March 2, at the FPOA’s first (and you can bet not

fantastic food catered by Southern Q, along with

music by the Perfect Beat. Reveling in the grand

fais-do-do are (clockwise from below) Amelda

Howze, Jordan and Bascomb Johnson; Pam and

Whoooo’s on Second? If you look up in one of the pine trees on the second hole on the Grey Fox Course, you’ll see

an owl’s nest and, if you’re lucky, a great horned owl mother.

On March 27, one of her fledglings left the nest and hopped up on the back steps of John and

Holly Elrod’s home on South Shamrock. Holly, who has been fascinated with owls her entire

life, contacted a local wildlife officer to ensure the baby was not injured during its trek across the

street to the Elrods’ home. The officer made sure the fledgling was healthy, and it was returned to

the tree where the nest is located.

News quickly spread to some of the other local residents who, for three days, were privileged

enough to watch the mother teaching her baby to fly and forage for food. As of the writing of this

article, the other fledgling had not yet braved the ground.

So, as you’re driving past the second hole on the Grey Fox Course on South Shamrock,

please give a hoot! Slow down and keep a watchful eye. This is now the unofficial baby owl

crossing! —- Text and photos by Holly Hatch

Left: This “little”

bundle of joy landed

on the Elrods’ back

steps, attitude and all,

while his (or her) less

adventurous brother

(or sister), right,

opted to hang out

with Mom (below) a

little longer. And why

not, especially when

snake appears to be

on the dinner menu?

Foxfire Ladies Golf

Association Opening Meeting The FLGA held its opening meeting on

Wednesday, March 6. The weather was too

coooooooooold for golf, but the meeting went

on as scheduled, led by the 2019 board mem-

bers and a nice luncheon catered by Southern

Q. The FLGA is 39 members strong in 2019.

The league really gets into full swing in

April as the weather (hopefully) gets

nicer and the first major tournament,

Spring Ringers, takes place on April 17 and

18. Pick a partner and compete in this two-day

net competition.

The pairs league also starts in April

and continues throughout the summer.

Two-person teams battle it out with

other teams to determine the winner.

A note on rules: The PGA has made

several rules changes that have taken

effect in 2019. If you have watched

professional golf you may have seen Tour

players penalized because they have forgotten

some of the rules changes.

We hope to welcome Maggie Watts, CGA

spokesperson, to Foxfire to discuss these rules

changes in the near future.

The 2019 FLGA Board includes MJ

Sheldon, chair; Sue Sedlak, vice chair;

Kim Spaulding, treasurer; Connie

Hochstetler, secretary; Pam Reyes, Jackie

Martin, Diane Cray, directors. – Pam Reyes

Golf News and Notes

HOLE-IN-ONE

When she isn’t busy providing

FLGA news to FoxTrax, Pam Reyes

is busy on the golf course – as in,

scoring her first hole-in-one. Pam’s

8-iron shot on the 13th hole of the Red

Fox course on Monday, March 18,

landed her this honor.

“My first hole-in-one – I felt

amazed!” she says. “I was ready to go

to the clubhouse and celebrate, which

we eventually did.”

That is, she adds, after getting an 8

on the next hole. Oh well, that’s golf.

Congratulations, Pam!

Foxfire PD’s Daniel Ritter Promoted to Sergeant

Congratulations are in

order for Foxfire Police

(former) Corporal Daniel

Ritter (pictured right with

Foxfire Mayor Mick

McCue), who was promoted

to sergeant at the Foxfire

Village Council meeting on

February 12.

Among the guests present

at the ceremony were Ritter’s

wife, parents, in-laws and

friends.

Sergeant Ritter started his

law enforcement career in

2007 at Montgomery

Community College, where

he took courses in criminal

justice and was elected presi-

dent of the Criminal Justice

Club. Four years later, he

completed the Basic Law

Enforcement course and

started working for the

Town of Robbins Police

Department. He came to the

Foxfire Village Police

Department in 2016.

As of this past January,

Ritter has

taken over

the K-9

duties from

Chief Chad

Shue. He

recently

certified

through the

North

American Police Working

Dog Association in the areas

of narcotics, tracking and

article searches, and he and

Karma (pictured above at last

year’s Foxfire Days event)

are now a certified K-9 team.
