PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT MEETINGS

It was very pleasing to see parents meeting with teachers on Tuesday afternoon/evening to discuss strategies for improving their child’s learning. Not all parents were able to make it to the scheduled time and I encourage parents who were unable to attend to contact the school to make alternative arrangements. I am aware of some parents who have arranged telephone interviews. The old TEAM acronym (together, everyone achieves more) definitely applies to the partnership between student, teacher and parent – everyone working together will optimise the outcomes.

ANZAC DAY Congratulations and thanks go to our students involved in the ANZAC Day commemoration at Chinkapook on Monday. Geordi Saunders, Kale Taylor and Chloe Plant were the flag attendants, Emma Templeton delivered the Opening Address, Larni Cleeland recited the ANZAC Requiem and Daniel Pohlner read The Ode. There was a very large crowd in attendance and the event was voted a great success. I am sure that all who were involved in the planning and execution of the commemoration were well rewarded by its success. SKILLS FOR THE 21

st CENTURY

A recent report, released by the Foundation for Young Australians reveals some significant trends. These include:

A rise in demand for enterprise skills.

An increase in wages for young job-seekers with enterprise skills. Enterprise skills are transferable skills that are required in many jobs (unlike technical skills that tend to be specific to a particular job). They include Problem solving, Creativity, Communications, Teamwork, Financial literacy, Digital literacy, Critical thinking and Presentation skills. The following graph shows the growth in occupations in Australia over the past 25 years – clearly there is a shift in the types of jobs and, therefore, the types of skills needed.

Education today needs to cater for the increasing demand for enterprise skills.

CLEAN-UP – Part TWO Does anyone know of someone who might like some work assisting with the Technology Room clean-up? If so, please contact the school. After yet another delay, the best estimate for this being done is the week beginning on May 23.

Great Victorian Bike Ride

This year the school is looking to change the Pedal Prix program to instead completing the Great Victorian Bike Ride. This caters specifically for schools and provides all meals, accommodation and support. The route this year is Grampians to the Coast, starting at Halls Gap and finishing in Geelong. The school is only looking at the 3 or 5 day options, which is the later stages of the trip. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet other students, see fantastic scenery and challenge themselves physically and mentally.

The trip is open to all students in years 9,10 and 11. Students wanting to attend will need to commit to training and some fundraising.

Notes were sent home at the end of last term asking for expressions of interest. These need to be returned as soon as possible. Parents are also welcome. Please contact me for further details.

Primary News

It’s been a hive of activity in the Prep/1 space as we discover all about our new theme of Nursery Rhymes. These old time favourites

have created quite a bit of excitement. So far we have read and written about Humpty Dumpty and Baa Baa Black Sheep. We have

also been continuing our hard work with letter formation and placement on the lines. With the help of iPads and writing letters in

many different places we have slowly become neater with our writing. We can’t wait until assembly to show everyone how neat our

writing is.

During Maths we have been doing lots of counting and Place Value activities and games. There have been many bundles of 10

drawn and made from all sorts of equipment. We have also been investigating how many bundles of 10 we need to make 100.

We wont say too much more about what’s been happening as we have assembly next week and want to keep some surprises!

Upcoming events and reminders.

We will again be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This year students do not need permission to participate, only to

have their names listed on the honour roll when they meet the challenge. The permission form for this is attached to Link Up. It

would be great if this could be returned as soon as possible.

Next week is a busy week.

Mother’s Day stall. This will be running Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to allow students to purchase something for Mother’s Day.

Wednesday 4th May: Cross Country.

Friday 6th May Assembly in the Prep/1 space at 10.00am followed by the Mother’s Day Morning tea. Invitations with further

information will be sent home for the morning tea tomorrow. Please keep an eye out for these.

VCE PHYSICAL EDUCATION ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

Last Thursday VCE Physical Education students participated in a hands on learning experience in Swan Hill which related directly to the VCE course being

studied. First stop was Central Mallee Osteopathy where students had the opportunity to run on a treadmill and analyse running technique and also perform

major exercises such as squats, analyse each other and discuss methods to

improve or correct technique. Students also learnt about correct stretching and warm ups, recovery and cool down, effective nutrition before, during and after

exercise, body movement and designing and performing effective training programs. Louise and Nick had an extensive knowledge and the information they

provided was extremely valuable.

After the conclusion of that session we walked to Mallee Physio to participate in a

Healthy Mates fitness session followed by a recovery session in the hydrotherapy

pools. The temperature inside the centre was 32' resulting in some heavy sweating and fluid losses up to 1kg in some participants. Everyone was very

eager to then cool off in the pools. The recovery session involved alternating between an ice bath and hot spa. Although it took some time to adjust to the ice

bath most participants were able to fully submerge by the end of the session.

The trip concluded with a quick tour around the town to look at active transport strategies and what the town offers in terms of promoting healthy living. We

were able to spot designated bike paths along some major streets, walking paths, large active play playgrounds and the outdoor fitness equipment along the

riverbank.

This trip was made possible by CAP funding and it is great to be able to utilise

businesses in our local area rather than having to travel large distances. Thank

you to Sarah Plant for her assistance and to the students for embracing the sessions and being prepared to enhance their learning.

Secondary Sport

Students are reminded that they need a whistle for all Sport classes. Sport class every Thursday, lesson 3 and 4.

Horse Paddock Fencing

During the recent school holidays Lionel Price drove his tractor to the school to put in corner strainer posts for the new horse paddock behind the Ag/Hort area.

Mr Riches trimmed some trees and a number of students have helped Mrs Braid put up the fences. All that remains is to wire up the electrics, and connect up the water to the stock trough, and we'll be ready to bring some ponies to the school.

Mr Price also removed some poles in the shade cloth area in preparation for fencing a covered horse training area. Steel has been donated for this by Presto Rollforming. Liz Braid
