- the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history and the only one classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale
- 31 people died directly because of explosion
- official numbers of deaths in case of radiation provided by World Health Organization estimated 9,000 deaths and some 200,000 people sickened in 2005 but the real numbers are even more higher

Informations before
It lies about 250 km north of Tokyo. Owner is Tokyo electric Co. Fukushima was nuclear power plant with highest performance until disaster.
Reactors 4,5 and 6 had been shut down prior to the earthquake for planned maintenance. The remaining reactors were shut down automatically after the earthquake but the subsequent 14-metre tsunami flooded the plant, knocking out emergency generators needed to run pumps which cool and control the reactors. The flooding and earthquake damag prevented assistance being brought from elsewhere.
