Aquabics/Aqua Energizer – Incorporates a variety of traveling and static movements that get yourheart pumping and muscles working. May include use of water weights. Deep water with a belt, shal-low in waist height water OR lanes with a belt and tether.

Bootcamp – Work every muscle and push your limits in this fast paced fun group workout. A varietyof exercise approaches used to provide a total body workout.

BoxFit – Work out your frustrations on the punching bag or with a partner in this exciting box fitgroup workout.

Core and More/Ultimate Core – Variety of workouts targeting strength building, cardio and core con-ditioning using bodyweight.

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) – Intense, time-based exercise class designed to challengeyou from head to toe.

Kettlebell – Ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training using acast iron ball with a handle.

Low-impact Water Movement – Keep moving with the resistance of the water, without the pressureon your joints. Perfect for the aging population or those with aching joints.

Muscle Conditioning – Total body workout targeting your large and small muscles to get your heartrate going.

Sit & Be Fit – Seated and inclusive exercise program. Uses light weights and stretching. Great forthose with physical limitations.

Spin – Biking without worrying about the weather using stationary cycles at different speeds and in-tensities. We even have a special class for seniors.

Step – Combination of cardio using the step and conditioning using hand weights.

Strong Seniors – Cardio, strength, balance and core for the strong seniors that have remained active alltheir lives and are looking to exercise in a group format.

Total Body Benderball – Includes the use of benderballs (small green inflatable balls) for cardio, coreand strengthening exercises.

TRX – This class uses the TRX suspension system. Allows people to use their own body weight to de-velop strength and endurance.

Yoga – Postures connected by flowing sequences and rhythmic breathing. Please bring a mat and leavefeeling relaxed. Many kinds of yoga to choose from.

Zumba® – A total body combination of low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style,calorie-burning dance fitness party. We even have Zumba® Toning with optional toning sticks and AquaZumba® for less impact in the pool (shallow)!

Thunder Bay Aquatics is looking to expand our staff to anyone 16 and older interested in becomingcertified swim instructors. We are always looking for highly motivated individuals who enjoy working with

children in an aquatic setting to teach swimming lessons at any of our three facilities.The chart below indicates which courses you need to take to become certified!

As a swimming instructor you work directly with children teaching them valuable life skills.You will become an imperative part of their growth. The starting wage for this position is $15.33/hour.

**We are especially interested in training and hiring adult instructorswho are looking for a career change or trying something new.

Child and Youth Aquatic ProgramsTo Determine which Level your Child Should be In Please read the course descriptions below

PARENT & TOT 1Designed for the 4 to 12-month-old to learn to enjoythe water with the parent. Orientation to pool andbeing safe around water. This program will create acomfort level for both child and parent. Entries/exits,floats and movement.

PARENT & TOT 2Designed for the 12 to 24-month-old to learn to enjoythe water with the parent, Unassisted entries/exits.Floats with an aid, submersion in water, activitieswith instructor/other parents.

PARENT & TOT 3Designed for the 2 to 3-year-old to learn to enjoy thewater with the parent. Your child will experiencesafety awareness and water skills through discovery,front and back floats, submersion and movementskills. Active parent participation is required.

PRESCHOOL AWe encourage the parent to participate until theirchild lets them know they can do it themselves (thankyou very much). These preschoolers will have funlearning to get in and out of the water. We’ll helpthem jump into chest deep water. They’ll try floatson their front and back, and glides on their backwhile wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).They’ll learn to get their face wet and blow bubblesunderwater.

PRESCHOOL BThese preschoolers learn to jump into chest deepwater by themselves, and get in and get out wearinga personal flotation device. They’ll submerge and ex-hale underwater. While wearing a personal flotationdevice they’ll glide on their front and back.Prerequisite: Completed Preschool A.

PRESCHOOL CThese youngsters will try both jumping and a side rollinto deep water while wearing a personal flotation de-vice. They’ll recover objects from the bottom inwaist-deep water. They’ll work on kicking and glidingthrough the water on their front and back.Prerequisite: Completed Preschool B.

PRESCHOOL DAdvanced preschoolers will learn to do solo jumpsinto deeper water and get out by themselves. They’lldo side roll entries and open their eyes underwater.They’ll master a short (3–5 m) swim on their frontand gliding and kicking on their side.Prerequisite: Completed Preschool C.

PRESCHOOL EThese youngsters get more adventuresome with a for-ward roll entry wearing a PFD and holding theirbreath underwater for up to 10 sec. They’ll work onlonger front and back crawl swims, interval trainingand get a giggle out of whip kick.Prerequisite: Completed Preschool D.

SWIMMER 1These beginners will become comfortable jumpinginto water with and without a personal flotation device.They’ll learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold theirbreath underwater. They’ll work on floats, glides andkicking through the water on their front and back.Prerequisite: Beginner, non-swimmer or Preschool A,B or C.

