Topic: Patterns and movement
Teaching Method: Direct
OBJECTIVES:
The students have learned the skills of synchro and will now be putting thesepieces together to create patterns as a team in the water.
OUTCOMES:
Students will develop skills, which will promote lifelong recreational activity.
Students will explain how knowledge about movement patterns and performance
cues learned during the aquatics unit can be transferred to other physical activity
areas (ex. gymnastics).
Students will develop an appreciation of the contribution of aquatics to personal
fitness.
Students will understand and use the vocabulary associated with water-related
activity.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:
Be aware of where your body parts are in proximity to others because there will be
feet close to other peoples faces today.

ACTIVITIES SEQUENCE:
1. Warm-up (8 minutes)2. Motivational set (2 minutes)3. Instruction of summersault (2 minutes)4. Practice of summersault (2 minutes)5. Instruction of patterns (2 minutes)6. Practice of patterns (10 minutes)7. Instruction of group movement (2 minutes)8. Practice of group movement (10 minutes)9. If there is time left over they may get into their groups and work on their
routines.
MANAGEMENT IMPLICATIONS: The students will be in the water during most of
the instruction so I will be making sure that they are in close while I am talking. To
make sure the students understand some of the movements I will be joining them inthe pool to help them out.
WARM UP: The students have been working on their breathing so today they will
swim as far as they can under water for 2 lengths. Then they will do the breathing in
between strokes in the front crawl. They will do 5 strokes then breath, then 7 on the
way back, then 9 and then 11.
MOTIVATIONAL SET: The synchronize swimmers at the world level use gelatin mix
and put it in there hair so it stays stiff and does not move while they are performing.I will ask the students if they have picked out songs and if they did any research last
night for their performance.

Summersault You will start in the
back layout pose.
From here you will
move into the tub
pose (both knees
towards chest).From here you will
look back into the
water and bring
your feet towards
your head and into
the water.
Each student will
practice each step
of this and do it 4
times correctly
front and back
before we move on
Quick movements
will ensure that
you flip straight
back into your
summersault. Eyes
should be lookingdown into the
water so your body
follows.
Use what we
learned from
diving to transfer

From the back
layout position you
will lift your legs so
they are in a v
shape and then roll
your body throughto do a front
summersault.
over to synchro.
Patterns There are 4
patterns I will be
teaching the
students.
Star: your heads
will be together in
a back layout with
your hands by your
sides sculling.Reverse star:
your feet will be
together and hands
will be by your
sides sculling.
Side Boat: you will
be in a boat pose
on your side. You
will have your
outside arm behind
touching your legsand the other arm
will be holding on
to the ankle of the
person in front of
you.
Snowflake: this is
similar to the star
but you will be
alternating with
the person next toyou. So if your head
is in the center,
their feet will be in
the center. The
people with their
feet out will spread
I will be showing
the students a
picture of the
pattern I want
them to create and
then they will
practice getting in
and out of these
shapes.
Transitions may be
underwater or
above water.
I have made a
poster that has
pictures of people
doing these shapes
so they will know
what they are
going to look like
before they create
them. For all ofthese shapes it is
important that
they all stay a float.
They need to
remember to look
at the ceiling to
keep their head up
and to keep their
hips pushed high to
stay a float.

their legs and the
people beside them
will hold onto their
ankles.
Movement Movement as a
group- thestudents will stay
as a group for most
of their routine. It
is important that
they move as a unit
at all times.
Accordion- the
students will hold
hands and link feet.On counts of 8 they
will release and
then squeeze back
together.
To start this off and
get them used tomoving together
they will scull as a
group in one spot
then they will
move forwards or
backwards as I
direct them.
They will go in and
out of the
accordion 5 times
It is very important
that everyone stays
at the surface forthis one. They need
to make sure that
they do not loose
grip of their hands
and feet.
**if there is any time left I will let the students start working on their routines.
CLOSURE/SUMMARY/REVIEW:
We will review what we went over today, we have gone over movement in the waterand formations, why are these important so synchronized swimming? Reminder:
tomorrow will be a work period for the final project and we will be playing
badminton on Friday at TDC.
