The Renfrew County District Health Unit Dental Staff will be at
Champlain Discovery on April 18, 19, 20 and 21, 2017
screening our Junior and Senior Kindergarten and Grade 2 and 8
students.
Please Note: The Dental Team will screen other students if
requested by parents or teachers.
Grade 7 Boys Basketball On March 22nd, the grade 7 boys basketball team had their tournament at Fellowes
High School. We were guaranteed three games. Our first game was against Rockwood.
The boys were nervous during the first half, but seemed to get into their groove during
the second half. There were some major technical difficulties with the clock adding an
extra 5 minutes to our second half. Unfortunately we lost this game by 4 points (25-21).
Our second game was against Mackenzie Public School. The boys played well, they
started passing and rebounding and had a great game. Unfortunately we lost 33-24.
Our last game was against Jean Lajoie and it was a nail biter!!! Each team played really
well and the score
went back and
forth. The boys
won 33-27! We did
not make it to the
quarter finals, how-
ever we did get to
play one more
game and it turned
out we were to
play Jean Lajoie
one more time.
This game was
even more exciting
than the first time we played Jean Lajoie!! It was an awesome game and the Champlain
Dragons were victorious once again!!! When this game finished, the referee told us that
this was the best ball game he refereed all day!!! What a compliment to both teams!!!
The boys had a great day, they had a positive attitude and they had perfect sportsman-
ship. I was so proud of the boys and their accomplishments today. Great job Dragons!!!

Sip Smart!™ Ontario Why are sugary drinks not good for your children’s teeth?
Regular intake of sugary drinks can increase your child’s risk of cavities. Soft drinks (both
regular and diet versions), lemonades and citrus fruit juices, are acidic and can erode the outer
surface of the teeth. This makes the enamel thinner and the tooth more prone to decay. 2 Try
these tips to keep your child’s teeth healthy:
-fructose,
dextrose, syrups or fruit juice from concentrate.
Sip Smart!™ Ontario is an initiative designed to teach children in Grades 3 to 7 what they need to know to make
healthy drink choices.
The Sip Smart!™ Ontario resources are fun and interactive. Families can find them online at www.brightbites.ca

The Smellies
On the evening of March 30th,
the "smelly" dreams of Mrs.
Montgomery's grade 2/3 class
came true at the Festival of Stars.
Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club
of Pembroke, the Festival is a
unique venue for students to
showcase hard work on their
creative endeavours. This group
of talented students presented a
choral speaking rendition of
"The Smellies," by Sheree Fitch.
When well-known Canadian
poet, Sheree Fitch saw the
performance, she remarked,
"OMG!!!!! THIS IS PRICELESS!
Thank you SO SO much! I loved
it!" She is planning a Skype date with the students to discuss what inspired her to write the poem
and to encourage them to become proud and fearless writers themselves.
Not only did the class win in their own age group, they got the best mark overall in choral speaking
and even better, they got the nod from the judge to perform on stage at Festival Hall with the best
of the best young musical talent in the Pembroke area. It will be televised on Cogeco Cable
on Monday, April 10 at 8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 13 at 5 p.m., Friday, April 14 at 5
p.m. and Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m.
Who knew that dreams could come true when...."we smell inside the garbage can!"?

Beading Project
Ms Edwards’ grade 4 class, and Mrs. Mulvihill’s grade 5 class, have
embarked on a learning journey with Christina Ruddy, from the
Pikwaknagan Cultural Centre. Christina has visited the classes with
teachings about First Nations culture and history. The students have
been learning about beading, the role it played in local culture prior,
during and after contact with the Europeans. Students in both classes
are currently learning how to bead in class, and look forward to shar-
ing their learning and knowledge with the school community. This
continues to be a wonderful addition to both Social Studies programs
- Grade 4, Canada’s Regions, and Early Societies; Grade 5, First Na-
tions, and People and the Environment. Stay tuned on Twitter for on-
going progress. It is also providing a very rich opportunity for stu-
dents to use many of their Math skills in a practical and meaningful
way - Number Sense and Numeration (addition, multiplication, alge-
bra), Patterning, Geometry, spatial reasoning, etc.
The school also welcomed Crystal Martin from Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI), in Ottawa. She was able to
share her knowledge of life in the north, particularly history, culture, and traditions of the Inuit. Stu-
dents in Mrs. Shields’, Mrs. Blais’, Mrs. Sloan’s, Mrs. Mulvihill’s, and Mrs. Edwards’ classes had the op-
portunity to listen to her presentation, and had many fabulous questions. They also enjoyed looking
at the artifacts she brought with her - original tools and utensils made from natural materials such as
bone and rock, hide from different northern animals.
We look forward to further enhancing our curriculum and learning opportunities with our community partners
throughout the Spring. Please feel free to contact the school if you have knowledge or experience that you
would like to share.
