    Community Manager’s Corner: Jamie Harper

Ardiente HOA WebsiteRMI Management, LLC has a website for all Ardiente residents. Owners have full access including an individualized private and secure account. Tenants may also be provided limited access to the website. If you are not  already registered for this website, please call 643-0226 or email for assistance. The website allows for resident to:* Review live account status           * Report a landscape or maintenance issue* Update Contact Information          * Retrieve Association Forms* Email the community Manager     * Request a mailing or email address change* Report non-compliance of the CC&R’s         * Review upcoming events at the community

    NEW WEB ADDRESS http://nevada.fsrconnect.com/ardientehomeownersassociation

Please DO NOT feed the pigeons!!! Recently there has been a growing pigeon population in the community. This can become a considerable issue. Pigeons tend to spread disease and will nest in roofing and light fixtures, leaving droppings where residents may walk and play. The Association has been cleaning particularly bad areas, but needs help from the community in order to ensure that this does not become a safety issue. Here is how you can help:

    · Please DO NOT feed the pigeons!!! The more food the pigeons have, the more pigeons will take up residence in the community. This can result in overpopulation of the pigeons in one area, which will breed disease within the bird population, and make their presence more harmful to people.· Ensure that all food garbage is placed in a sealed plastic bag prior to placing it in the proper garbage container. This is another source of food for pigeons.· Ensure that you do not litter food products throughout the community including the park areas.· If you notice people feeding the pigeons, please contact Management at 643-0226.

Help keep the community clean and safe!

    Shea Homes Update:

Kyle Tibbitts, our new Shea Homes Community Manager, says “sales are fantastic!” He would like to thank all the residents who have referred potential buyers.

    • Since February 1st to date (March 21st, date of interview), 21 homes have been purchased.

    • 4 new home buyers have recently come from Hawaii (and they don’t even know each other!)

    • 20 new homes are currently under construction, and 12 more are scheduled to start in April

    • the “Nice” model is the most popular model• Ardiente currently has 348 homes “closed” and is on track to pass 420 by

year’s end• OUR EXISTING HOMES ARE APPRECIATING!

Kyle has spent the past 10 years with Shea, and was recruited right out of college, where he graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Construction Management. He spent 7 years at Trilogy La Quinta before coming here. He is currently working on getting his MBA, the executive program, also from BYU. He works all day, studies at night, and returns to BYU every other weekend.

Kyle is happily married to his wife, a music education graduate and classically trained singer, and has 2 daughters and a son. One more child is on the way. They enjoy family time together, and love hiking in Red Rock.

Kyle is very approachable, and swears he really does return emails!

    ST. PATRICK’S DAY POTLUCK 2013

There is only one word to describe the St. Patrick’s Day Potluck and that is “FANTASTIC”!! It started with the attendance of 78 residents and guests, which was the largest turnout so far for an event. As usual when Ardiente residents sign up for potluck you can be assured that the food will be the caliber of a Michelin awarded restaurant!

Attendees were treated to delicious corned beef and cabbage, catered by Ann Marie Scott from The Lunch Crew Catering.  (Anna works out of Mulligans). The residents’ potluck dishes included the trimmings to complete the meal. In the corner of the Fiesta Room was a “groaning” table of every kind of dessert you could imagine. Now, can anyone say “potluck” at Ardiente is more than “luck”? The answer is a resounding “YES”!

The evening included a community sing of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” led by Marty Puzio, JoAnn Ernst and Toni DiBella. The conversation and laughter lasted the whole evening.

Thanks to Bobbie and Bob Witt for picking up the corned beef and cabbage from Mulligans. Thanks to Ray Stokes and Marty Puzio for helping set up, to Bobbie Witt and Ruth Klag for serving, to and, especially, to Jack Klag for stepping in at the last minute and coordinating the event. Last, but not least, to the kitchen crew who stepped in and helped with the cleanup. This shows what a great “family” we have at Ardiente. As in the rock song “WE ARE FAMILY”!

If this event is any indication of the future of Ardiente, it looks to be a great year for fun and fellowship in our community!

