    LAMBORGHINI

    Company History :

Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A is an Italian manufacturer ofluxury sports cars which is

owned by Volkswagen Group through its subsidiary Audi. Lamborghini's production facilityand headquarters are located in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy. In 2011, Lamborghini's 831

    employees produced 1,711 vehicles.

Manufacturing magnate Ferruccio Lamborghini founded Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini

S.p.A. in 1963 with the objective of producing a refined grand touring carto compete with

offerings from established marquees such as Ferrari. The company's first models were

released in the mid-1960s and were noted for their refinement, power and comfort.

Lamborghini gained wide acclaim in 1966 for the Miura sports coup, which established rear

mid-engine, rear wheel drive as the standard layout for high-performance cars of the era.

Lamborghini grew rapidly during its first decade, but hard times befell the company when

sales plunged in the wake of the 1973 worldwide financial downturn and the 1973 oil crisis.

The firm's ownership changed three times after 1973, including a bankruptcy in 1978,

before Chrysler Corporation took control in 1987. Unable to operate Lamborghini profitably,

Chrysler sold Lamborghini to Malaysian investment group Mycom Setdco and Indonesian

group V'Power Corporation in 1994. Lack of success continued through the 1990s, until

Mycom Setdco and V'Power sold Lamborghini to the AUDI AG subsidiary ofVolkswagen

Group on 27 July 1998. Audi's ownership marked the beginning of a period of stability and

increased productivity for Lamborghini. Sales increased nearly tenfold over the course of the

2000s, peaking with record sales in 2007 and 2008. The world financial crisis in the late

2000s negatively affected all luxury car makers worldwide, and caused Lamborghini's sales

    to drop nearly 50 percent.

Lamborghini's Sant'Agata Bolognese production facility produces V12 engines and finished

automobiles. Lamborghini's current production vehicles are the V10-powered Gallardo and

the V12-powered Aventador. Both production models are available in a variety of regular and

    limited-edition specifications.

China accounts for 15%). The Middle East and South Africa account for 8%.

Despite global market headwinds especially in the segment of the super sports cars which still

has not recovered to the levels of 2008, Lamborghini grew in Europe by 34% versus 2011, in

the Americas by 50% (USA +53%) and in Asia Pacific by 9%.

In 2013 the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster, the most extraordinary open top super sports car,

has joined the successful coup. Initial pre-order expectations for this model have been

    Quality Philosphy:

The name Lamborghini means quality, reliability and technical excellence. At Lamborghini,

we measure our success in terms of:

    * customer satisfaction

    * employee satisfaction

    * quality of products

    * quality of processes

    * on-time delivery

    * productivity

Quality as an overall philosophy - Quality Department

"You don't get quality through testing and analysis alone. Quality is created through

planning and preparation, through intelligence and motivation. Ultimately, precision and

quality are amongst our highest corporate goals."

    Holger Weichhaus, Dir

    Quality Philosophy And Quality Management

Innovative power means quality for the customer

Lamborghini's power of innovation flows into its quality from the very first step in the

development process. Lamborghini Design operates with the most advanced methods

and with high-precision virtual data models. This requirement for absolute perfection

carries through the entire engineering process. All areas work with mathematical models

incorporating absolute zero tolerances. This process of product development isaccompanied by an intensive test program and by fastidious selection and development

of the supplier network. Both are unique among luxury automotive brands. The

production facilities at Lamborghini are among the most modern in the automotive

industry. Quality Department with instruments like the Master Body Center. Tradition

and innovation, craftsmanship and high technology shape every Lamborghini into a

    unique, luxurious, quality product.

    Quality means mastering enormous complexity

The achievement of ambitious quality goals is considerably tougher for a manufacturerlike Lamborghini than for a high-volume producer. The number of vehicles leaving the

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    11/21

production halls at Sant'Agata Bolognese in a whole year is more exclusive than those

produced by many manufacturers in a single day. However, the degree of

individualization is on a level utterly incomparable with that of a mass-produced model.

At the end of the day, customers in the luxury segment expect a product that has been

designed and executed perfectly in accordance with his wishes and expectations - down

to the tiniest det the overall lifecycle of our products we ensure shrewd use of resources,

thus enhancing our credibility and rising in public esteem."

