Overview “Spontaneousmemorials”(alsotermed“spontaneousshrines”,“temporarymemorials”,“grassrootsmemorials”,or“makeshiftmemorials”)are,Santinonotes,“silentwitnesses[….]aprimarywaytomountthosewhodiedasuddenorshockingdeath,andtoacknowledgethecircumstancesofthedeaths”(Santino2006,5,12).Suchmemorialshavebeenthecontextorobjectofdifferentdisciplinaryandinterdisciplinaryinvestigations,suchas:spontaneousmemorialsasspacesofculturalnegotiationofpublicgrief(Doss2008;Eyre2006;Senie2006);theircommemorativeandperformativeroles(Santino2016);ritualsofgift-givingandthematerialcultureofmourning(HallamandHockey,2001);spacesofsocialaction(MargryandSanchez-Carretero2011),orpoliticalprotestanddeathrituals(Marchi2006);examplesofmassmediationofdisasterandtragicdeath(DayanandKatz1994);andinthecontextofasociologyofterroristattacks(Truc2018).However,spontaneousmemorialsraisealsoquestionsabouttheculturalprofessionalpractices,agents,outputsandimpactofcreating,documenting,managingandusingtheirarchives(seee.g.Maynor2015;Milošević2018;Morin2015;Purcell2012;Rivard2012;Schwartz2012;Whitton2016).Anexaminationoftheimpactthatspontaneousmemorialshaveonlocalmuseums,libraries,archivesorrelatedculturalorganisationstaskedwiththeirdocumentation,archivingandlong-termuseissignificantbecauseofthevalueandrolesthatthesememorials(andtheirarchive)haveinconstructingpersonalandcollectivememoriesoftragiceventsandtheimpacttheyhaveinchallengingestablishedarchivingandmuseologicalmethodsandtimeframes.Inthecaseofspontaneousmemorials,culturalorganisationsarefacedwithchallengessuchasrapiddocumentationandcontemporarycollecting,whichmostoftenfalloutsidetheirusualacquisition,collectingandmanagementframeworks.Inthiscontext,whatiscollected,documentedandarchived(ornot),whenandhowoften,bywhomandwhat/whofor,arequestionsthatneedtobeaddressed,inordertorevealtheagency,pre-conceptionsandcomprehensivenessintheformationanduseofaspontaneousmemorial’sarchive.Also,thefrequencyofspontaneousmemorialsoverrecentyearsmakessuchanexaminationallthemoreimportantandtimely.Accordingly,this2-dayinternationalworkshop,whichisfundedbytheBritishAcademy,willbringtogetherpractitioners,researchersandorganisationsinvolvedinarchivingandstudyingrecentandpastspontaneousmemorials.Itwillbeanopportunitytoshareexperiencesanddiscussconceptual,practicalandethicalchallengesinarchivingspontaneousmemorials,including:thepreparednessofcityandculturalauthoritiestorespondtothespeed,timeframeandpublicexpectationsofthesememorials;issuesofpublicparticipationandco-production;theexpansionofthespontaneousmemorialisationondigitalandsocialmedia;howarchivingdecisionsaffecttheconstructionandevolutionofthememoryoftherelevantevents;andtheuseoftheresultedarchiveinthecontextofhealthandwellbeingofpeopleaffectedpsychologicallyand/orphysicallybytheevents.Workshopparticipantswillalsoidentifypracticalandmethodologicalchallenges,planforalong-termprogrammeofactivityanddiscusspossiblefundingroutestosupportthiswork.Theintendedoutcomeistheformationofacommunityofpracticeandinternationalnetworkoncreating,documentingandusingarchivesofspontaneousmemorials.

