ForewordAuthority and reputation in the art world are determined more and more in aninternational context. It is important for the development of artists and designersfrom the Netherlands to be able to measure themselves against internationalstandards. It is also important to facilitate and encourage cooperation betweenDutch organizations and partners abroad.

In 2008, a new crop of Dutch artists and designers once again attracted inter-national attention. Art from the Netherlands was presented in a record numberof countries. The Mondriaan Foundation is pleased that there has beena consistent increase in applications from Latin America, Asia and Africa. This is partly due to the Mondriaan Foundation orientation visits to theseareas and reflects developments in visual arts across the world.

This annual report reviews the Mondriaan Foundation’s international activitiesin 2008. If we can be of service to you or if you require further information, please visit our website www.mondriaanfoundation.nl or contact us at ourAmsterdam office.

1. Mondriaan FoundationThe Mondriaan Foundation aims to encourage the appreciation of visual arts, design and cultural heritage from the Netherlands. Contemporary art anddesign from the Netherlands is exhibited by renowned institutions all over theworld. We are committed to strengthening international cooperation and exchange. We endeavour to do this by offering financial support to enable institutions, companies and authorities, both national and international, to reach theiraudience and to extend this reach.

We also believe it important that artists, professionals and the public in theNetherlands have access to the latest international developments. To this end,we support initiatives designed to bring foreign projects of topical interest, and news of them, to the Netherlands.

International projects supported by the Mondriaan Foundation include inter-national cooperation and exchange, exhibitions and publications of art anddesign from the Netherlands abroad, gallery representation at foreign art fairs, international visitors and group programmes, and participation in biennialsand triennials.

In addition to international projects, the Mondriaan Foundation supportsother activities within the Netherlands such as acquisitions for museum collections, activities in the field of cultural heritage, publications and magazines, pro-gramming for artist run spaces, art and design projects, exchange programmesand an art purchase scheme for private individuals.

The Mondriaan Foundation has an annual budget of approximately € 20 million.Every year more than a thousand applications are processed. Over one third of theprojects supported by the foundation take place abroad.

The Mondriaan Foundation operates with a board of six members, ten advisorycommittees comprising about sixty members, and a staff of twenty.

3. Exhibitions and publications

The Mondriaan Foundation supports galleries, museums and exhibition spacesthat exhibit contemporary art or design from the Netherlands. The main criteriaare an institution’s artistic standing and reputation, which are assessed onthe basis of its exhibition programme. The Mondriaan Foundation usually helpsto cover the cost of transporting works of art, plus the cost of artists’ traveland accommodation. We also co-support the cost of publications that providecontextual information about artists’ work. In 2008, we supported 241exhibitions / publications in 46 countries.

5. International network programmes

With a view to promoting art and design from the Netherlands abroad, theMondriaan Foundation organises special visitors programmes for foreign visualart and design professionals. Visitors programmes are organised for curatorsand other professionals to offer greater insight into contemporary visual artsand design from the Netherlands and to strengthen international ties and promotethe exchange of ideas. Professionals are invited to the Netherlands for uniquelytailored programmes of visits to museums, galleries, artists and designers. The aim of these visits is to encourage international exchange projects.

In addition to the individual visitors programmes, the Mondriaan Foundationorganizes orientation trips together with the Prince Claus Fund. These orientationprogrammes focus on certain regions, and aim to intensify the exchangeof knowledge, vision and perception between professionals working in these areas. The first visit to the Middle East (2004) was followed by a visit to a numberof regions in China (2005). South Africa and Senegal were visited during the thirdtrip in 2006. In 2007 a trip was organised to Guadalajara, Mexico City and Curaçao.And in 2008 to Dhaka (Bangladesh), Delhi and Mumbai (India), and Dubai andAbu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).

6. State manifestations

The Mondriaan Foundation is responsible for the Dutch entries at a numberof cultural manifestations such as the Venice Biennale. State manifestations arecommissioned by the Dutch government and are implemented by the MondriaanFoundation and a number of other organizations. The Dutch governmentbelieves that the contribution of Dutch art and culture is important for reasonsof cultural politics.

Venice Biennale

The Mondriaan Foundation has been responsible for the Dutch contributionto the Venice Biennale since 1995, and appoints a curator for each biennale. In 2008 the Mondriaan Foundation appointed Saskia Bos, Dean of the Schoolof Art at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, as curatorof the Dutch entry at the 53rd International Art Exhibition in Venice. She selectedthe artist Fiona Tan to represent the Netherlands. Born 1966 in Indonesia,Fiona Tan is the daughter of a Chinese father and an Australian mother. She hasbeen living and working in Amsterdam for more than 20 years. For the Biennale,a new work by Tan will refer to Venice’s pivotal position in the history of geostrategyin the time before the discovery of new routes to Asia diluted the city’s power.Tan’s fascination with geography, travellers and their journeys has led herto explore the biographies of famous merchants and the desire to acquire newexperiences and possessions. Her project Disorient attempts to bridge the centuriesby creating connections with both contemporary day-to-day reality and withthe symbolic past that every visitor to Venice wants to grasp.

The Venice Biennale will be held from 7 June to 22 November 2009.

7. Internationalization projects

The Mondriaan Foundation also supports international activities in the Netherlands. The main aim is to present international developments to the Dutch publicand to encourage the participation of the Netherlands in the international circuit.Activities supported in this context by the foundation in 2008 include: the inter-national fashion presentation Bridges to Fashion in Rotterdam; the lecture seriesNow is the Time in W139 in Amsterdam; and various publications and lectureson the relationship between journalism and art with Violet Agency – Art foundationin Amsterdam.

Funding was also provided for journalists’ travelling expenses. Journalistsworking for major international journals and newspapers were enabled to visitthe Netherlands to report on Dutch contemporary art and design. And Dutchjournalists were supported in covering important events in other countries.Het Financieele Dagblad for instance, published articles on Asia TriennialManchester, Beijing Art Fair, Busan Biennial, Dak’Art, Gwangju Biennial, JoburgContemporary Art Fair, Panama Art Biennial, Biennial São Paulo, ShanghaiBiennial, Singapore Biennial and the Sydney Biennial.