The Quality of the Project - Design and Development

"Quality of Engineering is to be able to satisfy the expectations of all involved company

departments at the same time. Quality is the result of an integrated global approach"

Maurizio Reggiani, Director Research and Development

The Centro Stile, Lamborghini's design facility, boasts outstanding technological

leadership. The design of a new model is now carried out here in a purely virtual

process. Work is done at the computer, with the results evaluated via three-dimensional

imaging. The classic clay models, shaped using scraping tools and still used to this day in

almost all design departments, are no longer to be found at Lamborghini. The benefits

are compelling - extremely precise data models exist from day one; designers and

engineers can work hand-in-hand from the very start. Aerodynamic and acoustic

simulation is completed simultaneously with the design - to the very best quality. The

first physical model in 1:1 scale is cut from the final design data and is made for

validation and testing purposes, including the work carried out in the wind tunnel. This

process is enormously beneficial to efficiency and quality in equal measure.

    Perfect design - best quality

Perfect design is an especially important quality issue for Lamborghini, and not just

because of the unique fascination of the vehicles. "Form follows function" is one of the

fundamental principles applied here. Quality in form and function are closely linked. One

example is the movable bodyshell parts, such as the rear spoiler and the additional

engine cooling vents on the Aventador. They are perfectly integrated into the form and

are automatically deployed only as required.

    The precision of mathematical models

Lamborghini is building on the quality of its mathematical models and their subsequent

translation into extremely precise hardware with the likes of consistent lightweight

design using carbon-fiber technology. The super sports car brand has developed a

unique level of competence in the calculation and simulation of highly complex CFRP

structures. Extremely accurate collision calculations can be carried out using the so-

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    12/21

called "building block" method, with the real-life model once again used only for

validation purposes. The very highest precision is also applied to CFRP production at

Lamborghini - the monocoque of the new Aventador is built to a tolerance of 0.01

millimeters. The high CFRP quality is also visible to the eye of the customer - the frame

of the engine cover on the Gallardo is the largest CFRP component in the entire

automotive sector with a grade-A surface finish. The lightweight parts from visible

carbon fiber on the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera and the Gallardo Spyder LP 570-4

Performante display absolute perfection in fiber orientation and paintwork.

Lamborghini lays just as much importance on its testing as a volume manufacturer.

Every material used and every component built must undergo the toughest sign-off

procedures. Single prototypes run up to 80,000 kilometers in one driving cycle, under

conditions more rigorous than could ever be applied by a customer.

Quality of Materials and Suppliers - Purchasing

"The quality of our products is heavily dependent upon the quality of our suppliers. This

is why we work intensively with them on the fulfillment of the very highest quality

standards - undertaking however many iterations are required to reach the perfect

    result."

    Stefan Khne, Director Purchasing

The purchasing function plays a very special role in quality management at Automobili

Lamborghini. At the end of the day, around 80 percent of the component value is

sourced from external suppliers - and they must fulfill the exact requiremeity

Lamborghini employees at all hierarchical levels think and act in processes, and

contribute to the fulfillment of objectives according to their responsibilities and in

    keeping with the following principles:

Result orientation and creation of value

We at Lamborghini believe that providing a higher performance than our competitors is

crucial to achieving excellent commercial results in the long term, in the interests of

    customers, staff, suppliers and society.

    Customer orientation

We place our customers' expectations at the heart of our actions, both internal and

external. Our benchmark for achieving success is the satisfaction of our customers and

    their loyalty to the company.

    Leadership and consistency of objectives

Our activities are structured and systematically harmonized. Our strategic orientation

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    13/21

and quality awareness, as well as the constant commitment of our management and

staff lead us to excellent performance.

    Management by facts and processes

Our consistent orientation and evaluation of processes lead us to quick fulfillment of our

objectives through optimum allocation of resources. Decisions are made based on facts

    and strategic orientation.

    Staff growth and involvement

Our employees are the source of the quality and success of our performance. Granting

them active involvement, we encourage good and qualified employees to join our

    workforce.

    Regular training, innovation and improvement

Professionally speaking, all Lamborghini employees grow continuously through learning

and creativity. Our process of ongoing improvement is based on a successful exchange

of knowledge and direct interaction with the best people.

