April Fools Day The History Channel informs its viewers that on the first day of April in 1700, English pranksters began popularizing the annual tradition of April Fools’ Day by playing practical jokes on each other. Although the day, also called All Fools’ Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by differ-ent cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes. These in-cluded having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. Historians have also linked April Fools’ Day to ancient festivals such as Hilaria, which was cele-brated in Rome at the end of March and involved people dressing up in disguises. There’s also speculation that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the North-ern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. April Fools’ Day spread throughout Britain during the 18th century. In Scotland, the tradition be-came a two-day event, starting with “hunting the gowk,” in which people were sent on phony er-rands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which in-volved pranks played on people’s derrieres, such as pinning fake tails or “kick me” signs on them. Though playing pranks on people has historically been fun and funny this year April Fool’s Day is also the day we celebrate Easter – the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The great news is that the resurrection is no joke or hoax! Many have tried to prove so and failed. Others have dis-counted the accounts in the Scriptures as folk tales or “spiritualized” stories representing some deeper truths. In the end everyone who has made such attacks has shown themselves to be the fools. Paul wrote to the Romans, “For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22
Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23
and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for im-ages resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.” (Rom. 1:21 ESV) Concerning the message of the Gospel Paul also wrote to the Corinthians about God’s purpose and plan in raising Jesus from the grave, “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are per-ishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." (1 Cor. 1:17-19 ESV) To the world of unbelievers Easter may seem to be a foolish practice and celebration but to those who are being saved by repenting of their sins and believing in the work of Jesus Christ—He died, was buried and raised on the third day—they follow the wisdom of God. Thanks be to God.

April Projects We have now finished up many items to give to patients at Lake Norman Oncology. I hope you were able to see the display in the Williams Building. Upcoming projects will focus on Elder Care. The April meeting will consist of knitting and crocheting small squares that will turn into "Pocket Prayer Patches" (see below). Whether you already know how to knit or crochet, want to learn or just hone up your skills, please join us for a relaxing time of fellowship. Other projects we will be completing during our focus on Elder Care include fidget lap pads, wheelchair size blankets and afghans, and a variety of things that can be given as birthday presents. All items will be given to our local Elder Care facilities.
Please contact anyone who attends the Caring Crafters meetings for additional
information, or if you have a personal request. We are continually in need of workers, materials which can include gift certificates, and, most of all, your prayers. Please
come and join us anytime you can and bring a friend!
