Chasing Paper: Team WUSY/Chattanooga raises an impressive $503,647 during their St. Jude radiothon. Pictured (holding signs, l-r) are the station’s Justin Cole, Mo Turner Wagner, Daniel Wyatt, Nichole Hartman, Styckman, Devon and Cowboy Kyle with fellow staffers and volunteers.

Wholly Toledo: Shores Steps Down Gas sold for $1.10 a gallon and cell phones weighed 11 pounds when Gary Shores was tapped to lead WKKO/Toledo as PD. Roughly 12,000 music logs later, the Country radio veteran is stepping away from those responsibilities. His focus moving

Reba was very much a surprise guest as she had to be in New York very early the next morning to announce the ACM nominees on CBS This Morning. Also on hand were Country industry colleagues who offered their own insights into Spalding’s life, career and personality. Half roast, half lighthearted recollections were delivered by artist manager Stan Moress, Sony/Nashville’s Randy Goodman, FBMM’s Mary Ann McCready, WMN’s John Esposito and Live Nation’s Brian O’Connell. “I feel like I birthed a baby,” said Moress, who first brought Spalding to Nashville to help with his artist roster. “I met Clarence in Kentucky where I watched him work with a very difficult promoter and knew I had to find a way to get him to Nashville. He helped make Nashville what it is today. I couldn’t be prouder of this guy.” Goodman, who noted his comments might sound a bit like psycho-analysis, said, “Clarence is one of the most fascinating and complex people I’ve ever met. For all his eccentricities, I’ve come to see him as one of the most steadfast, trustworthy and truthful people I have ever known. If a moral person speaks the truth no matter the consequences or circumstances, then Clarence comes as close to that idea as people in the pulpit. You tell the truth. Isn’t that what makes you better?” Aldean presented the award. “Clarence not only changed my life but my family’s lives,” he said. “If not for him, I don’t know what I’d be doing. I’d probably still be playing bars in Macon.” Spalding was surprised by the tribute, having been lured to the Opry House under false pretenses. “I’m gonna be brief because I’m sick of hearing about myself,” he began. “Normally I’m the guy in the back making fun of the guy up here, saying, ‘He’s not all that.’ And, ‘That’s bullshit.’ Tonight, I found myself saying that about me a lot. “I am honored to be up here and really appreciate the nice things people said about me. Finding out I’m a living legend is a big surprise to me. I thought I was doing an interview about the Opry, and I’m pissed. I had a great speech. But I should have known something was up. Usually when I pull in I’m told I can park anywhere in the gravel lot. When I pulled in tonight, the guard said I could park right there in the front. So I went from the gravel lot to a living legend in one fell swoop.” More from the night below. –Lon Helton

Cumulus VP/Country Formats Charlie Cook discusses his most influential music:1. Bob Seger: I used to see him play The Hideout in East Detroit when I was in high school. It was Bob Seger and The Last Heard. Interestingly, that first album East Side Story was on Hideout Records so I’m sure the club owner was a backer of some sort. I met Bob at the Grammys a few years ago and told him when I was first introduced to his music.

He was surprised that there were any of us still around. 2. Steely Dan: I love everything about the intricacies of their music. 3. Tears For Fears: Again, their music is layered and deep. I saw them at Bridgestone Arena and they blew me away. 4. Rod Stewart opening for Three Dog Night at Olympia in Detroit: It was my first concert and my car was broken into that night. The cops laughed at me for parking where I did – like within the city limits. I loved the harmonies of Three Dog Night. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Sturgill Simpson. I know I am supposed to listen to him. He is a huge act, sells out six shows at The Ryman in a blink. But I am a hit-oriented listener and I need a sing-along hook. I do not believe he is about that. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I do not get Bruce Springsteen. I went to a show once and was bored in 15 minutes. Again, because I don’t know much of his music, I am not invested. I understand the religious experience he fulfills for people from New York and New Jersey. I am another religion. I could not sit through an opera for a million dollars. Well, for a million dollars I could. All that wailing. Yuck. I really hate music that does not rhyme lyrically. It messes with my head. Heavy Metal – yuck. Might be why I do like Rap. • An album you listened to incessantly: Anita Baker’s Rapture. I could not get enough of that CD. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I like old AC music and Smooth Jazz: Phil Collins, Lionel Richie, Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins, ELO, Boney James, Gerald Albright, Sade and Lindsey Webster.

