“Look at the birds of the air, they neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns and yet your heavenly Creator feeds them, aren’t you just as valuable? And consider the lilies, how they grow, they neither toil, nor spin and yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these!” Matthew 6:26ff

Look at the birds, consider the lilies, contemplate the beautiful and extravagant, outrageous and absurd love of God for us all! This Easter, we celebrate the new life of Resurrection, we practice the absurd joy that God sees in us and the entire world and helps us spread that joy with reckless abandon! Even as life and death and life and death happen in a rhythm where sometimes its hard to distinguish between the two, we are held together in community with each other and hope for whatever comes next…

With that in mind, along with the birds and the lilies, we keep singing our collective song on the Eastside of St. Paul with a new partner and tenant - “The Listening House.” All of our treasures have been moved out of Heritage Hall to appropriate places where important things are kept and construction has begun to renovate the church basement with new bathrooms and carpet, new fixtures and paint, as Listening House will move in sometime in May.

For those of you who don’t know, Listening House is a non-profit organization that has operated in downtown St. Paul for over 30 years. It will be a space for people experiencing poverty who need to find purpose and meaning, community and education. Listening House will help provide small group classes and staff to assist with everyday needs. Watch for updates as we move forward with this new adventure.

I hope as you have looked to create simplicity in this Lenten season (getting rid of 40 bags of stuff in 40 days) or worn a rubber band on your wrist to remind yourself to “be still and know that God is God” that you will now also see the joy of resurrection this Easter season! Bay Lake CampIsland News for April 2017

Happy Spring! As the loons return to Bay Lake and the ice continues it’s thaw, we are happy to report a wonderful winter season at it’s end. Thanks to all our church groups and family gatherings that made Winter 2017 one for the books! As I write this, the car is being packed for the first spring trip north…we watch the Bay Lake Webcam for signs of open water, and we plan to head over to the island with supplies for the first spring weekend! We welcome many to the island in the coming months including Bloomington Schools - Office of Educational Equity and Leadership, several family gatherings, men’s fishing group from combined churches, a wedding celebration, Urban 4H Ramsey county, leaders from local Presbyterian churches for a Pastor Conference, Wayzata Community Church, and members from First Lutheran and other supporting congregations for work weekends.

Please join us for one of the following work weekends if you’re able by contacting Brenda Olson Bingea 651-247-0360 or Ray Plaskett 651-253-8500 to RSVP

April 22April 29-30May 12-13

Mark your calendars also for the Three of Us concert and fundraiser on Friday, April 28, in the First Lutheran sanctuary at 7pm. We will come together for song and lift our voices high, celebrating the 91st year of camping on the Island! Come one, come all! See you there…and,

See you on the Island, Brenda Olson Bingea, Director

Easter Garden at First Lutheran ChurchIt is the tradition at First Lutheran to decorate our worship space with a variety of Easter flowers that have been given in memory or in honor of loved ones. Your gift fills the sanctuary with the beautiful colors of the Easter season, and after our Easter Sunday worship, we invite you to take your poinsettia home and enjoy it in your own home! If you are interested in designating a flowers in a loved one’s memory or honor, please complete the form below and either send it in to the church office or drop in the offering plate by April 9.
