ARDENSINGERS GILD Summer is a quieter time for the Ardensingers, but we still have things going on and, of course, we'll be preparing for our 2019 - 2020 season of shows. If you'd like to find out more, or to express interest in taking part in any of the activities described below, E-mail us at [email protected] or call John Trexler at (484) 319-2350. There's lots of information about our upcoming shows at our website, www.ardensingers.org. At the present time we're welcoming new singers and actors to join our chorus: chorus auditions are informal, and if you have prior choir or musical theater experience, you should do fine. We'd also welcome help on our production and business committees. Costume Work-day: We'll be organizing and tagging costumes one evening in mid- to late-July, and would be happy to have additional help. Singing the National Anthem at a Wilmington Blue Rocks game: A July or August date is planned. Arden Fair Beer and Wine Booth, Sat. Aug. 31st, 10am - 6pm: Revenue from the Arden Fair helps keep the lights on in the Gild Hall, and the Beer and Wine Booth, typically manned by the Ardensingers, is the biggest Arden Fair money-maker. Come out and join us in this worthy, and fun, activity. Sign up for one or more two- hour shifts during the day, or for set-up at 8:30am. In the busy mid-afternoon hours, we can use 12 or more helpers. Christmas at the Tower There's still time to join the chorus for our Fall show. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings, starting in mid-September. Lead roles were filled at auditions in late June, but there will be opportunities for solos, ensemble singing, and bits of dialog for our chorus members. Young actors are also welcome – informal group auditions, involving readings from the folk plays, are planned for September. It's 16th Century London, and the town is in a festive mood! Join us for the celebrations, with traditional songs and dance, processions, folk plays, mischief, an unexpected wedding, and general merry-making, all intended to chase the dark winter away! In our mummers play, St. George will, once again, be protecting England from fearsome beasts and foreign foes, with Father Christmas, the learned doctor, the fool, and many others in attendance. (I'm told that tales of Robin Hood, a puppet show, and a children's game are also possibilities.) Updated information concerning the show contents, including a plot-line summary, character descriptions, and links to scripts, music recordings, and videos are available on the website. Current Ardensingers chorus members are not required to audition, but are asked to contact us to confirm their intent to participate in the show. Gilbert & Sullivan's: Princess Ida Auditions: Late August or early September Shows: April 24 - May 2, 2020 Princess Ida tells the hilarious tale of a princess and prince whose marriage was arranged when they were infants. Prince Hilarion has been waiting 20 years to meet his bride, but learns instead that Princess Ida will not honor the commitment, and has gone off to start a womens college. In an attempt to woo her, Hilarion and two companions dress up as maidens and sneak into the school. Violence between the two families looks certain, but true love prevails! CONCERT GILD

Kat Edmonson

On Sale Now! Saturday, October 19, 2019 - 8 PM | $30 General | $25 Members Tickets by email via [email protected] for members Edmonson is already well established as an old soul; she'd have that reputation even without her recent contribution to Café Society, the Woody Allen rom-com set in 1930s Hollywood. Her previous three albums all exude a twinkly throwback charm, whether in jazz-cabaret or folksy indie-pop mode. She was, briefly and incongruously, a contestant on the second season of American Idol, where her vintage, soft-spoken style caused befuddlement among the judges.

LIBRARY GILD The library will be open Sunday afternoons (2:30 – 4), Wednesday evenings (7:30 – 9) and Thursday afternoons (3 – 4:30). The Saturday evening hours will resume with the new Dinner Gild season in October.

Booklist (September 1, 2007 (Vol. 104, No. 1)) “Tallamy takes an obvious observation—wildlife is threatened when suburban development encroaches on once wild lands—and weds it to a novel one: that beneficial insects are being deprived of essential food resources when suburban gardeners exclusively utilize nonnative plant material. Such an imbalance, Tallamy declares, can lead to a weakened food chain that will no longer be able to support birds and other animal life. Once embraced only by members of the counterculture, the idea of gardening with native plants has been landscape design’s poor stepchild, thought to involve weeds and other plants too unattractive for pristine suburban enclaves. Not so, says Tallamy, who presents compelling arguments for aesthetically pleasing, ecologically healthy gardening. With nothing less than the future of North American biodiversity at stake, Tallamy imparts an encouraging message: it’s not too late to save the ecosystem-sustaining matrix of insects and animals, and the solution is as easy as replacing alien plants with natives.”

