CONCERT GILD Saturday October 19, 2019 - 8 PM KAT EDMONSON $25 Members $30 Guests

Edmonson is already well established as an old soul; she'd have that reputation even without her recent contribution to Café Society, the Woody Allen rom-com set in 1930s Hollywood. Her previous three albums all exude a twinkly throwback charm, whether in jazz-cabaret or folksy indie-pop mode. She was, briefly and incongruously, a contestant on the second season of American Idol, where her vintage, soft-spoken style caused befuddlement among the judges.

WRITERS GILD

The Arden Writers Gild gathers on the second Tuesday of every month at 7PM for a two-hour mini retreat. We meet in The Arden Gild Hall Library. Our casual and inclusive family is open to anyone looking to be inspired by the power of words. You don't have to be a writer to join our family, just be willing to listen respectfully and to respond in positive and affirming ways. Warm cookies are provided as an added incentive! We hope to see you soon!

BRIDGE GILD

The Bridge Gild meets regularly in the Bratton Room (downstairs) in the Gild Hall on the first and third Thursdays of the month.

SHAKESPEARE GILD

Beginning the new year, or rather the 2019/2020 cycle, in our October meeting, we will elect a new slate of Gild officers, decide on the director for the 2020 summer show, and discuss new projects for the Gild and the Club. Details on all that, coming in the November issue of this Calendar. One of the ambitions we will be pursuing is to work more closely with our fellow and complementary Gilds, for example, we worked with the Writers’ Gild in selling water and soda at the Fair. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 in the Lower Gild Hall. We usually have refreshments.

GARDENERS GILD Gardeners Gild Plant Booth Expressions of Gratitude

In addition to our high-spirited volunteers, the Gardeners Gild sincerely thanks Barbara Conway and the many individuals and businesses whose generous donations of plants and goods made the Plant Booth at the 2019 Arden Fair such a big success! We hope you will support these generous donors who are so vital in helping to sustain our wonderful and unique villages! The business donors to the Plant Booth this year were: ACTION HARDWARE, BELAK FLOWERS, BOYD’S FLOWERS, BREAD AND BUTTERCREAM, BREGER FLOWERS, FRIENDLY GIFT SHOP, GATEWAY GARDENS, GIANT FOOD STORES, HIGHLAND ORCHARDS, JOHN PETERSHEIM PRODUCE, LOWES, MARCUS HOOK FLORIST, MARINI’S, OLD COUNTRY GARDENS, SCORE SEED AND GARDEN SUPPLY, STOLTZFUS PRODUCE AND FRESH EGGS In October, our Gardeners Gild will again welcome Tom Borkowski who will assist us with potting bulbs at 7PM, and then at 7:30, we’re thrilled to present A brief overview of floral design by Betty O’Regan, including: • Betty’s philosophy about foraging, buying and using local vs. hothouse flowers • Design basics (color, focal point, balance, variety, unity) • Proper preparation and care of flowers for longer life • Containers and tricks to hold flowers in place • And a make-your-own flower arrangement workshop! For that, please bring a medium sized container of any kind.

Some flowers will be supplied but please contribute something that you have found in your garden, a friend’s yard (with permission, of course), or on the roadside to share with the group. Think: dried grasses, twigs or branches, pods, and greenery. Lots of one specimen or a variety that you find interesting. Everything works!

SCHOLARS GILD

What is the relationship between democracy and the press? How should we, as Americans, understand the current media environment? MacArthur Fellow and renowned 60 Minutes producer, Charles Lewis, will discuss investigative journalism and public accountability for this exciting Scholars evening. Charles Lewis is a tenured professor of journalism and the founding executive editor of the Investigative Reporting Workshop at the American University School of Communication in Washington, D.C. A former ABC News and CBS News 60 Minutes producer, Lewis founded two Pulitzer Prize-winning news organizations -- the Center for Public Integrity which published roughly 300 investigative reports, including 14 books, from 1989 through 2004, winning more than 30 national journalism awards and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, the first global network

Christmas at the Tower, with St. George & the Dragon, a mummers play

Shows: Dec. 6 - 14, 2019 at the Arden Gild Hall Rehearsals are under way for our December show, "Christmas at the Tower". It’s 16th Century London, and the town is in a festive mood, with traditional songs and dance, processions, folk plays, mischief, and general merry-making, all intended to chase the dark winter away! A highlight of the show will be presentation of a mummers play, St. George and the Dragon, by our young actors, many of whom have also been participants in the Arden Shakespeare Gild's …

Gilbert & Sullivan's "Princess Ida"

Shows: April 24 - May 2, 2020 at the Gild Hall

May 16, 2020 at the Smyrna Opera House

Princess Ida tells the hilarious tale of a princess and prince whose marriage was arranged when they were infants. Prince Hilarion has been waiting 20 years to meet his bride, but learns instead that Princess Ida will not honor the commitment, and has gone off to start a women’s college. In an attempt to woo her, Hilarion and two companions dress up as maidens and sneak into the school. Violence between the two families looks certain, but true love prevails!

Lead roles were cast at auditions in late August, but we'd still welcome additional singers and actors for the chorus. Contact us at [email protected] for more information, or to express interest in joining us. The cast list, and additional information about the show, is available from our website, www.ardensingers.org.
