Director Matt Pinder, UK 2019, 1h30m, N/C 12+
Winner of the GFF19 Audience Award, Harry Birrell: Films of Love and War is a time capsule of poignant memory. Harry Birrell spent his life filming the world. Home movies of family events and fine romances now ache with fond nostalgia. Matt Pinder’s beautifully composed documentary plunders the treasure trove of Harry’s 400 films to capture a vivid sense of his life. GFF19

Director François Ozon Cast Melvil Poupaud, Denis Ménochet, Swann Arlaud, France 2019, 2h17m, subtitles, 15
François Ozon's gripping true-life drama is an engrossing and topical examination of the Catholic Church abuse scandal, telling the story of three men who come together to dismantle the code of silence and pursue justice for the abuse they suffered as children. Based on real events from the 2019 conviction of Cardinal Philippe Barbarin of Lyon for concealing the conduct of serial abuser Father Bernard Preynat, By the Grace of God is an urgent portrait of resistance.
Thanks to Curzon.
Cielo + Q&ATuesday 1 October (18.15)
Director Alison McAlpine, Chile/Canada 2017, 1h18m, N/C 8+
Cielo is a cinematic reverie on the crazy beauty of the night sky, as experienced in the Atacama Desert, Chile, one of the best places on our planet to explore and contemplate its splendour. Director Alison McAlpine’s sublime nonfiction film drifts between science and spirituality, via the arid land, desert shores and lush galaxies. Planet Hunters in the Atacama’s astronomical observatories and desert dwellers who work the land and sea share their mythic stories and existential queries with remarkable openness and a contagious sense of wonder. A love poem for the night sky, Cielo transports us to a space, quiet and calm, within which we can ponder the infinite and unknown.
Followed by a Q&A with director Alison McAlpine.

Directors Dermot Lavery, Michael Hewitt, UK/Ireland 2019, 1h30m, CTBC
Based on the book Lost Lives, which records every single death since the beginning of the modern conflict known as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, this heartfelt documentary is a cinematic homage to the victims, from all sides. Powerfully narrated by famous Irish and Northern Irish actors, including Kenneth Branagh, Brendan Gleeson, Roma Downey and Stephen Rea, the film weaves archive footage with recordings of family and friends. A score performed by the Ulster Orchestra and striking cinematography complete this elegiac piece. The last entry in the book is Lyra McKee, a journalist who was fatally shot in 2019 – an essential reminder that peace can be a fragile process.

Director Marilyn Edmond Cast Kevin Guthrie, Siobhan Reilly, Stephen McCole, UK 2019, 1h44m, 15
Brian (a soulful Kevin Guthrie) has lost someone close to him. Outwardly, he keeps calm, goes to work and carries on, and nobody talks about the loss. He never feels that it’s possible to share his feelings, until care home owner Jeff (Stephen McCole) becomes a source of support and a flirtation blossoms with single mother Sam (Siobhan Reilly) that could be a reason to choose life. Moments of optimism clash with dark despair in a strikingly filmed tale shot in North Berwick. Connect is an ambitious attempt to confront the major issue of suicide among young men in Scotland.

Suzi Q + Q&A with Suzi Quatro Tuesday 8 October (20.20)
Director Liam Firmager, Australia 2018, 1h35m, N/C 18+
Suzi Q is the definitive, unexpurgated story of the girl from Detroit City who redefined the role and image of women in rock ‘n’ roll when she broke out around the world in 1973. A trailblazer and inspiration for a generation of female rock musicians who followed her, this new documentary reminds contemporary audiences of Suzi Q's pioneering influence, white-hot talent and string of incandescent pop-rock hits.Exiled to Europe during her success yet now largely forgotten in her homeland, we return with Suzi to Detroit. Exploring the long simmering family tensions and sibling rivalries that result from the success of one family member, this documentary reveals the price paid for success in a deeply personal exploration of fame, ambition and resilience. Still on the road after 50 years, Suzi Quatro surely is The Queen of Rock’n’Roll. Accept no substitutes.
Followed by a Q&A with Suzi Quatro.