SWIMMER 2These advanced beginners will jump into deeperwater, and learn to be comfortable falling sidewaysinto the water wearing a personal flotation device.They’ll be able to support themselves at the surfacewithout an aid, learn whip kick, swim 10–15 m ontheir front and back, and be introduced to flutter kickinterval training (4 x 9–12 m).Prerequisite: Swimmer 1 or Preschool D or E.

SWIMMER 3These junior swimmers will dive and do in-waterfront somersaults. Their new bag of tricks includeshandstands and completion of the Canadian Swim toSurvive® Standard. They’ll work on 10 15m of frontcrawl, back crawl and whip kick. Flutter kick intervaltraining increases to 4 x 25 m.Prerequisite: Swimmer 2.

SWIMMER 4These intermediate swimmers will swim 5 m under-water and lengths of front, back crawl, whip kick, andbreaststroke arms with breathing. They’ll cap it all offwith front crawl sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m frontor back crawl interval training.Prerequisite: Swimmer 3.

SWIMMER 5These swimmers will master shallow dives, cannon-ball entries, eggbeater kicks, and in-water backwardsomersaults. Surface dives will take them down to un-derwater swims. They’ll refine their front and backcrawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over15–25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25 m sprintsand two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or backcrawl; and 4 x 10–15 m breaststroke.Prerequisite: Swimmer 4.

Child and Youth Aquatic Programs

SWIMMER 6These advanced swimmers will rise to the challengeof sophisticated aquatic skills including stride en-tries, compact jumps and lifesaving kicks like egg-beater and scissor kick. They’ll develop strength andpower in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m.They’ll easily swim lengths of front crawl, backcrawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll complain aboutthe 300 m workout.Prerequisite: Swimmer 5.

SWIMMER 7 (ROOKIE)Swimmers continue stroke development with 50mswims of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke.Lifesaving sport skills include a 25 m obstacle swimand 15m object carry. First aid focuses on assessmentof conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treatmentfor bleeding. Fitness improves in 350 m workoutsand 100 m timed swims. Prerequisite: Swimmer 6.

SWIMMER 8 (RANGER)Swimmers develop better strokes over 75 m swimsof each stroke. They tackle lifesaving sport skills ina lifesaving medley, timed object support and rescuewith a buoyant aid. First aid focuses on assessmentoff unconscious victims, treatment of victims inshock and obstructed airway procedures. Skill drillsdevelop a strong lifesaving foundation. Prerequisite:Rookie Patrol.

SWIMMER 9 (STAR)Swimmers are challenged with 600m workouts;300m timed swims and a 25 m object carry. Strokesare refined over 100 m swims. First aid focuses ontreatment of bone or joint injuries and respiratoryemergencies including asthma and allergic reactions.Lifesaving skills include defence methods, victim re-movals and rolling over and supporting a victim faceup in shallow water.Prerequisite: Range Patrol.

BRONZE STARExcellent preparation for success in Bronze Medal-lion. Participants develop problem-solving and de-cision making skills individually and in partners.Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesavingskills needed to be their own lifeguard. Includes atimed 400m swim.Prerequisite: 10 to 12 years old and Star Patrol.

Community Aquatics

Admission StandardsAs part of our commitment to providing safe and enjoyable aquatic programs for swimmers of all ages, we arecontinuing to enforce the admission standards provided to us by the Ministry of Health. To help us in thismaintain this standard please keep the following in mind when visiting our pools:

1) There must be one supervising caregiver for every 2 children under the age of 6.2) There must be one supervising caregiver for every 4 non-swimming children aged 6 to 9.

In both cases the supervising caregiver must be able to give immediate assistance. If you have any questionsplease feel free to call Volunteer Pool at 345-5143 or Churchill Pool at 577-2538.

Churchill and Volunteer PoolFor additional information about our programs, services or facilities please check the City of Thunder Bay’s website.

The City of Thunder Bay is adapting its programming to meet the diverse needs of the population while also implementingmeasures to protect its staff and users. When our facilities reopen our schedules and number of permitted bathers will be verydifferent than what was offered prior to COVID-19.

Lane swimming will be offered with a greatly reduced number of bathers. They will be reserved in one hour blocks.

Family Swims (provided all swimmers are from the same home) will be offered with a greatly reduced number of bathers.Swim times will be reserved in adance.

Family swimming lessons will be offered (provided all swimmers are from the same home) with a parent or caregiver in thewater and the swim instructor teaching from the deck.

At this time public swimming, group rentals, birthday parties and AquaFitness are not being scheduled.

Please pay attention to the City’s website for updates on scheduling and facility reopening.
