Ahlan wa sahlan!(Welcome)Thank you for your interest in this book and your interest in learning Arabic language! I was just like many of you, English is my first language. The first time I saw the Quran in Arabic, I thought, There is no way I can learn to read this! However, I can tell you that I did and YOU CAN too! By Allahs permission, I have taught Arabic language to many Englishspeakers, young and old. One thing I am sure about is that EVERYONE can learn, but not everyone can learn at the same pace. Some people can handle a fast-paced learning environment where they are immersed in the language. Other people need a slower pace in which they can ponder over each step. With my curriculum, you can create your own pace. Use my Suggested Study Schedule to move as quickly or as slowly as you choose. My workbook series and website are designed to take you from alif-baa-taa, to reading the Quran and speaking Arabic, by the permission of Allah. So get focused. Begin to envision yourself reciting the Book of Allah with ease in your most beautiful voice. Imagine yourself receiving those hasanaat on your scale, or 10 rewards for every letter. Imagine your Iman, (your faith) increasing due to your understanding of Allahs eloquence and being guided by His speech! Imagine yourself, standing in the taraweeh prayer in Ramadan and actually understanding the recitation of the Imam! Imagine tears streaming down your face because you understood the admonishment, or the reminder, or the promise from the Lord of the Worlds! If you want this more than anything, then I want to help you achieve that. Accept me as your teacher because I already claim you as my student. From the heart sisters, this book is especially for you! With love, Your Us-taa-tha (teacher) Nadiya Johnson al-Khad-raa5

May Allah taaala assist you with what you are seeking, for verily with Him is all success. And may His peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, and all of his companions.

Your dua:

Allahumma zid-nee ilmaa Oh Allah, increase me in knowledge

Allahumma aee-nee ala thik-ri-ka wa shuk-ri-ka wa hus-n iba-da-tik Oh Allah, help me in remembering you, being thankful to you, and beautifying my worship of you.

Allahumma yaa Muqalib al qu-loob, thabit qal-bee alaa deenik Oh Allah, The Turner of Hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.

Learning to Read the QuranFor this series, you will need a mus-haf, which is a copy of the complete Quran in Arabic. I suggest a large copy and not a small one. In the beginning, reading will be difficult. It may take several minutes just to struggle through a few words. Do not be discouraged, rather be determined! After difficulty comes ease. With patience and consistency, reading will become easier and easier as you accustom your eyes to the Arabic text and your mouth to the pronunciation of the letters. If you follow the Suggested Study Schedule, you will choose one surah to read on Wednesdays. You must stick with that surah until you complete this level inshaAllah. The more you read that one surah, the easier it will become. In other words, the more you read, the easier it is to read! And time spent reading the Book of Allah is never wasted.

8

Some Suggested Quran ReadingsThese are only my suggestions for your Wednesday reading. However you can choose any part of the Quran you prefer. Level 3 Introduction

In this workbook you will be learning how to talk about yourself, other people, families and possessions. This book requires you to do quite a bit of memorizing. The first thing youll be memorizing inshaAllah, singular (mufrad) and plural (jemu) of many words. In the Arabic language, a plural is made up of 3 or more things or people. Every noun (person, place, or thing), has a plural form. These plurals (jum u), for the most part must be memorized as we learn new vocabulary. So going forward, when a new word is introduced, its plural will also be introduced inshaAllah. Pronouns will also have a singular and plural form. The second thing youll be memorizing is pronoun forms like he and she or his and hers. When memorizing these word forms, it is important to be patient. Do not allow yourself to feel frustrated and do not ask too many questions. It is important to do the work of memorizing and wait and see the benefit later These plural forms are part of the beauty and eloquence of the Arabic language. When you begin to understand the Quran, then you will be happy that you took this time and effort to memorize, inshaAllah.

jemul Mutha-kkar Saalim

The Sound Masculine Plural is formed by adding waw and noon to the end of a noun. This kind of plural is formed for people and not for things. It is seen very often in the Quran.

Some example sentences:The Muslims are in the masjid.

. . .

The teachers are in the school.

.

The believers are in paradise.

The polytheists are in the fire.

*It is also formed for adjectives describing people. The teachers are hard-working.

. The believers are righteous.. 13

Write the jemu mu-thak-kar saalim(Sound Masculine Plural) by adding waw noon

Teacher

14

Engineer

Thankful one

One fasting

One sleeping

One doing an action

Believer

Patient one

One migrating

jemul Mu-a-nneth Saalim

The Sound Feminine Plural is formed by changing the taa marbootah to alif-taa at the end of the noun. This kind of plural is formed for people and many feminine things. It is also very commonly seen in the Quran.

Some example sentences:The Muslim women are in the masjid

. . .

The female teachers are in the school.

The believing women are in jenna.

The polytheists are in the fire.

.

15

Write the jemu mu-an-neth saalim(Sound Feminine Plural) By changing taa marbootah to alif-taa

16

Read these verses from the Quran.

The hypocrites, males and females are one from another. Taubah: 68

The believers, males and females are protectors/supporters of one another. Taubah: 71

(They say:) Verily we are making improvement. Baqarah: 11

17

The Broken plural or jemu aTakseer causes a word to change form by adding letters. You learn these plural by memorization only. So say them repetitively. We will memorize according to their patterns to make it easier inshaAllah, so this is your first pattern:

Aw-laa-dun

Talking about Me and Us First person

we

I

24

The first person well talk about is ourselves. The grammatical term al-muta-kellim (the speaker) is used to refer to the first person or ana. So well begin with ana:

. . . .

I (am) Nadiya. I (am) a woman. I (am) a teacher. I (am) from America. I use ana to say I am though am does not translate. I am muanneth(feminine), therefore most of the words I use end with taa marbootah. If a man speaks about himself he will use the muthakkar(masculine) and his statements might look like this:

. . . .

25

Choose words from this list to write 5-7 simple sentences about yourself. Begin each sentence with ana.Fem.

Wife

mas.

Husband

Example:

.

_________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________ _________________________________________26

Connected Pronoun

. . . . In these sentences, now I speak about possessions. This is my house. My house is beautiful. This is my car. My car is new. To talk about your possessions, you will add a yaa to the noun to say my. This connected pronoun, hooked to the end of a noun is called dha-meer mutta-sil. Use it to speak about your possessions:

Changed the dammataan to a kes-ra, then connected yaa to say my house.

Changed the dammataan to a kes-ra, then connected yaa to say my book.

27

We use dhameer muttasil to speak about relationships with people:

My mother (umm-ee)

My father (abee)

My son (ibnee)

My daughter (bintee)

The connected pronounUmm is mother, hooked to the end is the dha-meer muta-sil meaning my. We take off the dammataan and put a kes-ra, add yaa and it becomes my mother. Abu is father, the yaa hooked to the end makes it my father.

Now add yaa to personalize these people. Write the new word on the line as in the chart above.
