Sugar is one of the primary enemies of good oral health, most dentists agree. The problem is how ubiquitoussugar is in all of its forms. Though there has been a campaign against high fructose corn syrup as of late, the truth is that no refined sugar is good for the body and it certainly isn’t good for the teeth. And it’severywhere.

Soda, fruit juice, cookies, starches of all kinds (particularly the white, refined kind). All of these contributenot only to the nation’s obesity epidemic, but to cavities as well. Fruit is a good source of sugar, althoughyou should be careful when eating the dried variety, which has some of the same properties as refined sugar.Adults and children should limit their consumption of sugar general to maintain good oral health.

Many dentists note that gum disease is often overlooked when it comes to potential oral health problems. The truth is that gingivitis and other ailments of the gums are a much more likely cause of tooth loss thandirect tooth decay.•A number of factors can lead to gum disease, including poor hygiene, poor diet, alcoholismand malnutrition. In most cases, it is the buildup of plaque that leads directly to gingivitis. Even thosewho care very little about the condition of their teeth and gums should take heed: some studies have shownthat there may be a link between gum disease and the potential for heart attack.

Many dentists point out that just as there are bad foods, there are also good ones that promote healthyteeth and gums. These foods include sugarless gum, which can act as a saliva stimulator. Saliva helps removeacid and food particles from the teeth, decreasing the chance for decay and plaque buildup. If you can getinto the habit of brushing your teeth after meals or at least rinsing your mouth out, it will have a beneficialeffect as well.

No one knows for sure where baseball originated but most baseball buffs will concur that thesport is based on the English game of rounders. In the United States, baseball became popular inthe early 1800's, originally known as townball.

Throughout this time period, smaller communities formed teams, while larger cities formedleagues. There is some question as to who founded the original rules of baseball. Some contend thatAlexander Cartwright in 1845 published a list of rules. However, others contend that it was AbnerDoubleday who invented the game. Most baseball historians believe Alexander Cartwright is,indeed, the originator of baseball as the rules he created are still in place today.

The first ever-recorded baseball duel was played in 1846 between Alexander Cartwright's Knicker-bockers and the New York Baseball Club. The Knickerbockers lost the game at Elysian Fields, inHoboken, New Jersey. In 1857, a meeting has held and over 25 amateur teams from the Northeastclamored together to hash out rules among other things.

The next year, the National Association of Base Ball Players was formed and the teams, needingfinancial assistance to support the league, intermittently charged fans an admission fee.

The 1860's brought about the Civil War and the interest in baseball, understandably, diminished. After the war, baseball's popularity began to grow more than ever. The league's growth resulted infans being charged a regular admission fee to watch games. The fees were neededto support the league and the ongoing traveling. Winning also became animportant part of the game. Although the league was comprised of amateurs, sponsors occasionally paid the players secretly so that the amateur playerswouldn't leave a particular team. The idea of paid players eventually became the

norm and today baseball is one of North America's favorite sports.

Norma was born Norma C Hoeger on July 7, 1931in Oakland CA . Her family moved to SacramentoCA in search of work in 1935.Norma was always a hard worker and really liked towork as she grew up; she had several Jobs workingin for insurance businesses. She worked for the StateBoard of Equalization, Workman’s Comp, andmany others. Then she met her husband WarrenMangels, Norma said with such a loving way that hehad the best sense of humor, he had a way of tellingher things that he didn’t like by not saying a wordjust doing them to show her what she looked like, she said it would make her laugh so hard. They weremarried for 43 years until he passed away at the ageof 90 on July 15, 2015Norma has two daughters Sheryl Ann and LynnMarie, she has been blessed with 3 lovelygrandchildren and 5 great grand children.Norma and her husband were not very fond oftraveling, but her favorite place was when she wentto Hawaii on her honeymoon. When they wouldwant to do something fun they would go into SanFrancisco to visit her husband’s grandfather, he hada wonderful three story Victorian Home that had 21rooms and they just loved it, the house was 110years old and absolutely beautiful. As a child growing up Norma did learn to play theviolin, she said that she certainly wasn’t goodenough to play at Carnegie Hall but she did enjoy it.She also liked to play baseball! She also remembersthat she let her daughter have a pet snake and hisname was Gentle Ben.Norma did have two sisters and a brother, herbrother grew up to be a Sacramento Fireman .Norma would describe herself as happy, easy goingand a people person. If she were to have a motto, itwould be to treat people as you would like to betreated yourself. If she were to give the newresidents moving in , she would tell them “Don’t beafraid to get out and meet new people!”Norma loves living at the Carlton, it is so clean ,convenient, and she doesn’t have to cook or do yardwork!

Regular exercise can help seniors remain healthier and more indepen-dent as they age. Studies have shown that seniors who exercise regular-ly have longer life expectancies, remain independent longer, andimprove both physically and psychologically.

Balance decreases as we age, and more importantly, falling is a major problem.According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one ofevery three Americans over the age of 65 falls each year, and among individuals65-84, falls account for 87% of all fractures and are the second leading cause ofspinal cord and brain injuries. Many seniors believe that walking is enoughexercise to stay fit and healthy. But, according to Dr. Robert Sweezy, renownedosteoporosis expert, walking is not enough to increase muscle and bone density- a key component in remaining independent.

The Live 2 B Healthy program isproven to increase balance, mobili-ty and strength - directly reducingfalls and injuries that could hampersenior mobility and hasten healthdecline. That keeps seniors vitaland independent for much longer. It is never too late to start an exer-cise regimen. Many seniors in theireighties and nineties, who havenever exercised in their lives, nowparticipate in Live 2 B Healthy pro-grams.

In fitness tests, after working with participants for three months, bal-ance had improved by over 250% and cardiovascular function by over80% by doing regular strength training, three times per week. Regularexercise keeps seniors independent by improving their balance and enduranceto prevent falls, injuries, as well as physical and cognitive decline.
