A Word From Pope Francis “Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter [to] the world. He understands human sufferings, and he has bent down to heal body and soul.”

—Homily, St. Peter’s Square, March 24, 2013

Why don’t Catholics study and prepare for the end times or rapture?

Q uite simply, we don’t prepare for the rapture because as Catholics we don’t believe in the rapture.

We do believe that there is a time when the world will end, but we have no idea when that day will come. Fundamentalist Christians believe that the world will end with a rapture where the good will be taken and the evil left. It is based on a misreading of Revelation 20 that speaks of an angel in the pit who will ravage the earth for 1,000 years. This is called amillennialism, and the Church has condemned this belief (CCC 676). The whole “left behind” series comes from this misreading.

Rather than being afraid of the end of the world, the Catholic Church teaches that the best way to prepare for the coming of Christ is by living the sacramental life of the Church: being baptized, celebrating the Eucharist and reconciliation consistently, being married or professing holy orders in the Church, and partaking in the anointing of the sick.

By doing these things we are participating in the fullness of the Church and life with Christ. This is the best way to prepare for Christ’s return. While we as Catholics do believe there will be a day when we will be gathered to Christ, we look forward to this day with anticipation and joy, not fear and anguish.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT HOLY FAMILY

April 2, 2017: Passion (Palm) Sunday ~ A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar The cruel death of Jesus tells us bad things can and do happen to very good people. It also tells us God is present during the suffering. When bad things happen, God does not abandon us.

AROUND THE PARISH AND COMMUNITY

CSA Update Thank you for your gifts to CSA 2017. Your generous support will fund essential diocesan ministries that support our seminarians, provide training for teachers and faith formation staff, as well as assist our brothers and sisters in need. To date 240 families, representing only a 25.2 % of our parish households, have contributed $94,093 or 82% of our parish goal. Please keep in mind that we are asking for 100% participation in this pledged drive whether you give or not, please turn in your CSA pledge card. Also any amount raised over our goal is returned to the parish. So if you have not responded yet, please do so today! Please continue to pray for the success of this important effort.

Council of Catholic Women - Opportunities for spiritual growth. Grand Rapids Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is promoting the State Convention for Council of Catholic Women to be held April 21-22, 2017. (nonmembers welcome) The theme is: Lead Me Lord, Renew My Strength; to be held in the Holiday Inn, Ann Arbor. Our keynote speakers will be: Fr. John Riccardo (Pastor of Our Lady Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth via satellite), Fr. Patrick Gonyeau (specializes in Evangelization), Bill Richart (multi-media on Divine Mercy), Katie O’Mara (retired Channel 5 co-anchor) and Spiritual Advisor, Fr. Patrick Maher. There will be two (2) bishops that will concelebrate our liturgy—Bishop Boyea of Lansing and Bishop Cistone of Saginaw. Registration forms are on the Ministry cart.

April Faith Formation Classes • Elementary Faith Formation Classes resume on April 10 and will end on April 24 and 26. • Early Childhood has no class on Easter Sunday, April 16 but will have classes on April 23 and 30.

First Communion Masses Come and celebrate with all of our first Communicants and their families at Masses on Saturday, April 22 at 5pm and Sunday, April 23 at 11am. We have 39 children who will join us at the Table of the Lord. What a wonderful blessing to celebrate!

Got Pardon? On Divine Mercy Sunday, Jesus offers eternal pardon for all the sins we’ve committed up to this point in our lives!!! Yes! Though sins are forgiven in sacramental Confession, we are still held accountable for their consequences: We need to ‘pay the price’, or make reparation for our offenses. How? Through prayer, Works of Mercy, charity, fasting and almsgiving in this life, or through purification in Purgatory in the next. Jesus so greatly desires to show us the depths of His Mercy that He promises to ‘cancel all debt due to sin’ for all who observe the Feast of the Divine Mercy. This Feast falls each year on the Sunday that follows Easter Sunday: April 23 this year. Be sure to stop by the Ministry Cart to pick up more information on how to personally prepare for the Feast of Divine Mercy, and plan to join us on Sunday, April 23 at 2:30 PM in the church tocelebrate this beautiful feast!

No 9 AM Mass, and no Eucharistic Adoration on Holy Thursday

All are welcome to visit the chapel following the 7 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Come stay awake and keep vigil with Our Lord. Hours of visitation: following Mass until 11:00 PM.

