PROJECT: INTERNAL REVEAL SERVES AS A PSYCHOLOGY MUSEUM AND THERAPY CENTER WHERE USERS CAN EXPERIENCE DELIBERATE CONFUSION AND REFLECT ON THEIR EXPERIENCE. THROUGH THE USE OF SUB-FRACTAL GEOMETRY AND LINES FROM EXISTING HARDSCAPE, PATRONS WILL BE ABLE TO LEARN ABOUT THEMSELVES AND THEIR CORE BELIEFS. BY PROVIDING THIS CENTER, PSYCHOLOGIST WILL BE ABLE TO FURTHER UNDERSTAND THE REASONS BEHIND CONFUSION AND ITS CORRELATION TO CONTEMPLATION, MEDITATION AND SELF-DISCOVERY.

THE PROJECT DELIVERABLES INCLUDED SITE EVALUATION, UNDERSTANDING PROJECT USERS, SCHEMATIC DESIGN, STRUCTURE, CORE DESIGN AND PROGRAMMATIC CIRCULATION. THESE ELEMENTS ARE USED TO STRATEGICALLY DESIGN THE MUSEUM AND PROVIDE A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE FOR THE CLIENT.

33RDRD FLOORFLOOR SERVES AS AN INTERMEDIARYINTERMEDIARY LEVELLEVEL WHICH IS THE ONLY WAY TO ACCESS THE 4TH & 5TH FLOOR.

UPPER ATRIUM CIRCULATION

5TH FLOOR IS PRIMARILY USED AS PRIVATE REFLECTION SPACE AS IT IS THE MOST SECLUDED.

LOWER ATRIUM CIRCULATION

THE TWO RAMPS THAT LEAD BENEATH THE BUILDING SERVE AS THE PRIMARY ENTRANCE FOR PATRONS.

THE DOMINANT RAMP, THAT RISES FROM THE PROMENADE TO THE 2ND FLOOR, SERVES AS A SECONDARY ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING. THE BALCONY WHICH CREATES THE ILLUSION OF MAINTAINED CONTINUITY TERMINATES ON THE 3RD FLOOR.

SITE PLANTHE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN LONDON, ENGLAND ON THE SOUTH BANK OF THE THAMES RIVER; LOCATION OF THE CURRENT TATE MODERN. THERE ARE LOTS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPPORTUNITIES WITH 1/2 MILE INCLUDING LONDON RIVER SERVICES, LONDON BUS, LONDON UNDERGROUND, NATIONAL RAIL, BARCLAY BICYCLE HIRE, TAXI SERVICES AND COACH PICK-UP/DROP-OFF. EXISTING VEGETATION IS MAINTAINED, WHILE ADDITIONAL VEGETATION WAS ADDED TO PROVIDE GATHERING AREAS.

BUILDING LEVELS

BUILDING SECTIONTHE ‘MAINTAINED CONTINUITY’ OF THE DOMINANT RAMP IS INFLUENCED BY THE DELIBERATE CONFUSION HELD WITHIN THE PROJECT. ALSO, BY ELIMINATING THE ‘GROUND FLOOR’, PATRONS PROCEED FROM GRADE TO EITHER BASEMENT OR 2ND LEVEL BEFORE ENTERING.

THE COLLEGE OF TROPICAL AGRICULTURE AND HUMAN RESOURCES AT UH MANOA HAS ACQUIRED HUNDREDS OF ACRES IN WAIMANALO WHERE THEY ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIMENTING AND CROP TESTING. A MASTER PLAN HAS ALREADY BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE FUTURE OF THE COLLEGE IN WAIMANALO, BUT THEY ALSO WANTED TO CREATE A COMMUNITY OUTREACH CENTER WHERE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY CAN PARTICIPATE IN EVENTS AND FEEL INCORPORATED.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS CENTER WILL EMBODY THE CONCEPT OF CONSERVING NATURAL RESOURCES AND PROVIDING A HEALTHY LIVING ENVIRONMENT AND SHOULD INCORPORATE EXHIBIT SPACES, CLASSROOMS, TEACHING KITCHENS, AN AUDITORIUM, OFFICES, LIBRARIES AND MANY OTHER SPACES FOR RESEARCH. THE PROJECT ALSO PLANS TO INVESTIGATE TECTONICS AND TECHNOLOGY AS HUMANIST DEVICES IN ADDITION TO THE ARCHITECTURE AS A CONTRIBUTION TO CULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTRIBUTION.

INITIALLY, A MASTER PLAN WAS PROVIDED TO US BY THE MEMBERS OF THE CTAHR PLANNING COUNCIL AND WE WERE ALLOWED TO WORK WITH OR ALTER THE PLAN ACCORDING TO OUR DESIGN AND RECOMMENDATION.

FOR THE PROJECTS PROPOSED DESIGN, THE PROGRAMMING DEDICATED WITHIN THE INITIAL MASTER PLAN WAS MAINTAINED AND A STRATEGICALLY PLANNED PROCESSION THEN TOOK PLACE. THE PATH INITIALIZES AT A PLANNED INFORMATIONAL SITE WHERE ALL STAFF AND VISITORS ENTER THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND PARK IN A NEWLY CONSTRUCTED PARKING STRUCTURE, CHECK-IN, THEN PROCEED TO A SHUTTLE THAT TAKES GUEST/ STAFF THROUGH ALL THE DIFFERENT SECTORS OF RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION. THIS PATH MEANDERS THROUGH THE SITE AND PROVIDES SLIGHT GLIMPSES OF THE OUTREACH CENTER IN BRIEF PERIODS UNTIL THEY FINALLY ARRIVE IN AWE; BUILDING SUSPENSE AND ANTICIPATION. UPON ARRIVAL, SHUTTLES GO AROUND A DROP-OFF AREA WHERE THEY WAIT FOR THE RETURN TRIP BACK.

