“My Lord and My God” John 20:19-31
Here we are one week after Easter. How has this week been for you? Is the excitement of Easter still in the air or has it begun to fade? Has it vanished all together? Our text from John gives us a glimpse back to Easter Day to the splendid revelation of God's glory of Christ's resurrection. The disciples are huddled in fear behind a locked door Jesus appears to them, and when he does he not only reveals his resurrection, he also breathes an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon them. Thomas was absent from the other disciples. The others are sharing the wonderful news with him "We have seen the Lord!" (John 20:25) But what proof do they bring? They bring only their words. Thomas must have been from the Missouri section of the Holy Land "The Show Me State". The stage is set: Ten disciples who "know" and wait anxiously; one disciple who doubts, who only has the words of the others to go by. Perhaps you are just like Thomas, wishing you could receive a firsthand revelation. Fortunately for Thomas and for us, that is not the end of the text. The text now turns to a wonderful message of grace. And Jesus says "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:29) What a powerful blessing. The very best of news is this God meets us where we are. Remember God's promise "Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be open unto you." (Matthew 7:7 Luke 11:9)
Questions: 1. How was your week after Easter? 2. What was it like for the disciples?
Thomas? 3. What was they good news they received?