“Catholic Build” - a Habitat for Humanity Project Holy Family is supporting the Catholic United Build Project 2017. We will be coming together with other catholic churches and organizations to help build a Habitat home for four families on the corner of Davis and 4th Street (across from the Basilica of St. Adalbert). There are many ways you can help from time on the job site, to donation of materials or services from businesses, painting trim before installation, hospitality opportunities and to prayers for safety and good weather. The weekends we will need volunteers are June 3, June 24 and July 15. You can find more information on the project on the board in the Ministry Hallway or on our website - www.holyfamilycaledonia.org

Adult Caregiver Support We know that the role of caregiver to those whose health is a struggle can be taxing physically and emotionally, and also cause questions on spirituality, human suffering, dignity, and other matters. Several parishioners have expressed an interest in coming together at Holy Family to support one another. This would be for adults who are caring for their aging parents or elderly loved ones. This group would not start out with a speaker or a set agenda necessarily, but rather would have parishioners gather to share a little bit of their journey, find support in one another's common realities, and spend some time in prayer. Refreshments would likely be provided as well! If you would be interested in support like this, please contact Christine Shafer in the Parish Office to be put on a contact list to be kept informed as this develops and to determine the need for such a support system. We can look to many Saints who have cared for the sick, dying and elderly, we can look to scripture for wisdom and support, and we can look to one another for the same. Please pass this along to anyone you think could benefit, as well. [email protected].

Auction Update Habitat for Humanity Auction: We are excited for the first ever Holy Family Parish Auction that will benefit

Habitat for Humanity. For those that have never attended an auction here's a run down of the evening activities. There will be over 150 items for you to bid on in the silent auction at the beginning of the evening. During that time you will be able to purchase 50/50 raffle tickets, participate in other raffles that have great prizes attached to them and of course feast on a wonderful meal. After the silent auction boards are closed we have exciting entertainment from an electric violin group, NuClassica. A special musical event that we know you'll enjoy. Then to end the evening we will be having a LIVE auction with special dinners to bid on, vacation at a cottage and golf just to name a few. There is still time to donate a NEW item to the auction to help support this worthy cause. Make sure and return your RSVP as soon as possible. This is an adult only (18yr+) evening. If you have not received your invitations in the mail and would like to attend please contact the parish office. We are hoping for a sold out event!

Hurt Plaguing Your Marriage? Did you know that according to the State of Michigan website there were 29,478 divorces in the state of Michigan in the year 2015? Of these 4,575 of those were right here in the west Michigan area. Do you feel lost, alone or bored in your marriage? Are you frustrated, hurt or angry with your spouse? Are you constantly fighting? Or, do you simply shut down? Have you thought about separation or divorce? Does talking only make it worse?

Rediscover healing and love and find hope by attending Retrouvaille (pronounced re-tro-v-eye). The program offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage relationship. The next Retrouvaille weekend is June 9-11, 2017. Space is limited, please reserve your spot today. Catholic Tuition Assistance Through generous donations and fund growth, Holy Family’s Futures Foundation provides tuition support for those attending Catholic schools. This is over and above the support for parishioner vs. non-parishioner tuition rates.

The Foundation is registered with FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment, utilizing their programs and expertise to manage the application and distribution process.

Parents interested in applying to the Foundation for assistance with tuition for the 2017/2018 school year should complete an application on-line at www.factsmgt.com.

The deadline for applications submitted on-line is April 28, 2017. Award decisions will be announced no later than May 19, 2017. Contact Jim Beauchamp, parish Business Manager, if you have questions; [email protected] or 616-891-9259 ext. 236.

Ride to Mass Needed If you would be able to provide a ride from the Wyoming area to our Sunday 9am Mass for an adult parishioner with special needs on an occasional basis, and potentially in the future a regular basis, please contact Christine Shafer in the parish office. Two people willing to do this would be wonderful. Great blessings will come with this act of love and service, and giving the opportunity to be with their parish community.

Strengthen In Faith - Faith Buddies Needed The diocesan conference for parents/families with children and adults with special needs is coming in June, “Strengthened In Faith”. Faith Buddies are needed to assist with the children and adults with disabilities. The Faith Buddies take the participants to different activity rooms, interacting with them at their interest level and “buddy” with them for the afternoon. While the parents are learning and meeting, the children (both children and adults) with disabilities and their siblings, play for the afternoon in a variety of things like puppets, sensory room, occupational therapy, play therapy, music therapy, quiet room, therapy dogs, large motor room, craft and art projects, and more! Faith Buddies are needed to accompany participants to these activities. It has been a very fun time for Faith Buddies. If you enjoy persons with special needs and would like to give the parents of our Church this time of support, prayer and respite, contact Christine Shafer to learn more and possibly sign up to help! If you would like to be involved in another way like with the dinner, snacks, make a donation of snacks or monetary, or have a gift of an activity to offer, please contact Christine. [email protected]

Knights of Columbus The Knights of Columbus are celebrating their Past Grand Knights Dinner (with all Council Members and their spouse). This will be on Saturday April 29th after 5 PM Mass in Holy Family Center. Preferred RSVP to [email protected] by Wednesday April 19th, otherwise contact David Kempisty at 616-485-5391

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month In the Diocese of Grand Rapids, we are committed to protecting children and adults from harm. The Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People is the main document we follow in directing our work.

April is recognized in the United States as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month-long observance reminds us all of our collective responsibility to make positive choices that will impact the safety and well-being of our children. As we continue our efforts to prevent child abuse, let us give thanks for the many members of our community that have come together on this mission to put a stop to abuse and create positive, healthy environments for all children.
