This studio focused on principles in design that can inform light weight, long span structures; with special emphasis on surface geometry and form finding ex-periments. The end goal of the project was to design a velodrome track.
The site is located on the edge of the Fifth City neigh-borhood, which is occupying a location on the far west side of Chicago.

This roof structure utilizes a braided cable diagrid, which spans nearly 470 feet. Fastened to the cable sys-tem is a translucent polymer capable of standing up to
a windy Chicago environment, as well as long wet win-ters. The translucency of the polymer provides ample diffused day lighting for common sporting activities.

In spring 2013 my studio was given the opportunity to design a bath house. The restrictions were very minimal; one such constraint being that it must be located on or near a natural hot spring. The last constraint was that it must be located in the United States.
My design was settled on a small lake in very rural Alaska in which an active volcano is the Geo-thermal heating element for the site. With a constant temperature between 67-75 degrees fahrenheit all year round this seemed like a very advantageous arrangement. Seclusion equals Relaxation.

The goal in this studio was to design a residential building which would be coupled with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Columbus Building. The new building will function as living space for incoming lecturers and visiting artists.
My design was to make bold separation between the Art Institutes’s Columbus building and the residence, although the residence is connected to the existing building. There must be harsh thresholds to distinguish between work and home.

The studio’s main objective was to design a bath house, or in less subjective terms a location for the action of bathing. Restrictions for the project were minimal and open-ended. The location had to be in the United States, and it must be sited near or on a natural hot spring.
My design was settled on a petite hill overlooking a small lake sized thermal spring, known as Surprise lake in Alaska. The lake itself is very secluded, located in the caldera of Mount Aniakcha, it is only accessible by float plane or helicopter. Seclusion equals Silence equals Relaxation.

Mapping of stars above the site on the Win-ter Solstice.
Using an evolutionary solver I distilled the paths of most fitness.
Taking the paths of most fitness and off-setting them to create the circulation and several large pools for the project.
A projection is then mapped on the surface and vertically manipulated until the geom-etry can be both shallow and deep in the landscape. Shallow where it touches water and deep as the grade of the hill increases as the depth of location increases.

This studio was solely dedicated to the production of a black box theater. The new building would also house a programmatic environment for underprivileged high school students to get assistance and guidance school work and college applications. The site is located in the Ravenswood Area on the northern side of Chicago, in a park know as Ronan Park. The east side of the park is home to the north branch of the Chicago river. The building pokes at the idea of “proscenium” the programatic areas are all faced with a large glass facade, in this way each room becomes it own prosce-nium. The objective is to promote that even mundane tasks can be a show.

In the summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to partici-pate in a very unique class, a collaborative between the School of the Art Institute and Northwestern Univer-sity.
My group’s project entailed collecting eye tracking data in real-time by constructing a booth where the observer would pose for a photograph of themselves. An eye-tracking device comunicates information into a custom Processing sketch and overlays the viewers eye movements over their “Selfie” (Photograph), which is automatically uploaded to twitter for all to see. {https://twitter.com/MeMyselfieEye} My role specifically was to design and build the booth for tracking as well as design the exhibition space in the School of the Art Institute’s gallery.

This course was particularly focused on the building as being “intelligent”, it allowed for the opportunity to work with Arduino and sensors to create dynamic envi-ronments. The following pages are an attempt to create an environment where the occupant would be trans-posed into a snap shot of birds flocking. The LED’s are triggered by CO2 sensors, as the occupant enters it is pitch black, as they wait the amount of ambiant CO2 increase and the lights slowly dim on. The image on the right is an image of the model with the fiberoptic strands illuminated at hald CO2 register.

This ceramics studio went indepth on the processes of mold making for both fine art and mass production. The project shown in the coming pages is an instalation piece. The installation challenges our pre-occupation of spacial openings and entrances which are inherently derived from building conventions.