Come to the library… As a follow-up to Doug Tallamy’s recent super lecture check out his book and these others that will help you make decisions about how to fairly easily improve your section of the local biome. We also have information on what else you may find when you do.

Trade your lawn for a lively prairie or replace it with a runoff-reducing rain garden. Swap it for an interactive adventure garden or convert it to a low-maintenance living carpet.

A guide to natural landscaping that explores the interrelationships of plants, animals, climate, and soil.

Climate change is one of the greatest threats that humankind faces in the 21st century. But while government and industry fail to act, this book argues, we could all work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60%.

And even more:

• Wildflowers, by William Cullina

• How to Use Wildflowers and Wild Shrubs and Trees in Your Garden, by Hal Bruce (a great friend of Ardenites, Hal was on the horticultural staff at Winterthur)

• Animal Tracks, by Olaus Murie and Mark Elbrod

• Birds of Eastern and Central North America, by Roger Tory Peterson

• Field Guide to Moths of Northeastern North America, by David Beadle and Seabrook Leckie

Want even more? Ask the librarian to show you the plant and animal section.

We do have a new service we hope those of you who need it you will take advantage of, “Book Pals” will deliver the book or books of your choice if you can’t get to the library on your own. Call Elizabeth (475-1098) for more information.

BRIDGE GILD

July to August 2019 Folk Gild takes a break for Summer Fun! Join us for the ARDEN FAIR Saturday August 31st to say Adieu to Summer.

For more information, call 302-478-7257 or 610-277-0844. Find us on Facebook: Arden Folk Dance, or on our website: www.Ardenclub.org.

We play in the Bratten Room of the Lower Gild Hall the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Bridge Gild meeting dates for July are the 4th and 18th. Our August dates are the 1st and 15th. The cost is $1 for members and $2 for non-members. SEE YOU THERE!

Our Gardeners Gild meetings are usually held on the third Monday of every month in the Lower Gild Hall, at 7:30PM. We offer meaningful, interesting, and educational programs for our Ardens gardeners, residents, and all Arden Club members, every month; and we aim to become an active, contributing resource in our community. We won’t be holding meetings in July or August, although we will have our annual Plant Sale at the Arden Fair, where you should be able to find all kinds of wonderful new plants and a few great gardening ideas for your gardens! After a super presentation by Ken Darsney of the Nemours Gardens, in May, we made a visit there on June 25th. Ken has done amazing conservation work in very different ways: regulating and reducing water for many of their gardens, swapping more ecologically friendly plants into many of the gardens as well, and several others, all quite inspiring. For more information, please contact [email protected].

WRITERS’ GILD

The Scholars Gild is on summer break for July and August. Please join us September 17, at 7:30 PM, for the start of the Scholars season. Look for an update on the programs of the upcoming season later this summer on Facebook, “Arden Scholars’ Gild”, through email, and in the September issues of the Club Calendar and the Arden Page. Join us each third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM during the academic season. If you would like to receive email updates directly from Scholars Gild, email [email protected]. See you in the fall!

The Arden Writers' Gild, in conjunction with The Arden Club, gathers on the second Tuesday of every month at 7P.M. for a two hour mini-retreat. We meet in The Arden Gild Hall Library. Our casual and inclusive family is open to anyone looking to be inspired by the power of words. Our small group format encourages dialogue and sharing without criticism. We do not critique work; instead, we use our stories and poems (or stories and poems by authors we love) to launch discussions about life and our common humanity. You don't have to be a writer to join our family, just be willing to listen respectfully and to respond in positive and affirming ways to those who choose to share. Hope to see you soon! Warm cookies are provided as an added incentive.

DINNER GILD We have completed this year’s weekly Saturday evening dinner program, and we have already begun planning next year’s calendar, to begin in October. This past year we enjoyed many great culinary productions, and believe most everyone was happy to partake! We’re looking forward to every meal to come. If you and your family and/or small group of 5-10 people can offer to make a meal for your friends and neighbors, please contact Laura Wallace at [email protected] or Claire Ennis at [email protected]. The only big change we expect next year is our new pricing schedule: Dinners will join everything else in the world that costs a little bit more: $12.00 for up-to-date Arden Club members, and $7.00 for children, with non-Arden Club members paying $15.00. Leftovers in your containers will go for $7.00. We haven’t raised prices in many years, and we trust everyone will understand. And be sure to check your date for Arden Club renewal!

We welcome new members to the Dinner Gild. The duties aren’t heavy and the meetings are held once a month on the first Monday evening at 7:30PM in the Lower Gild Hall. It can be a great way
