ARCHBISHOP QUINN TO SPEAK AT "RERUM NOVARUM" CENTENNIAL
Archbishop John Quinn of San Francisco will be the keynote
speaker at the University of San Diego's February 19 celebration
of the centennial of "Rerum Novarum (The Condition of Labor),"
the first Catholic encyclical focusing on a social issue.
Archbishop Quinn will discuss the century-long impact of
Pope Leo XIII's landmark 1891 encyclical at a free lecture at 8
p.m. in Camino Theater at Alcala Park, the USD campus.
The Rerum Novarum, the first of a collection of modern
Catholic social teachings, examined the subject of economic
justice and the rights of workers. Catholic institutions around
the world are observing its centennial with activities that
reflect on the Church's social mission.
"The centennial anniversary of the Rerum Novarum is an
important event, not only for Catholics, but for industrial
society as a whole," said Dr. G.L. Oddo, chairman of the USD
celebration.
"One hundred years ago, the conflict between capitalism and
socialism had created strife all over Europe and the United
States. Pope Leo's great encyclical condemned capitalism for
exploiting workers and for its ethic of materialism, and the
encyclical also condemned socialism for denying the right to

private property. The Pope urged a 'via media,' or a middle
way, stressing cooperation between workers and managers as the
road to industrial peace and societal harmony," Oddo said.
Archbishop Quinn, head of the San Francisco Archdiocese
since 1977, was the first native San Diegan to be made a bishop
and is a former trustee of the University of San Diego. He has
served as Chairman of the Committee of the Liturgy of the
National Conference of Catholic Bishops. He also has been
Chairman of the Committee on Family Life of the U.S. Catholic
Conference.