COMING UP IN JANUARYCOMING UP IN APRIL

A huge thank you to our volunteer Social Group that has stepped in to plan and prepare your Ardiente events, parties, gatherings etc while the Board searches for the next Activities Director. Stay tuned for further announcements, and thanks for your patience. Anyone interested in volunteering on the Social Group should contact Jack Klag. [email protected]

    RESIDENT MIXER APRIL 26th____

If you have any birthdays or anniversaries to celebrate in April, let the desk know, and then come on down the fourth Friday of the month (April 26th) and share in the fun. It is a “blast” and what can be better than to celebrate with the great residents here at Ardiente?

Last month at the mixer the sounds of singing Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary rang through the Fiesta Room with great gusto!

Our monthly honoring of residents with birthdays and anniversaries was a great success. We had a forty-fifth wedding anniversary for John and Conni Tedman (who followed the Zagers champagne lead with bottles for each table) and Helene Lobel’s birthday.

As usual, the attendees brought their favorite drinks and hors d’oeuvres to share. Our wonderful manager, Jamie Harper, provided the group with chips and dips for National Chip and Dip Day, and a delicious cake to celebrate the events. Can’t beat anything when there are chips and dips and cake! Much laughter and conversation could be heard, and the attendees stayed until (as the old adage goes) “The last dog was hung”, but not in a bad connotation, just much fun and friendship.

Please note: Due to the Ardiente Painting schedule, on April 1st the North Gate will be closed, on Wednesday and Thursday April 3rd and 4th, the Main Gate will be closed, and on Saturday April 6th, the South Gate will be closed.

    COMING UP IN APRIL

    April 27, 2013 Rainbow & Bootleg Hike

This hike is a favorite for its solitude, shade and water.  Rainbow Springs and its neighbor, Bootleg Spring have good productivity and are running even in the hotter summer months, so water is always available.  There is a small pool at Rainbow Springs, not enough for swimming, but enough to get some doggie legs wet.  Most people have never heard of Rainbow Springs, so chances are you'll be alone on this hike.  The moderate elevation makes this area a great in-between-seasons area.  When it is a bit too hot in the lower valley, but too cold in the higher elevations, you and your dog will find that this area is usually perfect in temperature.

This fairly easy trail runs about 2.5 miles to a spring with oak trees and petroglyphs at the base of the Red Rock Escarpment west of Blue Diamond (south end of the Red Rock Cliffs). Half a mile away is the Wooden Fence Spring. Access is from the Highway 160 Late Night Parking Lot. Elevation gain is minimal. We will depart the clubhouse at 8am and lunch at TBD.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtfully committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.

    -- Margaret Mead

What is the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?

    -- Henry David Thorea

    Earth Day April 22nd.

Our generation didn't have “the green thing” in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truly recycled. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

    MARCH 2013 HAPPY HOUR

Ardiente did it again! What a great and “Happy” Hour for the month of March. The attendees included new homeowners, “old” (by length of residency not age) homeowners, and great goodies to enjoy.

Marty Puzio, once again, gave the attendees some trivia to answer about March. There was much conversation, interaction and laughter. The attendance has increased, and our Ardiente “family” grows by the day.

    APRIL 2013 HAPPY HOUR

If you haven’t attended one of these events come out on the second Friday of April (the 12th), and take part in this great “home” party. Just bring your favorite “libation”and some good hors d’oeuvres to share. You won’t be disappointed!

Meet your Neighbors: Marilyn and Andy Bereznay

Marilyn and Andy. Both of German and Hungarian heritage. Both Taurus. Both stubborn! (Or so they tell me.)

And they both were born in Lorain, Ohio, on the south shore of Lake Erie. Andy came from a family of five, and lived in Lorain for all of his life with the exception of his four years in the Air Force. He achieved a crew chief rating on the B-52 bomber. On his return he had an interesting assortment of jobs, including a fireman on the railroad, and a manager of a bar. But he also spent a number of years at the Ford Motor Company and retired from the company before moving to Las Vegas.