    Partnerships

A cooperative attitude toward our suppliers and other companies ensures solid business

    relationships with mutual benefit.

    Social responsibility

Our expertise and involvement in environmental and social issues build trust in the

public opinion. Innts of Lamborghini in every single detail. The scale is impressive -

overall, there are more than 1,000 production suppliers on Automobili Lamborghini's

    supplier list.

    A highly complex system

A super sports car like the new Aventador LP 700-4 consists of around 2,150 different

parts and sub-assemblies. However, this number is wholly insufficient in describing the

true complexity - because the complete monocoque, made in-house from a diverse

range of raw materials using a sophisticated process, has only one single part number.

Another example of a sub-assembly is the front headlamp - it is made up of 84 individual

parts that the system supplier sources from a range of second-tier suppliers. This is a

highly complex chain, the many aspects of which are controlled, monitored and, in many

cases, also trained by Lamborghini purchasing.

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    14/21

Continuous improvement is the focal point

In parallel with the development process for a new model, the purchasing department

carries out the necessary preparations to supplier system - every supplier is

comprehensively examined for its technological expertise, for the reliability of its logistics

and, above all, for the consistency of its quality. A special "production readiness team"

that was introduced around two years ago as another factor in its quality offensive works

with the individual suppliers on the improvement of their components - until a perfect

    result is achieved.

    Automobili Lamborghini -

World Quality Leader in Automotive Luxury

For Automobili Lamborghini, quality is a fundamental company value, on the same level

as fascinating design and ultimate performance. But quality means a whole lot more to

the Italian luxury sports cars manufacturer than flawless function and absolute reliability.

For Lamborghini, quality is a total mindset across all areas, from engineering through

production to customer service, and with one clear objective - to fulfill customer

expectations in every way, shape and form.

By combining state-of-the-art technologies with perfect craftsmanship, Lamborghini

attains a level that is utterly unique in the global competitive field of luxury automotive

brands. Thanks to state-of-the-art processes in design and development, thanks to the

Lamborghini production system with one of the most advanced assembly lines in the

industry and thanks to Lamborghini quality management as a consistent corporate

philosophy, Lamborghini sets new benchmarks in its segment. The super sports car

brand has mastered the art and the complexity of highly individualized low-volume

series production in a very special way.

Leading position among the luxury brands

In order to earn this leading position among the global luxury brands, as Lamborghini

has done, a whole raft of corporate values has to be in place. The starting point is a high

degree of exclusivity. A distinguished brand history with the associated tradition and

craftsmanship is also part of the mix, as is a distinctive product character and the right

pedigree - for Lamborghini, this is the "Terra di Motori" in northern Italy. As a luxury

brand in the automotive sector, innovation is a further and equally significant factor for

Lamborghini. Every model clearly justifies its place at the technological pinnacle; the

carbon-fiber monocoque of theone example of the consistent quality management

applied to all levels of the development and production process. A particularly striking

and almost legendary element is the final aspect of quality work - every new

Lamborghini is first run for just under an hour on a test rig for final commissioning and

initial checks. Then every single vehicle is handed over to a test driver and put through

its paces on public roads over around 80 kilometers. A comprehensive checklist

complements the extensive experience and enormous skill of the test drivers. They miss

neither the tiniest irregular sound nor the slightest unexpected vibration - every

Lamborghini must sound and feel absolutely perfect. This is why a brand new

Lamborghini is never delivered with zero miles on the clock - the first 200 or so

kilometers of this fascinating automotive life are driven purely in the name of quality

    assurance.

Process Quality - Assembly and Production

"Every Lamborghini is 'handmade in Italy'. We combine outstanding craftsmanship and

hi-tech precision in a unique way. And we have built the world's most modern production

    equipment to do that."

    Ranieri Niccoli, Industrial Director

The principles of modern automotive manufacturing, of lean production and offensive

quality management, were developed for high-volume manufacturers and, until now,

used almost exclusively in that field. With the "Lamborghini Production System", the

luxury sports car maker from Sant'Agata Bolognese has developed these ideas for highly

individualized low-volume manufacturing and built one of the world's most modern

production facilities. It is within this combination of traditional craftsmanship, precise,

high-technology equipment and exceptionally well-trained and motivated people that the

world's most fascinating super sports cars come to life.

