Retired Police Dog 'Finn' and his owner PC Dave Wardell were announced as the winners of the Kennel Club Friends for Life competition at Crufts on the final evening.

Campaigning Finn wins Friends for Life

Finn was stabbed several times as he protected Dave from an armed

attack in 2016, saving his life. Finn was badly injured and his fight for his life led the duo to launch the ‘Finns Law’ campaign, highlighting the value of all service animals and the injustice of their treatment in the law.

The campaign is driving a new Bill which aims to make attacking a service animal a specific criminal offence, which through sustained campaigning by

Dave and Finn, is now in its final stages in the House of Lords.

The other finalists in the Friends for Life competition were Lance the Army arms and explosives search

dog, Ringo the canine blood donor, Emma the assistance dog and Snoopy who was entered in the Child's Best Friend category.

The show attracted an entry of nearly 21,000 dogs and was watched on TV on Channel 4 and More4 by 11.24 million viewers. All the action from the main arena, including the judging of Best in Show on the Sunday evening, was viewed online on YouTube by a global audience of over one million. Crufts had a Facebook reach of 21,770,062 people and the number of visitors to the show was 166,513, a record figure and nearly 1,000 up on last year.

Approximately 500 journalists attended the show, including from all the major national newspapers and TV networks, and with over 1,300 news items published both before and during Crufts. This included coverage which had been achieved as a result of 272 radio interviews, 65 photocalls, over 40 videos syndicated and more than 30 press releases generated by the Kennel Club press team.

Press coverage of the event has been largely positive, with much space allocated in the national and regional media to the various canine disciplines and initiatives embraced by the Kennel Club and highlighted at Crufts. Photos of the BIS winner Dylan appeared in most of the national newspapers the next morning and he and his devoted owner made an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show on ITV a few days later, thus giving high-profile publicity to Crufts and pedigree dogs.

LUC AND ZURI WIN OBEDIENCE CHAMPIONSHIPSThe winners of the Kennel Club Dog and Bitch Obedience Championships at Crufts were, respectively, Stephanie Woollam of Bristol with Saartjie Luc and Kathy Russell of Ellesmere Port in Cheshire with Ob Ch Ruskath Makana Image, known as Zuri.

Both dogs are Working Sheepdogs and the judge was Philomena Barnes who herself won the Obedience Bitch Championship at Crufts last year with a Working Sheepdog

Stephanie said of her success with Luc: “I am extremely happy and a bit shocked. Luc went

into the parade and was very happy and enjoyed it and I thought he might put it all together today – not necessarily to win it, but just to do a good round. And he did – he went in there and did exactly what I wanted him to do.

Kathy commented on her victory with Zuri: “Winning

at Crufts is a dream come true, as ultimately it’s what you want to achieve. Obedience is all about teamwork and Crufts is an entity in itself. Some people say you need a bit of luck, but I don’t think you need luck. You need a dog with a brilliant temperament to cope with the unique

atmosphere. You cannot go to anywhere else in the UK to get the atmosphere of Crufts.

All competitors at the championships had made it through to the final from one of the 46 championship shows that hosted qualifying classes for the Crufts Obedience Championships.

English Toy Terrier wins Junior Warrant final

Ch Witchstone Tommy Hawk at Richpin JW, an English Toy Terrier owned by Richard

Forsythe and Clive Milkins from Brighton, won the Junior Warrant Winner of the Year competition final at Crufts, handled by Richard.

‘Spike’ is two years of age and has had a great start to his dog show career, winning the Junior Warrant.

Spike and Richard were up against nine other finalists for the coveted title but Spike and Richard wowed judge Stuart Plane in the exciting final.

The Junior Warrant Winner of the Year competition is held annually and is for dogs which have gained

the title of Junior Warrant during the previous year.

There were heats held throughout the UK in 2018, with five dogs and a reserve selected by the judge at each of the heats. Sixty-two top young dogs and their handlers were then invited to the semi-finals at the Kennel Club’s Discover Dogs event at ExCeL London, where ten finalists were selected to compete at Crufts.

Runner-up in the Junior Warrant final was the Australian Shepherd, Ch Allmark The Sequel JW ShCM, owned by Angie Allan and Andrew Winfrow from Oakham, Rutland and handled by Angie.

On the first day of Crufts, the Welsh Springer Spaniel Club, Welsh Kennel Club, and the

Kennel Club all joined forces to support the Lucy’s Law campaign for Wales, in a ‘flash mob’ style display of unity from this iconic Welsh breed.

After recent confirmation by the UK Government that Lucy’s Law – the multi-award-winning campaign to ban third party selling of puppies by pet shops

and other commercial dealers which will soon come into effect in England – all eyes are now on Wales to follow suit.

Sporting their own Welsh flag bandanas and bright pink Lucy’s Law rosettes, these beautiful dogs, and their

owners, had a clear message for the Welsh Government – to spring into action and finally end the misery caused by the Welsh third party puppy trade.