disseminatethemthroughexhibitions,digitalmedia,publicationsandpublicwork.Thecollectioncontains,amongmanyotherthings,approximately4millionphotos.Öjmyrhasformerlybeenmanagerofexhibitionsandpublicworkinthemuseum.Barcelona Abstract TheBarcelonaHistoryMuseum(MUHBA)hasbeentheinstitutionthatdocumentedand,alongwiththeCityContemporaryArchive,collectedandkeepthespontaneousmemorialsarisenafterthe2017,August17attacksinLaRambla. ThesememorialsspreadallovertheLaRamblaStreet,in150differentspotsthatincludeddocuments,graffitiandawidevarietyofobjects.Thecollectionofthesememorialshasgeneratedanarchiveofmorethan7,800objectsthathavebeencataloguedinaprocessthatlasted6months.Thisarchive,alongwiththedocumentscollectedbytheArchive,hasbeenthebasetoapubliconlinedatabase,publishedbythecommemorationoftheyearaftertheattack. Inourpresentationwewillexplainthedecision-makingprocessaroundthememorials,allthepracticalandlogisticalchallengesgeneratedbythisprocessandthesolutionsweadopted.Also,weexposethemethodologicalandconceptualquestionsthatsurfacedandinwhichwearestillworking.Finally,wewilltalkabouttherepercussionofthecreationofthearchiveinthecitizenshipandthemedia,andtheiruseofthearchiveandaccessibilitytothecitizenship. recordsmanagerattheEssexRecordOffice,1978-1992,andtheEastSussexRecordOffice,1993-2013.From2006-2013shewastheProgrammeManagerforTheKeepleadingmultidisciplinaryteamstodeliveranewhistoricalresourcecentreforEastSussexCountyCouncil,BrightonandHoveCityCouncilandtheUniversityofSussex,whichwasopenedbyHRHQueenElizabethIIin2013.HerworkonTheKeepenabledhertodevelopadetailedunderstandingofarchivebuildingsandservicesandhowpartnershipsandcommunityengagementcanbringpeopletogethertoexploreandrecordtheirheritageininnovativeandinclusiveways.SheiscurrentlyworkingonoptionsforthedevelopmentofaWestSussexHistoryandHeritageCentre.WendyisamemberoftheWestSussexCivilianandMilitaryPartnershipBoard,ChairoftheSussexRecordSocietyandhasrecentlyledworktoachieveArchiveAccreditationfortheRecordOffice.Manchester Abstract DrawingonthecaseofthespontaneousmemorialsthatappearedinManchesteraftertheManchesterArenabombing(22ndMay2017),thispresentationwillreflectonconceptual,practicalandethicalchallengesofmanaging,documentingandarchivingmorethan10,000itemsrecoveredfromthememorials(includingwrittenmessages,photographs,posters,t-shirts,softtoys,candlesetc).Itwillalsodiscusshowpeoplehavereactedtoandparticipatedintheformationofthe"ManchesterTogetherArchive"andreflectoninitialpolicyandpracticelessonsrelatedtorapid-responsedocumentationandlong-termarchivinganduseofspontaneousmemorials.Biographies KostasArvanitisisaSeniorLecturerinMuseologyattheUniversityofManchester.Hisresearchinterestsandpublicationscrossthefieldsofmuseology,archaeology,culturalheritage,anddigitalmedia.Hisrecentworkhasfocusedontheemergenceofa“dataculture”inculturalorganisations.Kostasisalsointerestedinnotionsandpracticesofheritageactivism:drawingonthecaseoftheAmphipolistomb,he’sbeenresearchingtheroleandimpactofsocialmediaontheco-productionandcrowd-sourcingofinterpretationsofthepastandhowtheseinteractwithnotionsofauthorityinculturalprofessionalism.KostasiscurrentlyworkingwiththeManchesterArtGalleryandArchives+inarchivingandresearchingthematerialrecoveredfromthespontaneousmemorialsaftertheManchesterArenabombingon22ndMay2017.Thisworkexploresexploreconceptual,practicalandethicalchallengesinarchivingspontaneousmemorials,includingthepreparednessofculturalauthoritiestorespondtothetimeframeandpublicexpectationsofthesememorials;issuesofpublicparticipation;andtheexpansionofthespontaneousmemorialisationondigitalandsocialmedia.KostasisaManagingEditoroftheMuseumandSocietyjournal.

LarysaBoltonistheHeritageCollectionsManageratArchives+,ManchesterCentralLibrary.IpreviouslymanagedTamesideMBC’sarchiveservice,andhaveworkedwithallsortsofcollectionsrightacrossthearchivessector,includingBarclaysArchives,CheshireRecordOffice,theUniversityofLiverpoolandBoltonMBC.Ispendalargeproportionofmytimeworkinginpartnershiptomakesureweprovideexcellentandrelevantarchiveservicestoasmanypeopleaspossible.ThisincludesourArchives+partnersbasedatManchesterCentralLibrary–NorthWestFilmArchive,AhmedIqbalUllahRaceRelationsResourceCentreandManchesterandLancashireFamilyHistorySociety.IalsoworkacrossGreaterManchesteraspartoftheGreaterManchesterArchivesandLocalStudiesPartnership,whichisaformalcollaborationofthetenlocalauthoritydistrictarchiveservices.I’mparticularlyinterestedincommunityarchivesandtheirimpactonidentityandsocietyandasaproudManc,I’mabsolutelycommittedtomakingsureourcollectionsreachandreflectaswideanaudienceaspossibleandtelleveryone’sstory–Manchesterisbettertogether.AmandaWallaceistheDeputyDirectorofManchesterArtGallery,andprojectleadfortheManchesterTogetherArchive-thepublicmessages,memorabiliaandtributestothe22MayterroristattackofManchesterArena.Sheoriginallytrainedasanarchaeologist(UniversityofManchester1989)andhasanMAinMuseumStudies(Leicester1991)andisaqualifiedobjectsconservator(MADurham1993).SheworkedatanumberofUKmuseums,includingThePittRiversMuseuminOxford,BristolMuseumsandNottinghamMuseums,beforejoiningManchesterArtGallery(MAG)in2002asHeadofConservation.AtMAGhasbeenHeadofAssetManagementandDevelopment(responsibleforcollectioncare,collectionmanagementandoperationalservices),HeadofCollectionsandAccess(withadditionalresponsibilityforthecuratorialteam),and–since2016–DeputyDirector.
