellence and
faith-filled education for students nationwide.
• National test scores, high school graduation rates,
college attendance and other data show that Catholic
schools frequently outperform schools in both the
public and private sectors. While some Catholic
schools are challenged by declining enrollments and
school closures, the good news is that there is still a
strong demand and enthusiasm for Catholic schools.
• Nearly thirty percent of Catholic schools have waiting
lists for admission and new schools are opening
across the country.
• This infographic shares facts and figures about the
ongoing excellence and promise of growth
represented in our country's Catholic schools.

Examples of a Weekly Themes
Catholic schools benefit all year long from the religious guidance, prayers and support parishes provide. Many parishes join in the National Catholic Schools Week celebration by devoting a Mass to Catholic education. Schools start the week by inviting parishioners, RE families and community members to parish-centered events and school open houses that feature their outstanding academic programs, religious education and service opportunities.
28
Sunday - In Our Parish
• Students participation in the Mass: Greeters, ushers, gift bearers, and readers
• Students speak at Mass on why they think Catholic Education is important
• Invite the Parish to tour the school after the Masses
29
Sunday - In Our Parish
• Have a slideshow of pictures or video of the school being displayed during the open house
• A school will have students will attend in uniform and student essay contest on what they love about their school and speak at Mass. At the Open House they will have a Preschool Art Show and the older students will have a Science Olympiad Demonstrations
30
Sunday - In Our Parish
A central aspect of Catholic education is learning the importance of service to others. When students take part in service activities—both local and beyond—they demonstrate the values and faith they gain through their Catholic education and learn how to make the world a better place. When they observe how others serve the community, they gain an appreciation for how they can continue to serve others their entire lives.
31
Monday - In Our Community
• Have students go on field trips: visit the nursing home, fire station, pick up trash, make and deliver lunches to the homeless shelter
• Send cards to the Nursing Home, RE program, Ministries within the Church, local Children’s Hospital, Fire station, and/or Police station

HATS OFF TO BLUE ISLAND
Catholic Schools Week Assembly and Luncheon
Monday, January 30, 2017
CSW Theme: Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service
Purpose:
1. To bring an awareness to the students about the various businesses and city offices in the City of Blue Island and their various roles in the community.
2. To network with the city and thank them for their service.
3. To invite local businesses into our church and school for a celebration that honors them and invites them to know more about us.
4. Fulfill one of our Marketing Goals that includes networking with the city businesses and offices of Blue Island to attract more attention to our school and market
to a larger audience.
5. To engage in this activity close to the Gala to solicit continued or new support and sponsorships from local businesses and offices.
6. To videotape classroom visits to the community to enhance multi-media coverage, including social media communications, and websites about the event and St.
Benedict School.
7. To market the event in coordination with The Office of Catholic Schools. (OCS has a huge interest in this event)
Process:
November 9, 2016
Every Grade level chooses 2 or 3 businesses of interest to visit and interview during the month of December.
Weeks of December 5 and 12
Grade level teacher call ahead to the business of interest to set up the appointment for the classroom visit. The visit includes taking pictures and taking notes
during the interview. A summary of the visit is written up that follows the format of the samples attached. If visiting two places, half page summary of each visit is
written.
This would be a great time to utilize the use of Thinking Maps and December’s area of concentration: Taking Information Off of the Map for speaking and writing.

Monday - In Our Community
Schools celebrate students during National Catholic Schools Week by planning enjoyable
and meaningful activities for them and recognizing their accomplishments. They encourage
students to reflect on the benefits of Catholic education and how the grounding in faith,
knowledge and service it provides will help them throughout their lives.
34
Tuesday: Celebrating Your Students
• Students look forward to Catholic Schools Week
• Celebrating your students is important key to retention
• Consider having students participate in a bottle flipping tournament or doing their annual staff/student volleyball game
35
Tuesday: Celebrating Your Students
On National Appreciation Day for Catholic Schools, students,
families, educators and other Catholic school supporters
communicate the value of Catholic education to government
leaders. They share information with leaders on the significant
contributions Catholic schools make to
the nation and their role in preparing
students to be good citizens.
They pray for the nation and
recognize all those who serve it.
36
Wednesday: Celebrating the Nation
• Invite local leaders to the school. Give them a tour, have them
speak with some of the students. If a local leader went to a
Catholic School have them talk about their experience in
Catholic Education.
• Consider inviting the alderman or
local official to come and speak
about his/her experience in
Catholic Education and how it
impacted him today
37
Wednesday: Celebrating the Nation
By focusing on faith, knowledge and service, Catholic schools
prepare children to use their God-given talents to the fullest later in
life. National Catholic Schools Week offers an opportunity for
students to explore the many life paths that enable them to use their
talents well in the service of God and others — by answering the
call to a religious vocation, by nurturing a family through
sacramental marriage, by volunteering in
church activities and charities, and/or by
pursuing a career that makes the world
a better place.
38
Thursday: Celebrating Vocations
• Invite a Priest, Deacon or Nun to come and talk
• Reach out to orders who are doing amazing works
• Invite the different ministries to speak to the children and how they can be involved in the Church
39
Thursday: Celebrating Vocations
On this day, schools will honor teachers and principals as well as administrators and staff who support them in their important work and thank the parents, grandparents, alumni, parishioners and school board members who provide volunteer service.
40
Friday: Celebrating Faculty, Staff and
Volunteers
• Send Thank you letters:
• Teachers: along with letters, also consider a luncheon, gifts, or soliciting notes from students and parents
• Parents: thank them for making sacrifices in order to provide their kids a great Catholic Education
• Volunteers
• Donors
• Alumni
41
Friday: Celebrating Faculty, Staff and
Volunteers
• St. Gall the pass two years had a Donor Day on Monday morning. They sent invitations to all the Donors the 1st of January. The event started at 8:30 with light breakfast. The Pastor and principal spoke and thank the Donors and the students made the Donors thank you cards. The Marketing Director gave the Donors a tour of the school.
42
Friday: Celebrating Faculty, Staff and
Volunteers
• Talent Show
• Grandparents Day
• An event on Friday evening for the entire school
• Might combine with the theme for Saturday
43
Friday: Celebrating Faculty, Staff and
Volunteers
Parents, guardians and other family members play a vital role in Catholic education. Not only do they volunteer at the school, they instill values and expectations for academic excellence in their children at home. We acknowledge the role of families in Catholic education and celebrate their contributions to the success of our schools on the last day of National Catholic Schools Week and all year long.
44
Saturday: Celebrating Families
• Encourage families to spend time together on Saturday
• Set up a Facebook contest to see which classroom can share the most photos of family activities
• If you are able to host an event on-site, consider a retention event such as a family game night, reading night, or movie night.
• Consider an off-site event like asking alocal sports team, theatre group or museum to provide a group discountfor your families.
45
Saturday: Celebrating Families
Catholic Schools Week is more than having fun every day. It should be a celebration of faith, families and our children’s future.
Bring together a panel of Religious to do Q&A with all children.
Bring in speakers such as authors, professionals, role models –particularly those who are alumni - to enrich education and provide examples of quality programming.
Encourage students and teachers to work with one another. Give
students the chance to get to know the school a bit better and to learn
more about the next grade. Remind students and families over and over
that they are valued and that we want them back next year!