•“Clarence once told us he never had any other artists like us. When we said ‘thanks,’ he said, ‘I didn’t mean that in a good way. I don’t have any artists who blow up my phone the way you guys do.’” – Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus • “You stick up for us and fight for us and there’s nothing more an artist could want from a manager.” –Terri Clark •“No one called him Clarence back then; he was known as Wolf. He was the best road manager, period. He was perfect. And he went on to be perfect as a manager.” – Exile’s Sonny LeMaire • “Clarence understood my dreams and visions and helped me even before he was my manager.” – Darius Rucker •“There’s no BS with Clarence. Don’t go to him to be coddled. Go to him for straightforward advice and pitch him only with the facts.” –John Esposito •“Clarence, you gotta be miserable hearing a bunch of people saying nice things about you. But you’re our guy. You’ve always been our guy. Thank you for being our guy.” – Brian O’Connell

Chart Chat Congrats to Thomas Rhett, Chris Palm-er, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team for securing this week’s No. 1 with “Mar-ry Me.” The song is the third chart-topper from Life Changes. Writers are Shane McAnally, Ashley Gorley, Jesse Frasure and Rhett. And kudos to Stacy Blythe and the Big Loud reps on landing 60 adds for Jake Ow-en’s “I Was Jack (You Were Diane),” topping this week’s board.

Curb’s Rodney Atkins puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WMIK-AM/Middlesboro, KY and WIVK/Knoxville. The first time I heard myself on the radio was on WOKI/Knoxville. I was opening for George Jones in ‘92. They let me play a few songs live and recorded it to play later. When I got back in my truck, they played it and I was able to hear myself. I

thought, “That’s what I sound like? I’m in trouble!” When Curb first sent me on radio tour, I didn’t have a single out. I thank God for those days now, that I got to meet folks in Country radio. I’ll never forget when I was in Harrisburg, PA and Shelly Easton was the PD. She pulled me off to the side and said, “I don’t know what your first single should be, but whatever you do, don’t quit.” This was in ‘96 and it was 2006 before we had a No. 1 song. There were so many people back then who encouraged me and made me believe in myself when I didn’t. Even back in ‘94, I remember driving across Tennessee and Kentucky, visiting radio stations. What’s crazy is, they let me come in! And they were always so welcoming. ‘IVK let me come in back when I didn’t even have a record label. They made me feel like family. My favorite people to travel with are my wife Rose, our new baby, Ryder, and my son Elijah. Ryder likes the bus because it shakes and rattles. In the summertime, Eli, who’s 16, comes out with us and makes some summer money selling merch. Every time I’m at a truck stop I pick up a hat. Truck stops have the best ball caps. My new music is country. It’s got some grit. It’s a lot about where I’m at and where I’m going. It’s not a whole lot about where I was. My last impulse buy was a flannel hoodie. We went up north and I underestimated how cold it still was in Pennsylvania. I wish I’d written Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” It’s one of the best story songs of all time, if not the best. My least favorite interview question is, “Tell us about your divorce.” (laughs) I’d love to be stuck in any city where there’s a good beach.

Shores says a perfect mix of similarities and differences was the key to their success. “We were both radio geeks and both had a programmer’s mindset, so we understood how to get the job done,” he says. “But we were different people who had grown up in different parts of the country. I was a car guy, for example, and he was a hockey guy. He didn’t know anything about cars and I still don’t know shit about hockey. The chemistry was kind of magical and was there from the beginning.” Phase Forward: A lot will be different moving forward, of course, and not just because of Steele’s absence. Shores, 66, is craving more time for himself. “I’d talked with management even before we knew Harvey was as sick as he was,” Shores says of the decision to relinquish programming responsibilities. “I sound like a broken record, but I do my 70-80 hours every week. I don’t complain because it’s led to a lot of success, but it’s time. My wife is retired now and we want to spend more time together traveling and doing stuff with the kids, who are scattered all over the country.”

While it might seem hard to give up control after so many years at the helm, Shores isn’t worried about it. “I don’t have a problem with that at all,” he says. “The radio station is certainly not broken. We’ve been No. 1 for over 20 years. So as far as taking direction, I don’t see a lot of changes. I’m sure some-body is going to want to put their own fingerprint on the station and they may have ideas that can improve it. That’s great and I would obviously encourage that.” Given the morning show’s history as a two-person operation, one of those ideas could be a co-host. And some have even suggested Steele’s daughter Kara as the perfect candidate. “She’s amazing,” Shores admits. “She works for Life Connection of Ohio, which is the organ procurement organization that helped Harvey get his liver transplants 20 years ago. I do plan to have her in from time to time to give updates on the charity fund that was set up when Harvey died. He helped a lot of people through his charity work over the years and we plan to return the favor by promoting that moving forward.” As for a new permanent co-host, “We haven’t gotten that far yet,” Shores says. “We’re going to crawl before we walk and see how the numbers shake out.” Shores is looking forward to some well-deserved downtime in any event. “Now comes the fun part,” he muses. “I’m going to let somebody else do all the busy work. I’ll be doing what got me into this business in the first place.” Reach Shores here. Donate to the Harvey J. Steele Memorial Fund through the Toledo Community Foundation here. –CA Staff