However, he and Marilyn did not meet until each was quite a bit older. Marilyn went to work in the ninth grade for a florist and ended up continuing in that field for 33 years, moving up to be the manager for a wholesale florist. She had two children with her first husband, a daughter Cheryl and son Michael. Tragically, she lost her daughter to cancer at the remarkably young age of 23. Michael is happily married to Kristi and has two children.

Andy and Marilyn were introduced by mutual friends at the All Nations Club and after a 5 year courtship they married, and will celebrate 28 years this April 20th.

One of their unusal passions was owning, racing, and breeding horses (trotters and pacers). Marilyn’s brother got her involved by buying their first horse, and she continued, with Andy’s help for over many years. They were technically “licensed owner-grooms” and did everything from paddocking their horses, grooming them, all of which was a lot of work. Over the years they owned about 20 horses (not all at the same time!) and raced them in mostly in Ohio, Pennsylvania and MIchigan. It was hard work, costly, but “there is nothing like the feeling when you win that first race!”

Here in Ardiente they are busy. Marilyn is very active with baking, quilting, and the Veterans Auxiliary Club, Andy likes to play poker. The also enjoy going on on their Harley Davidson trike, and, as members of The American Legion Riders Club, participate in parades and honor guards for funerals.

Something you might not know about Andy: he’s owned boats since 1973, starting with a 23 footer, moving up to a 32 footer.Something you might not know about Marilyn: she once worked as a school bus driver, and, from all acounts, ran a pretty tight “ship”!Something you might not know about Marilyn and Andy: they caught and then froze over 100 fish before they left Ohio for Nevada. Word on the street is that there are sometimes fish fries at the Bereznay household on Serenity Haven!

    CLUB NEWS

!e Nimblefin"rs Club completed its quilt project for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Touched by the continued suffering of so many people in New York, Staten Island, and New Jersey, they volunteered to make quilts for them that contained handwritten messages of encouragemnt and support. Though there were guildines for the pattern and size, every quilt turned out different and reflected the colors and personality of the person who made it. We had more than a dozen to donate.

The group voted to donate the quilts to • Bobbie and Bob Witt’s son and daughter-in-law, who lost their house house in the

hurricane, • Tunnels to Towers Siller Foundation, a NY group founded in memory of firefighter

    Veteran’s Club

The Ardiente Veterans’ Club and the Veterans’ Auxiliary Club have undertaken

the task of obtaining a US flag and 30 foot flag pole for the Ardiente community.

Ardiente is one of the few communities in the Las Vegas area that does

not have a flag pole and the clubs would like to correct this

oversight. This is no small undertaking as the cost

will be about $2500, which includes; an

aluminum anodized 30' flag pole, 2

flags, (plus 3 spares which are

    being donated by a Veteran),

    installation of the pole and

    associated electrical work. It

will be located just behind the main entrance of the front gate.

In order to accomplish this, the sponsoring clubs will run fund raising events. The

first is a Pancake Breakfast to be held at the clubhouse the morning of Saturday,

May 4 (more information to follow). We ask that you participate in this event as all

funds raised will go toward the purchase of the flag and flag pole. In addition,

residents who wish to contribute may do so at the Clubhouse with checks made out

    to The Veterans Club.

We are proud to be Americans and want to show our patriotism. We are anticipating a

    dedication on July 4th.

BAKING CLUBABC met in March for a lemon-themed day.  Cottage pudding, Lemon- Pistachio shortbread, and Lemon Knots glazed with Lemon Icing were  all a success and we learned a little about Meyer Lemons,  semolina  flour and arrowroot. We've always used cornstarch as a thickening  agent, but arrowroot will give you a clear sauce instead of cloudy.  We are meeting on April 15 and turning from sweet to savory hoping to  use locally-grown, fresh produce from Gilcrease Farms. We are going

to try our hand at individual quiches, vegetable bread using various  grains and something yet to be determined using tomatoes.  Remember  that you must sign up on-line and pay the $5 fee.  We are limited to  15 people and those that have signed up and paid by April 11 will  have a spot in the kitchen. This tournament will be limited to the first 30 people to sign up and pay. Don’t forget to sign up online!

