ABRAMembershipThe Aldinga Bay Residents Association (ABRA) is a comminuty group focused on supporting theneeds of the community in the greater Aldinga Bay area.

We have a proud history of holding community meetings, working with government and non-government bodies on behalf of our residents and community. We produce a local newsletter knownas ‘Aldinga Bay’s Coastal Views’, to keep our members and the community informed and provide aforum for discussion on items of local interest or concern.

When the ABRA talks, people listen, and we provide a voice for the residents of the Aldinga Bayregion. We invite Elected Representatives from Federal, State and Local Government (Council) toattend our public meetings to talk about issues that they are responsible for.

Why become a Member? ABRA relies on members of the community volunteering their time andskills to run our association. Without this we would not be able to support local causes, publishCoastal Views or facilitate public meetings. Membership fees are only $10.00 per financial year for anindividual membership, $20 for families and $5.00 for concession card holders. Fees fall due onemonth following our AGM which is usually in July/August.

Everyone is welcome to attend our public meetings, listen to speakers and take part in interesting andlively discussions. However, only financial ABRA members are eligible to vote. We welcome allresidents and businesses who reside or are located in the 5173 and 5174 region to join today .

COVID19 UpdateThe COVID-19 pandemic is a constantly developing situation, with new restrictions and measuresregularly announced. To ensure that you are kept up to date with the accurate and recent informationABRA recommends our readers rely on trusted sources such as the ABC and Government Websites;www.health.gov.au and www.sahealth.sa.gov.au

This pandemic is serious, and we strongly suggest that our readers follow the official advice fromGovernment Authorities. If we, as a community, follow this advice we will pull through this.

During this time please look after your friends, neighbours and those who are particularly vulnerablewho may be feeling anxious or worried. Having a little extra patience and understanding will help tomake this unprecedented situation a little less frustrating and difficult.

With places of worship, pubs and other social venues closed people may feel cut off from ourcommunity. Where you can please take the time to call or message those who might be isolated.

Taking care of the mental health in our community is just as important as our physical health duringthese times.

Please continue to support local businesses where you can, keeping in mind the current restrictions.

Aldinga New School UpdateReaders might be aware of the release earlier this year of the concept desgins for the new Birth- Year12 school planned for Aldinga.ABRA has invited the Department for Education to provide a Department Spokesperson to come to apublic ABRA meeting to discuss the concept designs and answer questions the community mighthave. While we have now cancelled our next public forum due to the COVID 19 situation, ABRA will workwith the Department to facilitiate this in some form some time soon.In Feburary 2020 the City of Onkaparinga Council made comment to the State CommissionAssessment Panel stating that there was a “need for further consultation withcouncil staff on certainissues”The letter goes on to talk about the roads surrounding the school including a new council managedroad to be constructed on the western side of the school which could connect through to AldingaBeach Road. The Council has also sought that assessments on car parking be made on the future capacity of theschool as opposed to the initial capacity.ABRA will invite the Council to attend any public meeting on the topic of the new school so that theycan respond to any issue relating to the school that is within the councils responsibility.

Do you have a question or a comment about the new school? ABRA would be happy to contact theDepartment on behalf of the Aldinga Community with a list of concerns, comments or questions. Sendthem through to [email protected] so we can collate them and send them on for a response.

Aldinga Beach B-7 School Mentoring Program

Willunga Farmers Market Birthday

Aldinga Beach B - 7 School invites the assistance of volunteer mentors to help out in our MentoringProgram. The program has seen over 1200 students and 130 volunteers participate.

Community volunteers spanning generations enjoy the opportunity to provide guidance, pass onskills, share experiences and expertise with students in an informal, safe, yet structured environment.Training and supervision is provided by the school.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their skills and look to the future withoptimism.

The absolute strength of this initiative is the generations interacting together to achieve excellence ina shared passion. Primary students yearn to hear the rich life experiences of community mentors.

St Ann’s Anglican ChurchOn Easter Day the congregation of St Ann’s AnglicanChurch covers a cross with flowers as a sign of the joy ofthe resurrection, and after the service, it is carried out tostand beside South Road.

Even though services have had to be suspended fornow, the cross will go out again this year, and anyonewho wants to celebrate joy and hope at this time isinvited to bring a flower to put on it, some time between8 am and 12 midday on Easter Day.