Highly complex manufacturing with motivated employees

In many of its aspects, the low-volume production of luxury vehicles is more cector

    Quality Department

The Quality function conceives, develops and coordinates all elements of Lamborghini

quality management in an ongoing process. Overall, recent years have seen this function

take on a far more significant role within the company. All processes have been

reworked and hugely intensified. These include the classic test scenarios, the audits and

"quality gates" that every single product and process must undergo on a continual basis.

The very best, consistent quality cannot, of course, be achieved through tests and audits

alone. It has to be developed, constructed and produced. The Quality function supports

the entire vehicle development process. A significant element is the Master Body Center-

a procedure used extensively by automakers at the forefront of quality. Here at the

master jig, the foundations are laid for qualitative excellence in vehicle series production

    - it is a central instrument of quality assurance.

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    16/21

The Master Body is a solid structure made from aluminum profile, onto which all the

bodyshell components with lamps, windows etc. are mounted. Technicians talk of a zero-

reference zone, in which all components can be perfectly matched to one another. All the

reference points on the Master Body are built to the highest precision in accordance with

the CAD data. This enables the dimensional accuracy of individual parts and their

interaction within the overall vehicle unit to be analyzed and perfected. This is where

prototype parts delivered by suppliers are installed and checked down to 0.1 millimeters

    - are the joints and gaps right, are the contours and radii perfect, do the surfaces meet

the bodyshell quality requirements for a Lamborghini? The trained eyes of specialists

serve as the benchmark just as much as the indomitable precision of the coordinate

measuring machines. If the prototype parts do not meet expectations, they must be

improved. Perfection does not come easy.

The Master Body Center is just hallenging than its high-volume counterpart - especially

for the employees. The assembly of the new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is

contained within just 11 stations. However, at each one of these stations is a team

working on a process interval of two hours - compared with just a few minutes in high-

volume manufacturing. This means that a wide range of work content is carried out at

each station. This motivates employees, because a job at Lamborghini is far more

challenging than classic production line work. Across all of the assembly stations at

Lamborghini, there is not one single robot in use.

State-of-the-art systems ensure quality of work

State-of-the-art systems guarantee that this complex work content is always completed

with the same degree of perfection. The parts for every process step and for each

vehicle are prepared in the correct order on special trolleys. A touchscreen information

system describes the individual process steps at each workstation, delivers the

information on the individual vehicle, contains checklists and saves them on completion.

The tools, too, are set up for defect prevention and precision operation - modern electric

screwdrivers, for instance, will only allow themselves to be loaded with tool bits and

used in accordance with the predefined order. The optimum torque for each individual

screw is pre-programmed and other key process steps stored in its memory. At the

"Lamborghini Lean Laboratory" in the heart of the assembly facility, the individual

processes of the Lamborghini production system are continuously monitored and

    developed, and the employees trained.

    Complete engine assembly by hand

The best-trained employees are the key pre-requisite for outstanding product quality.

The engine line is a further example - the high-performance power units are assembled

completely by hand at five stations. The total build time, including transmission, takes

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    17/21

around 20 hours. This is followed by an obligatory test bed run of one hour and 40

minutes - for every single one of the engines. And that is still not enough - the complete

vehicle then runs for just under one hour on a test rig to commission its systems and

check their functionality, after which every single sports car is then meticulously tested

on the road by one of Lamborghini's legendary test drivers over a distance of around 80

    kilometers.

    High technology and craftsmanship

But a super sports car with the unique character of a Lamborghini can only be created

from a combination of high-technology processes, an enormous level of experience and

passion on the part of all employees and the very best in classic craftsmanship. The

newly equipped saddlery is the best example of this. It is not just seats that are made

here, but complete interiors designed to meet the individual preferences of the

customer. The very first process steps call for intensive experience in working with

leather as a natural product - the tanned hides come from Europe's very best leather

suppliers. To guarantee perfect Lamborghini quality, however, they are thoroughly

checked once more for the tiniest defects, and irregularities that would go unnoticed by

an inexperienced eye are rejected. That every seam in the cockpit then has a perfect

line, that every single stitch is placed with precision regularity is possible only through

    years of training.