    THE GOLF CLUB

Just 20 minutes away from home, there were 18 Ardiente neighbors who recently went golfing together.  We spent the day at Los Prados Golf Course located at 5150 Los Prados Circle in Las Vegas.  For just $29.00/person, we were entitled to 18 holes of golf with a cart, a hot dog and a beer.  It was the “deal of the year!”

    • Our individual games....varied• the food and libations were....good• but the company was....priceless!

There are all kinds of golfers from beginners to well-seasoned.  The beauty of this club is that no one cares what category you fall into,  we’re just out to have fun.  Please watch for future golf locations and be prepared to come out and have a good time.

    MARCH 2013 LADIES LUNCH

WOW! First, attendance was great with twenty-five wonderful ladies. Second, the restaurant, Bahama Breeze was wonderful, especially the servers, who attended to every need. And, of course, the menu was not so bad either.

As usual the company is the most important part of these lunches, and it was fantastic, with much laughing and sharing and general good times. The

lunch ended with the attendees being treated to every type of dessert on the menu. Now, if you believe in the adage, “Eat Dessert First”, it works if it comes at the end of the meal too. Their “sugar highs” were at the top, and there was little left on the dessert plates to show for it.

Next month we will be sampling the menu at Lindo Michoacaán, 7870 W Tropical Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV Even though this is Mexican cuisine don’t be afraid to come out and try something, you will always find something good to eat. They do have salads and sandwiches, and the menu can be found at this link: http://www.lindomichoacan.com/menufull.htm

Please sign up early, and as before we will accommodate Ardiente residents first, and have a waiting list if you have guests.

This activity brings “us girls” together and includes much sharing, laughter, and camaraderie you will enjoy!

    Next month: Wednesday April 17th

May’s Ladies Lunch will be on May 15th at the Willows Restaurant at Sun City MacDonald Rach in Henderson, where we will sit out on the patio with this gorgoeus view, and visit with Marilyn Sirna.

An Exciting Weekend in March at the Clubhouse

    ‘REAL DONUTS” WIN COMPETITION!!!

The weekend of March 9th and 10th was exciting at the clubhouse. It was filled with nonstop events starting at 9am on Saturday morning. In the morning there was complimentary coffee, iced tea, water and donuts along with various discussions among residents on a myriad of topics. Throughout the day there were chair massages. Afternoon events included complimentary physical activities such as circuit training, Have a Ball, Pilates/ Yoga/Balance, and Ballroom Dancing. The highlight of Saturday was the margaritas, chips and salsa.

Sunday started much the same as Saturday with complimentary coffee, iced tea, water and donuts. Again, there was conversation and discussion among residents. There was complimentary fitness equipment orientation to introduce those unfamiliar with the equipment to how to properly use the gym equipment. Games were also played— hand and foot in the afternoon and poker in the evening. The NASCAR race was shown on the big screen and complimentary beer, wine, non- alcoholic beverages and snacks were provided during the race.

Each morning there was a donut tasting contest where residents got to taste donuts by three different bakeries and vote on the one they thought the best. Donuts in the competition were from Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme and Real Donuts. There were 57 votes cast and Real Donuts won by a landslide—results were Real donuts – 34 votes, Krispy Kreme – 17 votes, and Dunkin Donuts

A heartfelt thank-you to all the residents who donated over 100 pairs! of shoes for the Soles for Souls shoe drive. Amazing generosity from so many of you! Sure is nice to help those who have so much less than we do.

    Sincerely,Mickie Ottery

    AARP

Driver Safety ClassSaturday, May 18th from 9 AM to 1 PM.

The next AARP Driver Safety Class for Ardiente is scheduled for MAY 18TH.This class will be held in our clubhouse for our residents. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. The class will help participants recognize differences that we all encounter as we mature and how these differences could affect our driving ability.

Also, the State of Nevada, mandates that all automobile insurance companies doing business in Nevada provide each person who successfully completes this class, and has a good driving record, a discount on their automobile insurance premium each year for the next three years.

