“May the Holy Spirit lead us on a true journey of conversion, so that we can rediscover the
gift of God’s word, be purified of the sin that blinds us, and serve Christ present in our brothers and sisters in need.” - Pope Francis
Almsgiving in Lent
During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms.
Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need - whether it is for their material,
emotional or spiritual needs.
And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days, please remember
those of our neighbors who are hungry and consider sharing your gifts with them.
One good way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which
supports programs that help feed people in our community each year through both Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach Centers.
For more information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal, please visit CatholicMinis-
triesAppeal.org or call 516-678-5800 ext. 296.

AAA Word From the Pastor A friendly reminder that the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. This Lenten practice and sacrifice calls all Catholics 14 and older to abstain from eating meat. The Church also teaches that we should be performing some additional Lenten practices such as praying the Stations of the Cross, reading and pray-ing of the Scriptures, spending time with the Lord in Church before the Blessed Sacrament, possibly at-tending Mass on some weekdays, and praying the rosary etc. We are also called to seriously think about celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance/Confession). Last Saturday, 91 parishioners enjoyed the corned beef and cabbage dinner cooked by Deacon Chris along with the delicious St. Joseph's pastry. Special thanks to the FUNdraising Committee for organizing and sponsoring the dinner in honor of St. Patrick and St. Joseph, and also to Deacon Chris for cooking and preparing the dinner. Any thank you to the parishioners who supported the dinner celebration. The parish hall was nicely decorated with symbols of St. Patrick and St. Joseph along with a shrine honoring these two saints. In addition, there was a pot of gold filled with tempting gold covered chocolate coins and cookies. Don't forget to take home a leaf from one of the baskets by the small barren trees (one in front of the altar and the other by the Blessed Mother altar) if you haven't done so to date. The tress are bare but hopeful-ly by Easter Sunday they will be in full blossom with the leaves you return once you complete your Lenten penance/practice. The idea is to take home a leaf, anonymously write down your penance and return it to the basket BEFORE Easter Sunday. The spiritual Life Committee will hang to leaves on the trees. The 2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is progressing nicely. Thank you to those who have given a gift and/or made a pledge. If you have not responded, I hope you will do so in the near future. Please re-member that YOUR gift helps someone on Long Island seeking some assistance from the Church through one of the Diocesan ministries. There is no organization, body or group on Long Island who provides the breadth and depth of spiritual and social services to so many individuals and fami-lies as does the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Your gift and/or pledge can be given outright or paid over the next ten months, and please remember that NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL AND EVERY GIFT is used specifically for one of the diocesan ministries. If you have a particular ministry close to your heart, you can designate your pledge/gift specifically for that ministry. Please see the CMA info and response form elsewhere in this bulletin. The Bishops of the New York State Catholic Conference of Bishop call your attention to the following and
ask for your support: In response to concerns that have been raised over the education provided at a
small number of Jewish schools, the NYS Education Department is enforcing oversight of all nonpublic
schools – including Catholic schools that meet and exceed the state’s academic standards. Catholic
schools can easily demonstrate their academic success, are independently accredited, and are approved
to operate by the Board of Regents. This new process will unfairly require local public school districts,
who are competitors with our schools, to review our schools and then require local public school boards
to vote on whether a Catholic school in their area can continue to operate (except in NYC where the pub-
lic school district Chancellor will make the determination). Please urge your legislators to reject this plan
and to support existing methods for the state to approve the operation of Catholic schools, which have
provided superior educational opportunities for New York families for generations. In response to a pa-
rishioner from HNJ, a representative from the State Assembly voiced his opposition to this new policy
stating: "... I share your concerns that public school boards cannot objectively assess the educational
mission and curriculum in private and religious schools without interfering with every parent's right to edu-
cate their children in an environment that reflects their priorities and values."

FOCUS: Loving God, you made a covenant with our
ancestors, Abraham and Sarah, and invite us to share
in their inheritance. Let us see in this covenant your
will for us. Grant us the grace to listen and to see
only you in every person whom we meet. In the first reading, God gives Abraham the assurance of faith he needs. His descendants will enjoy the promised land. In
the second reading, Paul calls us citizens of heaven. He is ready to help us understand what that means. In the
Gospel, Jesus is transfigured while a heavenly voice declares, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” Published by Franciscan Media