    Quality in customer care

"Our customers have realized a dream. We do everything we can to ensure that the

dream continues. The intense relationship with our customers is what makes the

    difference."

Alessandro Farmeschi, Head of After Sales

Lamborghini drivers have realized a dream. In order to ensure that the dream continues,

it takes more than the performance, reliability and functional stability of the super sports

car, but also the way that customers are treated personally. The basis for this

relationship at Lamborghini is the "one-to-one" principle. The dealer ny more complex,

however, is damage to the load-bearing structure of the super sports car. This is where

absolute specialist expertise is called for, because even the extent and significance of the

damage can only be evaluated clearly by absolute specialists. It is for this reason that

Lamborghini service centers do not carry out this kind of work themselves. The repair

competence rests with the Lamborghini Advanced Composite Research Center (ACRC).

The dealer only photographs and documents the damage, and sends his assessment to

the ACRC in Sant'Agata Bolognese, where specialists evaluate the material.

    Certificate guarantees 100 percent quality

If structural damage has occurred, one of the "flying doctors" boards the next airplane

with his tool box. In the workshop of the service center, the "flying doctor" checks over

the damage with the help of his NDI (Non-Destructive Inspection) equipment, to assess

whether, alongside visible damage, there are also hidden cracks in the carbon-fiber

structure. The subsequent repair is carried out in such a way as to reinstate the

structure to its full physical performance - as confirmed to the customer on completion

    with a certificate.

The idea of the "flying doctor" program arose from Lamborghini's cooperation with

Boeing. The aircraft company has been working with this kind of traveling specialist for

some time and has developed a system for perfect execution of carbon-fiber repair work

using extremely compact equipment. At Lamborghini, this system was further developed

for use in automotive applications and implemented for the benefit of the customer.

    Ad Personam

The highest level of individuality and exclusivity are the hallmark of ad personam. This

programme gives every Lamborghini client the possibility of creating their own unique

sports car, personifying their own style down to the last detail. With ad personam, every

Lamborghini becomes a unique car. etwork is structured in such a way as to enable

intensive one-to-one customer care. And every dealer also has a direct contact in

Sant'Agata. When it comes to major issues, the factory is always directly involved. These

personal relationships significantly accelerate the reaction and process times of any

enquiry or problem and enable an especially intense kind of customer care - something

that is incredibly important in the luxury market.

Brand identity that lives and breathes

When it comes to a brand with an identity as powerful as that of Lamborghini, it is

important and taken for granted that every employee lives and breathes this brand

identity personally. Therefore, every new employee at every dealer and service center

worldwide completes a training program at the home of the brand, on the hallowed

ground of the "Terra di Motori" around Sant'Agata Bolognese. Customers, too, have

plenty of opportunity at special events to experience and feel the unique spirit of the

brand - from training programs at the "Lamborghini Academy" to "Lamborghini Days" in

    China.

    "Flying doctors" travel the world

One particular aspect of Lamborghini customer care is the so-called "flying doctors".

Naturally, even a super sports car can meet with the occasional accident or misfortune,

which is why Lamborghini has taken precautions in the event that an accident occurs.

With a small team of specially selected and trained specialists, a damaged Lamborghini

is ensured of the very best care. These "flying doctors" support the Lamborghini service

center on-the-ground in evaluating the damage, and then undertake the repair work to

the carbon-fiber structure themselves. The Lamborghini promise - the repaired area is

100 percent to the same quality as the original part.

    Repair expertise on-the-ground

Lesser damage to the carbon-fiber external skin of one of these Lamborghini models is

generally unproblematic. Add-on parts are easy to replace. Considerabl Ad personam

offers a multitude of options via which to give both a car's interior and exterior its own

unique style. For this purpose, the fabric and colour designers from Sant' Agata have

created particularly prestigious equipment packages for the entire Lamborghini range

(for example, the leather packages and the carbon packages).

In addition to the above, almost all clients' further customisation requirements can be

met. It is as possible to have the car lacquered to match a client's colour sample as it is

to fulfil special wishes regarding the colour of the leather, Alcantara or thread used for

the seams. The only limits are those set by Lamborghini's own quality standards, with

which any modifications made must comply.

