AAA Word From the Pastor

We're making our way towards our parish goal for the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA).

Thank you to the 81 generous parishioners for helping us reach 71% of our goal with their pledges

and/or gifts. I mailed my pledge about two weeks ago. There's still time to join me and the other 81

parishioners to help meet our goal. If you haven't as yet responded, please consider doing so in the

near future. Please remember that your gift to the CMA helps to support a variety of diocesan minis-

tries which serves the people on Long Island and you also help the parish reach its goal at which time

the parish will receive a rebate of 20% to help with parish expenses. You can use the tear off in this

bulletin or the card you received from the Diocese.

As I reported last weekend, on June 27, 2018, I will complete my first term of six years as pastor of

Holy Name of Jesus. For me, the time has flown by - I hope you feel the same way! We've accom-

plished much together and I'm grateful for your support. Bishop Barres granted my request to contin-

ue as Pastor of HNJ until such time as I think it best for me to retire. I hope you support my decision

and are happy with Bishop Barres' decision.

Did you get to view the new video series "Everyday Heroes" produced by the Knights of Columbus

(the K of C) ? Episode 1 is the story of Joseph Mario Reali after whom our Council is named. I invite

and encourage all parishioners to view this Video at kofceverydayheroes.org. Watch the video and

you'll appreciate why this Council bears his name. I encourage you to invite your children and/or

grandchildren to view the video with you. More information elsewhere in this bulletin.

This weekend, members from St. Francis Guild are selling raffle chances after each of the Masses to

benefit St Francis Hospital.

Wednesday, May 2, there will be a meeting of the FUNdraising Committee at 7:30 PM in the li-

brary.

Sunday, May 13th is Mother's Day, the one day we set aside to thank our mothers for their love. If

you wish to enroll your mother, grandmother, sister, aunt or someone in the Novena, please complete

one of the enrollment envelopes available in the Church or return the Mother's Day envelope you re-

ceived in the mail. In addition to the enrollment envelopes, there are Spiritual Bouquet Mass Cards

available for presentation to the person(s) you enrolled in the Novena.

Upcoming Events and/or Collections

Saturday, May 5 - 5:15 PM Mass - All parishioners are invited to celebrate with one of our parish-

ioners as she receives her First Holy Communion.

May 5-6: Second Collection to help fund Tomorrow's Hope Foundation which provides scholarships

students seeking a Catholic education in one of the diocesan schools.

FOCUS: As we prepare to hear God’s word today, we

recall our sins and shortcomings, asking our loving

God to forgive our sins and bring us to everlasting

life. In the first reading, Paul goes to Jerusalem, meets the apostles, and is welcomed as a preacher of the Gospel. In the second reading, John assures us that God is attentive to those who keep his commandments. In the Gospel, God is the vine grower, Jesus is the vine, and the

followers of Jesus are the branches. All are intimately connected for the purpose of producing good fruit. Published by Franciscan Media

The Joseph Mario Reali Knights of Columbus Council is pleased to announce we have been selected to

be a part of an online video series called

"Everyday Heroes". Episode 1 is about our council's name bearer Joseph Mario Reali.

I often ask myself why this worldwide organization was so inspired by the actions of a young man and how

his story has touched the lives of so many? As you will see in the video, Joe was an ordinary man, had a

large group of friends whom he loved to hang out with, was involved in school sports, and lived like any

other kid in their late teens or early twenties. What made him stand out though and what separated him from

being “ordinary” was his deep faith.

To sum it up, Joe lived the two greatest commandments, to love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and

to love your neighbor as yourself. He was constantly inviting his friends, regardless of their background, to

come to church. He went out of his way to help anyone he knew who was in need, even when it required

sacrifice. First and foremost, he made sure he lived and practiced his Catholic faith and that included fre-

quently receiving the sacraments, especially on Sundays. Where was it that he practiced his faith? Right

here at Holy Name of Jesus in Woodbury.

I encourage and invite all of you to please go on the Knights of Columbus website kofceverydayheros.org to

see the video. More importantly, invite others to see it as well. If you are reading this bulletin, you probably

are pretty faithful already. Please encourage anyone who has fallen away or is not practicing their Catholic

faith, especially any young person, to take a look at a normal everyday young man, who would not be who

he was without the Catholic faith. Let them know they will always have a home and a warm welcome at

Holy Name of Jesus and how much we would love for them to join our parish family, where we share our

faith together.

If any Catholic man over the age of 18 is interested in joining our Knights of Columbus Council, please feel

free to email me at [email protected] or call 516-364-7119.

Thank you, and as we Knights say "Vivat Jesus!"

P.S. Please save the date, Saturday, July 14th, 2018 for a 5:15 Family Mass followed by a Family Barbe-

que on the Holy Name of Jesus Church grounds. It will include a delicious barbeque with games and prizes

for adults and children. We hope everyone will be able to join us for a fun family evening. Details will fol-

low as we get closer to the event.

resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law

by President Harry S. Truman. The National Day of Prayer

exists to mobilize unified, public prayer for America.

On Thursday, May 3rd

the 9:00am mass will be offered for our Nation.

Please join us!
