    A. The Step Pyramid Complex of Djoser,

    Saqqara, Egypt (c. 2700 BC). B. The Step Pyramid itself has a

    rectangular base, rather than square. It represented a staircase to the northern stars. Each step itself is a mastaba.

    C. It is assumed to have functioned as a vast mortuary complex in an enormous courtyard surrounded by ceremonial structures and decoration.

    D. The entire structure is made of rough stones. These limestone columns in the image were built to look like bundles of plant stems.