For your information, do not enter your home address on your GPS under the listing of “Home”. Use our Clubhouse address (5840 Summit Green) for your home address; you can then find your way home from there. But this wont do any good if your Automobile Registration and Proof of Insurance is not locked in your glove box. If the crook breaks open your glove box – then you have one more indicator for the insurance company that you took reasonable precaution.

Ardiente Community Hiking Enthusiasts plan a 2 1/2 day trip to Bryce Canyon

    May 10th-12th

Bryce Canyon National Park is a national park located in southwestern Utah in the United States. The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors. Bryce sits at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion National Park. The rim at Bryce varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 m).

The group will be leaving on Friday May 10th and car pooling, staying two nights in the park. Since the park books up early, most of the group have already booked rooms at the Best Western Plus Bryce Canyon Grand Hotel, Best Western Ruby’s Inn ,and the Bryce Pioneer Village Hotel but anyone interested who can make their own arrangements for accomodations is welcome to sign up online (so we know whom to expect), and join us for hikes and activities. The drive is about 4 hours. More information will be following.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK by Fred Meyer

Despite its name Death Valley National Park is a jewel of a national park which is right in our backyard. It is the largest national park in the lower 48 states with 3.4 million acres of diverse scenery and attractions which make a one day trip or a several day trip a must do activity for those of us living in Ardiente.

Originally an area of lakes, marshes, and streams 10000 years ago, Death Valley is now the hottest, driest, and lowest national park. It is the home of the Timbisha Shoshone who have a reservation within the park. The California Gold Rush in 1849 brought miners called “49ers” to attempt a shortcut through the valley. As they left the valley, one miner is reported to have said “Goodbye Death Valley” and thus was the valley named.

Visits to Death Valley should usually be done during the October to April time period of lower temperatures. Furnace Creek where the majority of facilities are located is also where the Park Visitor Center is located. The hottest temperature ever recorded at Furnace Creek was 134 degrees F on July 10, 1913.

If you only want to make a one day visit, Furnace Creek is 131 miles from Ardiente – about 2 ½ hours. After you enter the park, watch for a turnoff to Dante’s View. The 13 mile long road takes you to Dante’s View which offers an exceptional view of the valley floor and surrounding mountains. After returning to CA 190W, watch for a sign to Zabriskie Point which offers a multicolored view of the hills of Death Valley. Continue on CA 190W to the Furnace Creek area where you will find food, a borax museum, and the Park Visitor Center. Then visit Badwater, the lowest point in North America, for a short walk over the salt flats and then drive the Artists Palette Road for a scenic loop through multi-hued volcanic and sedimentary hills. If time permits, stops at Golden Canyon and The Borax Works are recommended before returning to Ardiente.

A short distance west of Beatty is Rhyolite, an abandoned early 1900s mining town. A short stop at this “ghost town” is a great opportunity to imagine how the people lived there. Another suggestion is to visit Scotty’s Castle, built by Albert and Bessie Johnson, but named after their friend Scotty who entertained visitors with stories about his castle and the “gold mine” below the castle. Tours through the castle or its underground facilities led by park rangers can be purchased ahead of time at 1-877-444-6777 or at www.recreation.gov. The tours are great, only last about an hour each, and are well worth the time spent. While at the northern part of the park, we took a park ranger led hike to Scotty’s actual home at Lower Vine Ranch (2 miles and about 2 ½ hours roundtrip). Nearby is 600-foot deep Ubehebe Crater which was formed by a massive volcanic explosion.

Any trip to Death Valley during the late February to April time period can reveal wildflowers growing in the valley before the heat of the summer dry them up. However, the extent of the wildflowers depends on just how much it rains and when it rains in the late fall and winter. This year conditions were not favorable and wildflowers are few in number.

Leaving the park to return to Ardiente, we recommend taking the route to Pahrump-and visiting the two wineries in Pahrump. The Pahrump Valley Winery at 3810 E Winery Road and Sanders Family Winery at 3780 E Kellogg Road offer wine tasting and reasonable prices for their great tasting wines.