Functional quality of Lamborghini super sports cars

The appreciation of quality has changed significantly in recent years, with expectations

growing considerably. In this segment, too, mechanical reliability and functional stability

are expectations taken for granted by all customers - even a high-performance vehicle

like the Gallardo is expected to be fully suitable for everyday use. The functional stability

of a Lamborghini enables its owner to savor intense driving fun over many kilometers.

Many Lamborghini drivers are now enjoying very high annual mileage without a single

problem - a successful outcome of Lamborghini's determined quality management, from

development through testing to the selection of the best suppliers and zero-defect

    production.

Emotional quality is just as important

The first and often decisive level in the awareness of product quality is, however, of an

emotional nature - the perceived quality. You see a vehicle and credit it with a premium,

even luxurious status - without any immediate, conscious basis for doing so. Unique,

distinctive design and the use of the best, authentic materials are clear prerequisites for

this kind of perceived quality. But there are further critical criteria - the precision of form

and surface, the size and accuracy of joints and the way components fit together.

  • 7/29/2019 AQM FINAL

    20/21

Pleasant, exact haptic qualities are also part of it, as is an acoustic quality that conveys

solidity and precision. The classic toggle switches in the cockpit of every Gallardo are one

example of this - even operating the power windows becomes a sensual experience.

    Quality from tradition and innovation

This is where the two most important pillars of Lamborghini quality management are

most apparent - the tradition and the innovation. Representing tradition is the

phenomenal level of craftsmanship applied at Lamborghini to areas like the interior, to

the leather for tail. One small example - the 350 units of the limited-run Murcilago LP

670-4 Superveloce were painted in a total of 29 different colors, often as one-offs.

For Automobili Lamborghini, the fulfillment of these customer wishes is a matter of

course. The "Ad Personam" individualization program facilitates the creation of highly

individual one-offs. In fact, every third Lamborghini twelve-cylinder is individualized by

"Ad Personam". The result of that is, of course, a very high level of complexity in relation

to volume - a further challenge mastered by Lamborghini quality management.

    Quality as a consistent philosophy

According to the Automobili Lamborghini philosophy, the best possible quality can be

achieved only through a consistent and holistic approach. All areas of the company have

a contribution to make - not just design and development, purchasing and production,

but also personnel development, sales and customer service. At the end of the day, the

high quality objectives set for product and customer service can only be achieved with

highly trained and motivated employees. All of these processes are accompanied by the

company's Quality department. And its sheer size bears testament to the importance this

    issue carries for the company.

    Automobili Lamborghini Quality Policy

The Management of Automobili Lamborghini has issued a Quality Policy:

"We design and develop Italian, extreme, uncompromising cars whose purpose is to be a

constant source of pride for our customers. Satisfying the desires of every single

customer and meeting his/her expectations are cornerstones of our activity, providing a

benchmark for our products, achievements and development.

    Quality Failures :

    Examples:

1 : Lamborghini Gallardo recalled over fire risk

Faulty power steering l ines to blame

The Italian supercar stereotype refuses to die as the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration has announced the Lamborghini Gallardo will be recalled over a potential fire

    risk.

According to the agency, 2004-2006 Gallardos were equipped with high pressure steering

lines that could leak and spill fluid. This could potentially start a fire, turning your raging bull

    into a raging inferno.

The recall affects 1,491 vehicles and owners will be notified shortly. They can take their carinto the dealership where an updated power steering system will be installed free of charge.

    Source:National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

    2 : Lamborghini Recalling Murcilagos

Lamborghini is recalling 428 of its 20078 Murcilago and Murcilago Roadsters because

welds holding the fuel pump inside the gas tank may fail as the result of a poor weld and

    aggressive driving by owners.

If owners simply motored sedately the problem might not occur, according to a report the

automaker filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Lamborghini said

stress generated by the back and forth movement of gasoline inside the fuel tank during

lateral and longitudinal accelerations, accompanied by vertical vibration could cause a spot

    weld to fail.

Lamborghini told the agency that the failure could result in a slow fuel leak, although the

company has no report of accidents, fires or injuries. The automaker will replace the fuel

    tank.
