Swim ClassesRed Cross swim classes are designed to help swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their watersafety, survival and swim skills. Courses are age-appropriate and fun, helping participants stay motivated and achieve success on a regular basis. As children progress through the various levels, they increase their comfort level in and around the water. North of the River also provides Private Lessons that focus on one student.

Classes are 30 minutes in length.Monday through Friday for 2 weeks.

American Red CrossClass DescriptionsParent and Child (6 mos to 3yrs.)Parents and children learn together to increase children’s comfort in the water and build a foundation ofbasic aquatic and water safety skills. Introduced are basic skills appropriate for this age group as well as safety topics for parents and children: enter and exit the pool, blowing bubbles, arm and leg action, front and back float. All skills taught are with physical support from the parent. The philosophy of this class is to help your child feel comfortable in the water. As the parent, you will be teaching your child to relax and have fun in the water as well as learn safety skills. Please note: this class will not teach your child how to swim. This class is the first step to getting your child started in the water. As your child progresses to thenext levels he or she will begin to swim comfortably on their own.

Beginning Toddler (3 to 5yrs.)Introduction to Water SkillsOrients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.New Skills: Enter and exit water safely, blowing bubbles, open eyes under water, float on front and back, roll over, arm and leg action on front and back and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Enterunassisted, bob 5 times to chin level and safely exit the water. Participants can walk, travel along the gutter or swim. Float on front with support for 3 seconds, roll to back with assistance and float on back with support for 3 seconds.)

Advanced Toddler (3 to 5yrs.)Fundamental Aquatic SkillsHelps children gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around water.New Skills: Jumping into water, submerge entire head, front and back glide, combined arm and leg action on front, finning, sculling and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Step from side into chest-deep

water, move into front float for 5 seconds, roll over to a back float. Push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions.) Five year olds who successfully complete Advanced Toddler are eligible for Level 1.

Level 1(6 yrs. and up)Introduction to Water SkillsHelps participants feel comfortable in the water.New Skills: Blowing bubbles through nose and mouth, open eyes under water and retrieve objects, backfloat on front and roll over, arm and leg actions on front and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Enterunassisted, bob 5 times to chin level and safely exit the water. Participants can walk, travel along the gutter or swim. Level 3Stroke DevelopmentBuilds on skills with practice in deeper water.New Skills: Head-first entry, rotary breathing, treading water, front and back crawl, butterfly kick and bodymotion, elementary backstroke and safety skills. (Exit Skill Assessment: Jump into chest-deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and

rhythmic breathing pattern (to front or side), maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim back crawl 15 yards.)

Level 4Stroke ImprovementDevelops confidence and improves skills.New Skills: Dive from compact position, swim underwater, surface dive, rotary breathing with front crawl, breastroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly, sidestroke and safety skills. (Exit Skill Assessment: Perform a feet-first entry into chest deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (float or sculling), swim backstroke for 25 yards, and swim breaststroke for 25 yards.)

Level 5Stroke RefinementProvides further coordination and refinement of strokes.New Skills: Shallow-angle dive from side, survival float, flip turns, treading water, side stroke and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Perform a shallow-angle dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, maintain position on back for 2 minutes in deep water (float or sculling) and swim backstroke for25 yards. Swim breast stroke for 25 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and swim butterfly for 25 yards.)

Private LessonsNorth Beardsley and NOR Pools offer one-on-one Private Swim Lessons for all levels, from Parent/Child through Adult.

Getting your child into the right class.Parent and child classes introduce children three years of age or younger to the water.Toddler classes are for children three to five years of age who are comfortable in the water and do not need a parent present. Children who are six years of age or older and just learning to swim should enroll in Level 1.

Diving Lessons Learn to dive with individualized lessons. Lessons may consist of basic dives from the pool side or more skillful dives using the one meter board.

Junior LifeguardingLearn what it takes to be a great lifeguard- from lifesaving and leadership skills to fitness and professional development. The experience you gain through the Junior Lifeguarding program will help you prepare for Red Cross lifeguard training. This program is intended for those aspiring to become lifeguards and are between the ages of 11 and 14. Participants should bring a swim suit, towel and sunscreen.

NEW! WATER FITNESS CLASSES at NOR!

AQUA CONDITIONING Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 7:15-8:15pm at Greenacres Pool.

High energy low-impact exercise class in shallow water that increases flexibility and overall fitness.

DEEP WATER INTERVALS Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:30am-9:30am at NOR Pool.

This non-impact vigorous workout will challenge your body while being gentle on your knees, hips and spine while strengthening your back and increasing circulation and flexibility. No swimming skills necessary.

This class will train you for an exciting job as a certified Lifeguard. The course includes: Lifeguarding skills, First Aid, CPR for adults, youth and infants, CPR for the Professional Rescuer which includes AED administration, Bloodborne Pathogen training, and Oxygen Administration. The class includes a series of physical tests prior to certification. Students must continuously swim 300 yards using 100 yards of Front Crawl, 100 yards of Breast Stroke, and 100 yards of Front Crawl or Breast Stroke. Students will also be required to swim the length of the pool, surface dive from a 10 foot pool, pick up a 10 pound brick from the bottom, and swim back to the starting point while holding the brick with two hands above the water. The students will need to be able to tread water for at least 3 minutes with no hands. Homework is included in this course and will be assigned every class meeting.The American Red Cross is offering free Lifeguard classes for military families and Veterans. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course will train instructor candidates to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants’ progress. Students must be at least 16 years old on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course, complete the Fundamental of Instructor Training course, and demonstrate and perform the following swimming skills: • Swim 25 yards of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke, and 15 yards of Butterfly• Maintain position on back for one minute in deep water floating or sculling• Tread water for one minute
