We also have the following sub committees – Sailing - chaired by the Vice Commodore, and Bar ledby Elaine Fowler. Ray Ridley is our Bosun and keeps the safety boats working (and run eachweekend through the winter) and is often found in the boathouse during the week as well asweekends. As always there are many jobs to do from club and boat maintenance through manningthe bar, cutting the grass and beach party for open meetings to administration that can be doneremotely. Please let me know if you can help in any way – drop me an email. We’re all unpaidvolunteers and would like to spend as much time as we can sailing rather than administrating!

Winter upgrades and maintenance

We have many new and exciting projects lined up for 2017. As you know there is no sailing at theclub until the end of March, so for the next couple of months we will be focusing on preparing for therest of the year.

This includes some very necessary work at the clubhouse -refreshing the décor, adding somecupboards, replacing the leaking windows, painting some of the steel containers, painting theoutside benches, pressure washing the patio, some electrical work in the boat house, the newscreens to the ladies changing room, re-sealing the clubhouse floor and mending the road.

Work parties have already commenced and are on Saturdays at 10.00 am to 2.00 pm with baconbutties and burgers for breakfast and lunch respectively (chef required - enquire within). We do relyon volunteers to get this work done before the sailing season starts, at the end of March, rather thanincorporate within the formal duties requirement and I would like to continue this way, so if you areavailable even for a few hours over the next couple of months please drop by.

Additionally, the club owned boats need a thorough refurbishment over the winter and I’m verygrateful that Matt Fowler is going to lead this project. He does however need some support.

The Sailing School is seeking either informal help on Saturday mornings (readying dinghies, launching and recovering) and /or more formal dinghy instructors (full training support given) to helpsustain the long term future of the Sailing School. If you would like to help out in this area pleaseemail Bill Bracey at [email protected]

We are also looking at a website refresh and perhaps some software to help with the clubadministration.

Events 2017

Our first event of the year will consist of a supper talk on the Thursday 23 February welcoming backMike McNamara, current Wayfarer National Champion and winner of over 20 nationalchampionships in two handed monohull classes over the years. You can often see him at the RYAdinghy show giving well received tutorials on sail tuning. Please book by the 16 of Februaryemailing social secretary - [email protected]. The event will be free to members who have paid theirsubs by then. We have extended a welcome to the members of local dinghy sailing clubs.

We’ll be attending the RYA Dinghy show at Alexandra Palace on Saturday the 4th March again. The show opens at 10am and members typically get there under their own steam and we meet upin the main bar at c 12.30 for lunch. It’s the best show to view a huge variety of different dinghiesand pick up all the string, shackles and clothing you need for the forthcoming year at good showprices.

Weekend sailing will commence at the end of March, Tuesday and Thursday evening sailing (incwindsurfing) in mid-April and Cadets will start at the beginning of May. Dick Holttum is currentlyputting together the calendar for the year ahead which we hope to have published around mid-February. In the meantime a number of PBSC sailors are sailing the Bough Beech Icicle series anda few have gone off to contend the Laser series at Weir Wood – bring back the trophies!

Other key dates for your diary include the Federation Cup weekend on the 17/18 June, we hopeto host a pursuit race on the Saturday with a social event in the evening, and a full day’s seriousracing on the Sunday. This is the annual local coastal dinghy interclub regatta and we are thecurrent holders of the cup. Last year’s hosts, Eastbourne Sovereign Sailing Club, were a bit miffedto have lost it and I think they’ll be working pretty hard to win it back this year.

Summer camp at the idyllic waterside location of Cobnor by the water's edge at Chichester Harbouris scheduled for the 22nd to 30th of July, this is a typical Swallows and Amazons week cruisingup and down the various reaches of the harbour stopping off for ice creams, pub lunches and beachbarbecues along the way. Join for a couple of days or the whole week. An amazing antidote to thestresses of modern electronic gizmo-dominated life. Roger Humphries is organising; please emailfor details:- [email protected].

Sea Week is planned for the 14th to the 18th of August, with the usual fun filled week of familycamping, cruising to Cooden and Airbourne, some fun racing, evening barbecues in the sunset, campfires under the stars and late night karaoke.

On the 2nd of September we have the pleasure of hosting the Laser Masters fleet returning for atwo day Laser Masters Autumn Championship event where we expect approximately 70 competitors.

All events can be found on the website http://www.pbsc.eu/calendar/

Messages from Committee

Time to take your mast down! There are a number of masts still standing and we would recommendthese be taken down as soon as possible. It is amazing to see the windage effect a winter storm can haveand if your boat is blown across the boat park, not only will it damage your dinghy but others too, as wesaw last year. Please also make sure your boats are securely tied down using the ropes attached to thesunken tyres.

Subscriptions. You will have no doubt received a request to pay your annual subscriptions, (see below)and we’ll be grateful if this could be actioned as soon as possible, as this is the time of the year when theclub has limited funds, but plenty to spend out on in terms of annual maintenance and facilities upgrades. Please note that there is an at an early bird discount if you pay by the end of March.

Your trailer is at risk! Please make sure your trailers are clearly marked with your name and boat number. There are many unmarked trailers padlocked to the northern fence for which ownership is unclear. If wecannot trace the owners, we’ll be seeking to remove and dispose by mid April.

Hi Everyone.

Along with your thoughts of maintenance and future sailing please considerthe training on offer at the club.

Level 1. After the taster days are held we may run Saturday afternoon level1 courses in the spring and autumn if there is enough interest. Last year'sautumn course was particularly good with 12 people attending over theduration of the course. We hope to see some of you back for the next stage.

Level 1/2. We will be offering an RYA level 1/2 on Tuesday evenings startingon the 18th April. If you know of anyone who would be interested please putthem in touch with me.

Improvers. For those wanting to improve their skills there will be ourThursday night sessions starting on 20th April. It would be good to see somemore of you there this year. The training on offer will be tailored to suitthose attending and can include spinnaker, trapezing and racing skills. It willbe run as RYA sessions so training will count towards RYA level 3.

Instructors. For any one interested in going further we are always on thelookout for members who would like to become instructors to help memberslearn and improve their sailing. Buzz Active (Spray Water) will be holding aDinghy Instructor course in April.

Cadets. Cadet sessions will start Saturday mornings beginning the 6th May.It would be really good to see the new Fevas the club has purchased out onthe water.

Power. We are planning to run some power boat training for level 1/2 and 3but the dates have not yet been agreed. Please keep a lookout for furtherinformation

Windsurfing. Our experienced members will be running less formal trainingfor anyone interested in windsurfing. Please look out for announcements ofdates and times.

Any assistance anyone can provide in helping look after the club boats will begreatly appreciated.