Reservoir Dogs Tue 8 (17.40) & Wed 9 Oct (20.40)
Director Quentin Tarantino Cast Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, USA 1992, 1h39m, 18
Tarantino’s debut was one of the films that spearheaded the 1990s revolution in independent cinema, and it still crackles with energy, wit and confidence. After a bungled jewel heist, the thieves gather and attempt to figure out who is the traitor in their midst. Packed with era-defining images, characters and dialogue, Reservoir Dogs is a violent, vibrant shock.
Pulp Fiction - 35mm Mon 21 (17.10) & Wed 23 Oct (19.45)
Director Quentin Tarantino Cast John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson, Uma Thurman, USA 1994, 2h34m, 18
Tarantino established himself as the king of 1990s cinema with this multi-stranded gangster epic. Unforgettable characters, intensely quotable dialogue and some of the most iconic (and imitated) scenes in recent cinema history make Pulp Fiction an all-time classic. With career-best performances from an enormous cast, this is cinephile nirvana.
Jackie Brown - 35mmMon 14 (19.50) & Wed 16 Oct (17.15)
Director Quentin Tarantino Cast Pam Grier, Robert Forster, Samuel L Jackson, USA 1997, 2h34m, 18
In the wake of the phenomenal cultural impact of Pulp Fiction, Tarantino assembled another uniquely brilliant ensemble cast. This adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch is a slow-burner, and more considered than either of Tarantino’s previous films. Its reputation has grown over the years, with many Tarantino fans citing Jackie Brown as his best work.
Kill Double-Bill - Kill Bill: Volumes 1 & 2 - 35mmWednesday 30 October (17.50) - £14/£12 concs/£9 15-25 Card
Director Quentin Tarantino Cast Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, USA 2003/2004, 1h50m/2h16m (plus 20m interval), 18
Our season ends with Tarantino and Uma Thurman’s bloody homage to samurai cinema, shown in its entirety (with a brief interval so you can take a breath between the killings). Thurman gives the performance of a lifetime as The Bride, a former member of Bill’s Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. Betrayed and left for dead on the day of her wedding, now she is out for revenge. And she will have her revenge.

The Wicker Man - The Final Cut Thursday 31 October (20.45)
Director Robin Hardy Cast Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, UK 1973, 1h34m, 15
When a young girl mysteriously disappears, Police Sergeant Howie travels to a remote Scottish island to investigate. But this pastoral community, led by the strange Lord Summerisle, is not what it seems, as the devoutly religious detective soon uncovers a secret society of wanton lust and pagan blasphemy. A stunning and chilling film, The Wicker Man was the key inspiration for this summer's Midsommar.
The Tingler Thursday 31 October (18.15)
Director William Castle Cast Vincent Price, Philip Coolidge, Judith Evelyn, Darryl Hickman, USA 1959, 1h22m, 15
Dr Warren Chapin (Vincent Price) has made a surprising discovery - the spine-chilling sensation that people get when they are scared is due to a parasite that he dubs the ‘tingler’. In extreme circumstances, prolonged fear can cause the creature to damage a person's spine and even cause death if the victim can't scream, a theory that Oliver Higgins (Philip Coolidge) uses to deadly effect on his wife (Judith Evelyn). Soon the tingler is on the loose.
This year for Halloween we are turning to some of the classic actors who have defined horror on the big screen - Christopher Lee, Vincent Price... and Nicolas Cage? Join us for some guaranteed chills and thrills in the cinema, and remember - it’s only a movie...

Lemebel + Q&A Sun 6 Oct (14.45)
Director Joanna Reposi Garibaldi, Chile/Colombia 2019, 1h36m, subtitles, 15
Pedro Lemebel’s sharp, poetic texts and provocative performances make him one of South America’s most significant artists. Under Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile, Lemebel expressed things most wouldn’t dare. Lemebel embodied an uncomfortable gay identity and fiercely criticised the wish of some queer people to assimilate.
Joanna Reposi Garibaldi will join us for a Q&A after the screening.
A Dog Barking at the MoonSaturday 5 October (15.30)
Director Zi Xiang Cast Renhua Na, Gaowa Siqin, Zhang Yinyue, China/Spain 2019, 1h47m, subtitles, N/C 15+
In director Zi Xiang's feature debut, decades of open secrets and resentment create chaos within a Chinese family. When Huang Xiaoyu brings her white western boyfriend for a visit she gets caught up in her parents' ongoing feud. Zi Xiang expertly analyses repression which is woven into society and causes unhappiness to be passed down across generations.
Talking About Trees Saturday 26 October (15.00)
Director Suhaib Gasmelbari, France/Sudan/Germany/Chad/Qatar 2019 , 1h33m, subtitles, 15
In this uplifting documentary, four charismatic, retired film directors are united by their passion to restore and reopen their local cinema. Rare footage of older African films intercuts thoughtful, political, and at times nostalgic, discussions between the four protagonists as they reflect upon their lives. Director Suhaib Gasmelbari shows the nuances of living a life in resistance to political oppression, in a country where you talk about trees when you cannot talk about politics.
Sofia Tuesday 29 October (18.00) Director Meryem Benm'Barek-Aloïsi, France/Belgium/Qatar/Morocco 2018, 1h20m, 15
Whilst at a family lunch, Sofia’s water breaks. In denial about her pregnancy, her cousin takes her to hospital where she gives birth. Sofia is an unmarried teenager, and it is illegal in Morocco for her to be a single mum so she must name the man responsible and marry him. So begins a tumultuous journey to find the father of her baby. Set in the bustling metropolis of Casablanca, this surprising film interrogates issues of class, patriarchy and the lengths people will go to for security.