Jane and ‘Barney’ won the competition in front of a packed Resorts World Arena at the NEC in Birmingham, beating 15 other vulnerable breeds to be crowned winner. Barney is no stranger to Crufts – he has been awarded Best in Breed for the last two years and this was his third appearance in the Vulnerable Native Breeds competition final.

The Kennel Club Vulnerable British and Irish Breeds competition helps raise awareness of rare native breeds whose annual puppy registrations stand at fewer than 300, thus leaving them at risk from disappearing from the UK’s streets and parks. Just 50 Skye Terriers were registered with the Kennel Club in 2018.

Barney was chosen by judge Paul Eardley as having the best overall quality evident from each of the 16 dogs representing their breeds.

The Kennel Club launched this competition for dog show exhibitors who show vulnerable British and Irish breeds, to raise awareness of these breeds and to recognise those who are dedicated to their survival and prosperity.

Dogs qualified for the final by winning Best of Breed at a designated group championship show during 2018.

Jerry and Maggie Stephens’ Curly Coated Retriever, Sh Ch Brightmeadow Never Say Die JW ShCM, was named as Reserve Best Vulnerable Breed.

The team comprised Champion Allmark The Sequel JW ShCM handled by Angie, Champion

Allmark Forty Second Street at Wilduc JW ShCM handled by Dave Wilson, Champion Allmark Licensed To Thrill handled by Pete Simmons and Champion Allmark Vanity Fayre JW ShCM handled by Robyn Arnall, won the ultimate breeder’s title with their team of Australian Shepherds in front of a packed Resorts World Arena at the NEC, Birmingham. The team beat 32 other breeders to win the competition.

Judge Paul Harding selected Angie’s team for the prize as the breeder with the best overall quality evident in their dogs. Angie bred all four dogs in partnership with Robert Harlow from Sevenoaks in Kent.

All the dogs in the team are descendants of Champion Allmark Careless Whisper JW. Two are her children and two are her grandchildren.

Reserve best breeder was awarded to Averil Cawthera-Purdy from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire with her team of Pomeranians which she breeds under the Lireva kennel name.

The competition, sponsored by Agria Pet Insurance, involves teams accruing points at group and general championship shows throughout the year. Each team comprised three or four dogs of one breed, all bred by the same breeder or breeding partnership.

Colour All shades of black, grey, brown, fawn, with or without white. Solid white or white with markings in one of these colours.

Size Ideal height: Dogs 58cm-65cms (223/4-251/2ins); Bitches 53cm-61cms (203/4-24ins). With a tolerance of +/- 1cm.

Faults Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and on the dog’s ability to perform its traditional work.

Note Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.

BREACH OF REGULATION F3 – CODE OF CONDUCT

At its meeting on 27 February 2019, the Kennel Club Disciplinary Committee upheld a complaint against Miss C Nolcini (Exhibitor) in respect of her conduct towards a judge at the Ashford & Faversham District CS Open Show on 30 September 2018.

It imposed the following penalties, noting that she is also a Kennel Club approved judge and as such a high standard of conduct is expected:

AMENDMENTS TO BREED STANDARDS

At its recent meeting the Board approved the following amendments to Breed Standards:

COLLIE (SMOOTH)

Temperament Friendly disposition with no trace of nervousness or aggressiveness.

Forequarters Sloping shoulders, well laid back. Good return of upper arm placing elbow below withers. Elbows turning neither in nor out. Forelegs straight and muscular. Moderate bone. Flexible pasterns without weakness.

Colour Three recognised colours: Sable and white, Tricolour and Blue Merle.

Sable: any shade from light gold to rich mahogany or shaded sable. Light straw or cream colour is highly undesirable.

Tricolour: predominantly black with rich tan markings about the legs and head. A rusty tinge in top coat is highly undesirable.

Blue Merle: predominantly clear, silvery blue, splashed and marbled with black. Rich tan markings preferred but absence should not be penalised. Large black markings, slate colour or rusty tinge top or undercoat are highly undesirable.

All may carry typical white collie markings to a greater or lesser degree. Following markings are favourable: white collar full or part, white front, legs and feet, white tail tip. A blaze may be carried on muzzle or skull. White markings not to extend behind withers or above the hock. All white or predominantly white is most undesirable.

BORZOI

Head and Skull Head long, lean and in proportion to dog’s size and substance. In bitches head finer than in dogs. Well filled in below eyes. Measurement equal from occiput to inner corner of eye and from inner corner of eye to tip of nose. Skull very slightly domed and narrow, stop imperceptible. Head fine so that bones and principal veins can be clearly seen. Viewed from side, forehead and upper line of muzzle form an almost straight, slightly convex line, inclining to Roman nose allowing flexibility of nasal cartilage. Jaws long, deep and powerful; nose large and black, nicely rounded, neither cornered nor sharp. Viewed from above skull should look narrow, converging very gradually to tip of nose. Occipital process very accentuated.