OPEN-AIR SPACE

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONBY PLACING SOLID MASSES PERPENDICULAR TO THE DIRECTIONAL TRADEWINDS, AIR CAN FREELY FLOW THROUGH THE OCCUPIABLE PUBLIC SPACE. THE DESIGN INTENDS THAT MOST PROGRAMMATIC SPACES BE PASSIVELY COOLED USING PREVAILING TRADEWINDS WITH AUXILIARY SPACES BEING MECHANICALLY CONDITIONED.

CIRCULAR DESIGN & SPACE PLANNINGTHE CIRCULAR GEOMETRIC DESIGN IS USED BECAUSE OF ITS IMPROVED INTERNAL CIRCULATION, INCREASED SECURITY, THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN VIEWS IN ALL DIREC-TIONS AND IT IS MOST EFFECTIVE FOR COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION.

BY INCORPORATING A GREEN ROOF, PRIVATE DORM ROOMS AND OFFICES ON THE UPPER FLOOR, EXTRA SECURITY IS PROVIDED. ALSO, BY RAISING ONE SIDE OF THE STRUCTURE, TRADEWINDS ARE ABLE TO PASS UNDER; ALLOWING OPEN SPACES ON BOTH SIDES TO BE PROPERLY VENTILATED.

BY INCORPORATING GARDEN SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY HELPS PROMOTE CTAHR’S NEW FACILITY, WHILE GIVING ACCESS TO LOCALS. LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTION AND DIETS WILL IMPROVE, WHILE EXERCISING THE NEED FOR MAINTENANCE; ADDING A SENSE OF INTERACTIVENESS TO THE COMMUNITY.

RESEARCH AND EXPERIMENTATION HAPPENS QUITE FREQUENTLY AND BY PROVIDING A SECURE SPACE ATOP THE FACILITY WILL ALLOW FOR MORE ACCURATE DATA. IN ADDITION, THIS RESEARCH IS DISPLAYED TO THE COMMUNITY TO SEE WHAT TYPES OF RESEARCH IS BEING CONDUCTED BY CTAHR.

THIS POSITION ENABLES INVITING VIEWS, PASSIVE VENTILATION AND SUNLIGHT THROUGH THE POROUS FACADE. THE VERTICALITY OF THESE FINS BLEND WELL INTO THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE, BUT ALSO PROVIDE A SENSE OF ‘TRANSPARENCY’ TO THE VIEWERS BOTH INSIDE AND OUT.

INTERMEDIATE POSITION

THROUGH PARTICIPATORY ACTIONS, THE FINS CAN BE PARTIALLY CLOSED TO BLOCK DIRECT SUNLIGHT IN MORNINGS AND AFTERNOONS, WHILE STILL EFFECTIVELY CATCHING/DIRECTING VENTILATION. THE WOOD PANELS HELP DAMPEN ACOUSTICS, BUT THE REFLECTIVE SIDE CREATE INTERESTING REFLECTIONS AND PATTERNS.

CLOSED POSITION

WHEN GUSTS ARE HIGH OR RAIN FALLS, THE FINS MAY BE CLOSED TO PREVENT THE ELEMENTS FROM ENTERING. HOWEVER, THIS BLOCKS THE VENTILATION AND AMBIENT LIGHT FROM ENTERING AS WELL. DUE TO THE NUMBER OF FINS AVAILABLE, SOME MAY BE CLOSED TO CREATE A MARKER SURFACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN WRITE MESSAGES.FIN POSITION CONDITIONS

3 THINGS I LEARNED:-COLLABORATIVE DESIGN PROCESS-ORAL, WRITTEN & GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION-CONSTRUCTION DETAILING SOLUTIONS

WITH THE ABILITY TO RESEARCH AND CONDUCT A SITE ANALYSIS, WE WERE ABLE TO LOCATE AVAILABLE BUILDING MATERIALS AND ANALYZE AN IMPLEMENTED OFF-GRID, PASSIVE SUSTAINABLE BUILDING SYSTEM. AN IMPERATIVE SKILL WE ACQUIRED WAS AN UNDERSTANDING HOW TO MAKE IMPROMPTU DESIGN AND DETAILING DECISIONS IN THE FIELD.

PHOTOGRAPHY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVORITE HOBBY AND PASS-TIME FOR ME. I ENJOY PHOTOGRAPHING A VARIETY OF GENRES SUCH AS LANDSCAPES, ARCHITECTURE, CARS, PORTRAITS, LOW-KEY AND PANORAMAS AND HAVE PUT COUNTLESS HOURS OF PRACTICE AND DEDICATION TO FINALLY SEE PLEASING RESULTS. SIMILAR TO ARCHITECTURE, THERE ARE COUNTLESS ASPECTS THAT’S TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION, SUCH AS COMPOSITION, LIGHTING, EXPOSURE, APERTURE, AND OPTICS. I TAKE MY CAMERA EVERYWHERE BECAUSE IT ALLOWS ME TO VIEW THE WORLD FROM A TOTALLY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. I REALLY BELIEVE THAT A PICTURE IS WORTH 1000 WORDS AND PHOTOS CAN DESCRIBE SCENES OR FEELINGS WHICH CAN’T BE TRANSCRIBED INTO WORDS.
