Houseboat Trip 16-20 March 2020

Monday 16th March at 10am we left home for my sister’s place in Parafield Gardens. After we turned onto Salisbury Hwy I could hear a clicking sound coming from one of my tyres. At my sister’s I checked and found a long Tech Screw in one of them in the thickest part of the tread. I thought it might be OK and began unscrewing it but it leaked. While my sister finished loading her car we took off for Cluse Bros Tyres, 45 mins and $30 later all was fixed so we headed for Murray Bridge. We met everybody at the new shopping centre about an hour late to do our predermined list of who was supplying what. At 3pm we loaded our stuff onto the boat (The Dove) at the River Glen Marina about 7-8 kms from Murray Bridge. After about an hour of “Tuition” and familiarization we headed back to Mur-ray Bridge about 1-1/2 hours for the night and pub meal with my nephew and his wife. Tuesday we left about 9am heading upstream towards Mannum. Beautiful day with very little river traf-fic at all. I hadn’t travelled this part of the river so stayed outside in the warm sunshine and admired the sights. I was also looking for mileage markers so we could find a place to stop for lunch. Because you can’t pull up just anywhere anymore, the river charts are marked where you can, and sometimes it’s al-ready crowded. We came across a salvage barge who had been removing a very old houseboat that was derelict and sunk. It was a bit over loaded and low in the water so we cruised past and headed for a boat ramp and area where we could stop for lunch. The wind had come up a bit so we watched a smaller boat attempt to tie up at our stop, but after five attempts, one of which hit a jetty, they left. We had three attempts and got it right then tied up. The salvage barge pulled into the boat ramp and with the on board crane unloaded the rusty remnants onto the already large pile of stuff they had. Later a large low loader came to load all of the salvage and take it away. After we’d eaten we couldn’t hit the road so we hit the river for Mannum. There was still a head wind but not too bad but we weren’t in a hurry so it didn’t matter. It was a pleasant cruise into Mannum Club (pub) for the night. We strolled up and down the Main Street remembering the 1956 flood and where the water came up to the bottom of the pub, not far from the ferry, had water up to the balcony for quite a while. After dinner we adjourned to the top deck for a few frothies, fizzies and other assorted stuff and some banter with the next door boat people. Wednesday we hit the river again about 10am and had to wait for the go ahead from two ferries before crossing their cables. Another nice day for cruising and seeing how much the area and the number of groups of shacks had changed. I use the word “shacks” very loosely, as a lot of them probably cost more than the owner’s main house. We found a really nice beach so pulled in, tied up had a bit of a break and lunch. After a couple hours we backed out and headed off again. More unfamiliar river but it was very nice checking it out. We thought our boat was quite big but some we saw were bigger and betterer than ours, one was big and bright orange and black. Keeping an eye on mileage markers, when we got to 170kms we thought we’d turn back as we had to disembark by 10am on Friday. We re-turned to our lunch stop, tied up and put the kayak in the water and we all piddled, or was that paddled around until we had a BBQ dinner then a few (more) drinks to end the day. Thursday about 10am we headed back towards Mannum. The forecast said we were going to cop some wind, it wasn’t wrong. By lunchtime it was quite strong and in the distance there was a massive red dust cloud heading our way. We shut the windows and doors and everyone came inside. Ap-proaching Mannum we couldn’t see the town or the ferries so slowed right down until the ferries let us pass, then we tied up carefully behind the middle pub. It was a bit sheltered so we stayed a couple hours until the worst was over. We visited the supermarket then had lunch and hit the river again down-stream for Murray Bridge. The wind finally passed and took the clouds with it, so now we had a beauti-ful clear day again. Late in the afternoon we tied up in Murray Bridge again for our final night and an-other kayak excursion. Friday we got up a bit earlier so we could shove off at 8am. We had a bit of tail wind and going with the river flow we made good time. Nothing eventful or uneventful happened on the way so we tied up at the marina with ½ hour to spare. We debriefed the manager and let him know a few things to look at, one of which was a small infestation of ants. We unloaded our stuff and we could now hit the road and not the river.

The boat was five double bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with a spa), a large kitchen and dining area with dark marble bench tops with matching marble dining table. I think who ever owned it before it be-came a rental wasn’t exactly poor. There was a nice rooftop deck area which we used every day. It was a very enjoyable few days on the river. Subject: Reflections on COVID-19 quarantine -[ I’m not the author]

Half of us are going to come out of this quarantine as amazing cooks. The other half will come out with a drinking problem.

I used to spin that toilet paper like I was on Wheel of Fortune. Now I turn it like I'm cracking a safe.

I need to practice social distancing from the refrigerator.

Still haven't decided where to go for Easter --- The Living Room or The Bed-room

PSA: every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit. Pajamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom.

Home-schooling is going well. 2 students suspended for fighting and 1 teacher fired for drinking on the job.

I don't think anyone expected that when we changed the clocks we'd go from Standard Time to the Twilight Zone

This morning I saw a neighbour talking to her cat. It was obvious she thought her cat understood her. I came into my house, told my dog... we laughed a lot.

Quarantine Day 5: Went to this restaurant called THE KITCHEN. You have to gather all the ingredients and make your own meal. I have no clue how this place is still in business.

(My favourite) My body has absorbed so much soap and disinfectant lately that when I pee it cleans the toilet.

Day 5 of Home Schooling: One of these little monsters called in a bomb threat.

I'm so excited --- it's time to take out the garbage. What should I wear?

I hope the weather is good tomorrow for my trip to ‘’Puerto Backyarda’’. I'm getting tired of ‘’Los Livingroom’’.

Classified Ad: Single man with toilet paper seeks woman with hand sanitizer for good clean fun.

Day 6 of Home Schooling: My child just said "I hope I don't have the same teacher next year".... I'm offended.

Better 6 feet apart than 6 feet under… .