NEW INTERIM BREED STANDARD – BARBET

The Kennel Club Board has approved a new Interim Breed Standard for the Barbet.

Introductory paragraph A Breed Standard is a guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance, including the correct colour, of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. From

time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Breed Watch section of the Kennel Club website here http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/services/public/breeds/watch for details of any such issues. If a feature or quality is desirable, it should only be present in the right measure. However if a dog possesses a feature, characteristic or colour described as undesirable or highly undesirable it is strongly recommended that it should not be rewarded in the show ring.

General Appearance Rustic, medium size, athletic, with balanced proportions. A dense covering of curly hair and a distinctive beard which gives the breed its name. Substantial head and bone.

Characteristics Hardy gundog with well-developed senses. Intelligent and energetic.

Temperament Responsive, loving, loyal and sociable, with even disposition.

Head and Skull Strong, wide and large. Skull rounded and broad, occiput not prominent. Well defined stop. Head planes parallel. Muzzle square, slightly shorter than skull and fully covered with hair. Beard well furnished, length in keeping with overall coat. Nose large, with well opened nostrils, fully pigmented, in harmony with coat colour.

Eyes Medium size, round, expressive, dark hazel to dark brown in colour. Fully pigmented eye rims harmonising with overall coat colour, fawn dogs having brown or black pigment.

Ears Long, flat and wide, covered entirely by long hair. Set at, or slightly below eye level. Ear leather extends beyond corner of mouth, with hair extending past the nose.

Mouth Jaws strong with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. Upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Lips thick and fully pigmented, with tight flews.

Neck Short and strong.

Forequarters Shoulders oblique, upper arm sloping, strong and muscular. Forearm straight and well boned.

Body Firm, level topline. Length of body, from point of shoulder to point of buttock, slightly greater than height at withers. Well-developed, broad, deep chest reaching the elbows. Ribs rounded but not barrel shaped. Loin slightly arched, short and strong.

Hindquarters Moderately angulated with low hocks. Rear pasterns upright.

Feet Round, broad and covered with hair. Well padded.

Tail Low set, reaching the hock and forming a slight hook at the tip. The end of the tail is carried slightly above the horizontal in motion. Never curved or curled over the back.

Gait/Movement Easy, powerful, balanced movement with strides of medium length. Topline remains level.

Coat A defining characteristic. Hair is profuse, water resistant and covers the whole body evenly with thick, natural curls ranging from large and loose to small and tight. Skin is thick. The coat can be presented in different lengths. Working clip acceptable provided there is enough length that

KCAI PREFERRED EDUCATIONAL PROVIDERS (PEPS)

As members may be aware, the KCAI PEP initiative was introduced as a service to KCAI Scheme members to point them in the direction of available courses which complement the scheme’s required knowledge.

Following an internal audit, it is with regret that the decision has been taken to withdraw this initiative, as there are not enough Educational Providers listed to provide members with a wide enough range of courses sufficient to meet the KCAI Scheme requirements.

It has long been an ambition to provide this service to the KCAI Membership, however, it must be an effective and wide ranging resource, and this cannot be sustained in its current format.

It is acknowledged that, in addition to the resources already supplied by the scheme, members are best placed to seek further nourishment to their experience and knowledge via their own individual research.

n. General canine Society Open Shows: an additional fee of £1 per class for all classes over 300. an additional fee of £2 per class for all classes over 600.

o. Additional fee of 5p per entry over 1,000 entries per day, up to a maximum of £100 per day for Limited and Open Agility shows organised by Authorised Clubs

p. For Licences issued to Authorised Clubs or Societies for Open Agility Shows there would be no change to fees for up to and including the first 10 licences per year, thereafter from 11-15 licences the fee would be £150 per day and for 16 or more licences a year it would be £250 per day.

q. For Licences issued to Authorised Clubs or Societies for Limited Agility Shows there would be no change to fees up to and including the first 10 licences per year, thereafter from 11-15 licences the fee would be £100 per day and for 16 or more licences a year it would be £150 per day.

TRIALS LICENCES

Two/three day Field or Championship Working Trial £35 One day Field or an Open or Members Working Trial £25 CHANGE OF LICENCEVoluntary change of date or issue of revised licence £6 *To cover Licences for General, Breed and Obedience Shows, Agility Shows and Flyball Competitions, fee payable for each applicable activity.

KENNEL CLUB COMPUTER SERVICESIn addition to the above fees, computerised documents, reports and pedigrees maybe available at rates of charges approved by the General Committee.

RALLY & LISTED STATUS AGILITYThe fees for Rally & Listed Status Agility are both £60. Listed Agility also has an additional fee of 5p per dog over 1000 dogs (maximum £100).