You can pull over in Stonehouse Lane, for safety. Thereshould be no health risk for individuals in the open air.

What is a Church when it is closed?

We have been obliged, as have manychurches, to suspend church services forthe time being. This is very sad, especially with the very special servicesof Easter approaching.

However, worship and prayer are notdependent on a church building or aSunday service! After all, the Church isalive and strong in some countries whereChristian worship is outlawed for politicalor other reasons!

At this time the congregation here isencouraged to be a "virtual" church, joining in prayer in our own homes at thetime we would normally meet at St Ann's,and sharing in worship transmittedelectronically.

We look forward to the day when we canonce again open our doors and celebrateGod’s amazing grace together.

Kangaroo Island has arguably suffered its worst disaster since Europeansettlement… a bushfire , which, most of the time was impossible to fight.

The fire that did the most damage by far, was that which was started bylightning in the larrikin lagoon region of Flinders Chase National park. Anyenquiry will establish what happened, but it would appear that the fire was

stoppable in its early stages.

The lightning strike was reported early that morning, and the dozers andGrader were ready to go in and contain it. Permissiom was denied from thepowers that be, for three hours. When permission was finally given, it wastoo late. The fire jumped the breaks, and was away. The rest is history.

I lived on KI for ten years, and was almost burnt out just before we left. Iwas sitting in my upstairs office at The Ravine, when I saw smoke about fivekilometres away in The Chase after overnight lightning. I rang National Parksheadquarters, and offered to go out with my camels, and put it out with aknapsack. I was told that it was being monitered, and not to worry. Well, several days later it ‘came out’, and burnt out a large area. These are notisolated incidents, where people on the ground are ignored, and decisions

made by people in offices, often far removed from the scene.

Surely, if several knowledgeable locals in each district had the power to actearly, these ongoing ‘stuffups’ could be avoided. Maybe after this event,

things will change.

The other big lesson staring us in the face, is the fact that Fire Bunkershave rarely been mentioned during these fires. Staff from the WildernessLodge on the south coast went into a Bunker there, and were saved. Thereare other isolated examples around the country, where well constructed

Bunkers have allowed residents to stay with their properties and save housesetc, after the fire front has passed. This cannot be ignored. It seems thatgutless Governments will not sanction them due to fear of litigation if people

are killed in these situations. Well, they had better have a rethink.

Surely for future dwellings to be approved by Councils, apart fromfireproof materials being mandatory (including Hempcrete), Fire Bunkersshould also be mandatory. Instead of that extra spare bedroom, that hardlyever gets used, install a Bunker, and stick a bed in it. We will watch with

interest.

The 2019-20 Hooded Plover breeding season hasnow ended. It was the earliest start to a season onrecord with the first nest discovered in earlyAugust at Ochre Cove and that was quicklyfollowed by several others. It has also been one ofthe more successful seasons the Hooded Plovershave had in recent years with 3 chicks managingto survive to become flying juveniles. Two chicksfrom the same nest survived at Ochre Cove inNovember 2019, while a single chick survived atthe Star of Greece end of Port Willunga in January2020. It could have been even better with 2 of thechicks at Port Willunga surviving for 24 daysbefore disappearing from unknown causes, whilethe last surviving chick at Moana was lostfollowing a dog attack inside the roped off areajust a day or so away from being able to fly.The six breeding pairs in the Onkaparinga regionhad a total of 18 nests during the season. Of these8 nests were lost to various causes includinghuman disturbance which caused the birds to beoff the nest for too long in hot weather, predatorssuch as foxes and ravens taking the eggs andalso eggs being washed away in storms. Theother 10 nests managed to hatch a total of 28chicks, but 25 of these chicks failed to survive fora variety of causes, leaving just the 3 survivingchicks.During the winter non-breeding season HoodedPlovers will often leave their nesting beaches andgather together at preferred feeding sites.Sometimes we even have Hooded Plovers fromas far away as Victor Harbor joining our localbirds. In the past few weeks, two of the juveniles(one from Ochre Cove and the Port Willunga one)have often been seen with a juvenile from Seacliff(banded JR) and a number of adults on the reef atSnapper Point. The other Ochre Cove juvenile(banded KZ) has recently been seen at Yankalilla.A big thanks to all the beachgoers and dogwalkers whose interest and cooperation has been
