Greater Galilee TripMay 6 & 7AfricanAmerican Churches MatterThe “Black Lives Matter” movement invokes many different reac-tions. But a fact that is not arguable is that Sunday worship is one of the most segregated times in Wis-consin. While our faith in Jesus unites us, the institu-tional history of the church separates us.

God calls us to change that, and you are invited to a specific opportunity to create that change! Jesus’ deep, deep prayer in John 17 (the entire chapter) is that we may all be one as Jesus and the Father are one. Come join a group of families and all ages Satur-daySunday, May 67 as we visit and converse with the people of Greater Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Central City Milwaukee.

Ministry FairApril 29 & 30 The Church Council invites you to attend the Ministry Fair at Grace Lutheran on April 29/30 before and af-ter each service. This is a perfect opportunity to find out how our ministries work and to ask ques-tions.

Have you ever thought you might like to take part in a particular ministry but the unknown time commit-ment held you back? Perhaps you were uncertain if you could do what was expected and wanted to ask questions. Many of our ministries offer short term or one time opportunities. Our ministry leaders at the Fair will be available to talk with you, answer ques-tions and concerns, and give you an overview of their ministry. Speaking with someone does not equal commitment until it is your choice.

Here are some questions for you to pray and ponder.• What is God calling me to do?• What gift has He given me to share with my

church family?

Please consider these questions also: • Are you good at planning events? • Do you love cooking? • Is organization your thing? • Are you creative? • Do you have the gift of seeing “the big pic-

ture?”• Do you delight in children?• Do you find young adults fun and interesting?• Is gardening your passion?• Do you love being with people?

The Message of Lent: Clarity & Humility

Love is the hardest task to do and the most difficult reality to accept.

I am talking here about love in the word Jesus uses, which in the Greek language is “agape”, and in the targeted group that Jesus loves which is “all the world”. This is a love that is unconditional, undeserved, and for all. It is a “transforming” love because it asks for no preconditions, does not require that we must be safe or fulfill certain rules, is not for an ex-clusive group, and does not threaten to leave us or remove this love if we fail to fulfill certain goals.

“Like” is what we do as humans. The word for this in the Greek language is “phileo”, which means to be a friend. This is a “conforming” love. It has lots of fun and care and humor and interaction. But behind it all is the assumption that we must be safe, live within the bounds of accepta-ble behavior, be a productive human being, have a lifestyle and manner-isms we can understand, and that a friend holds a person accountable. If not, we will exercise “tough love” which is our way of stating that we will stop liking them and their behavior.

Lent is the 40day exercise every year of God’s love being made clear to us. We need this clarity because our best intentions keep turning God’s love back into a “conforming” love that is only for people like us. This is our nature as human beings. Though God is clear about absolute love for all we hear what we want to hear and we warp it into what we like it to be. We need Lent to lead us back to the cross that God dies for us un-conditionally and for all who are undeserving.

That cross is very, very messy, even horrible! It is not safe, for it is God being falsely accused, condemned, and executed. It is both religious and political leaders condemning and crucifying Jesus and precisely because his behavior is out of bounds. That butchered body on the cross is God making absolutely clear to us how far and deep and complete is God’s love for all.

Lent is also the 40day exercise every year of God calling us into humili-ty. We need humility because conformity is so deep within us: “I can do it! I am loveable! I am right!” But because God’s standards are beyond what any of us can do we pick and choose out of God’s law what we like and conform it into our image of what a true Christian ought to believe, teach and do. We then torture both ourselves (guilt) and others (judgment) into conformity. In countless ways we insist people ought to think like us and be like us. If they don’t, we “unfriend” them on Face-Book. We expect our church to oppose them and their behavior. We even preach, to anyone who will listen, how people ought to conform to our thinking, political views, moral standards, and religious beliefs.

“I will never deny you, Jesus,” Peter declared and an hour later he did. “I am a Christian,” we inwardly insist, yet how quickly and emotionally we speak up when the church defends a cause we oppose or someone invites us to befriend a person whose lifestyle revolts us. We too, need to hear Jesus’ words to Peter. Lent is important to drive us into deep hu-mility where we confess our guilt and judgments and our insistence oth-ers conform to our views and allow all of our insistence on our own goodness and correctness to be nailed to the cross.

In the resurrection of Jesus, God raised forgiveness and love to be given to us and to all. This is not our doing but God’s. This is transformation in which we love and forgive based on God’s doing and not our own. Even deeper, in this resurrection we are sent to BE the BODY of CHRIST in the world by loving all people as Jesus loves us (John 13:34).

Lent makes this clear liking people is not enough. Getting people to conform to one correct understanding of morality, politics, and religious

From the Stewardship Committee

Therefore…Be Steadfast

Each year Christians look forward to the penitential season of Lent. That seems strange to some who don’t un-derstand the blessings this time affords. Among these is time set aside to focus on our own sins and then to place them purposefully at the foot of the cross, knowing that Christ has already paid the penalty in our place.

Another blessing arises from knowing that Lent is a period of time that culminates in Easter, that day the whole Christian Church rejoices together over the victory Christ won as He rose from the dead. His resurrection is ours! The Apostle Paul wrote, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:5657).

He followed this declaration with the word “therefore,” implying that something should happen as a result of this great victory: we should “be steadfast” We should be “immovable” We should “always [abound] in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).

As God’s people, we are “steadfast” and “immovable” as we rely on God’s strength. In the words of Paul to the people in Ephesus, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” (Ephesians 6:1013). God has fully equipped us, and He defends us. Through the faith that God gives us, we can place our total trust in Him to be with us as we face our battles.

Rejoicing in the victory that Jesus has won for us on the cross and through His resurrection, we keep our eyes on Him and remain steadfast. We do the work our Father has prepared for us to do, for we know our labor is not in vain. We are eager to live in Jesus’ victory.

Saturday, May 6. Saturday will be spent seeing the Greater Galilee neighborhood and their ministries from their per-spective and sharing in conversation and reflection at supper. After supper Pastor Sherrie Nelson Lorbeck (ordained at Grace in 2006) will share her story of ministry in the Milwaukee area (Cross of Life is lauded for its innercity ministry and its merging with another congregation to become “Unity Lutheran”). Options for overnight are at Sherrie’s church (nearby YMCA has showers) or a nearby motel.

The Sunday plan is to participate in their Sunday School and W orship and depart at 1:00. This is an amazing experience of their rich and deep tradition that is very alive on Sunday morning. Sunday School is a very im-portant part of it as all ages attend, and their worship will have as much greeting and welcome as Grace’s.

Both of our congregations and denominations are similar in size and also among the least diverse. The National Bap-tist Convention is as significantly AfricanAmerican as we are Northern EuropeanAmerican in ethnic background. More importantly both of us are healthy, dynamic, vibrant congregations deep in faith in Jesus and anchored in our tradition so that we can be enriched and renewed in this mutual relationship.

Watch the bulletin or call the church office to sign up for this rich and renewing faith experience.

(Continued from page 2) Greater Galilee Trip

beliefs has never, will never, and does not work. There is no correct and perfect church, people, or doctrine. God de-mands absolute, agape love for everyone in the whole world.

Humility is what Lent leads us into, but an allencompassing humility that includes all our views, beliefs, and actions. “I am saved only in Jesus” is what this Lenten humility realizes, “and there is no correct church, teaching, action, or belief to which I must conform which can save me.” Such humility opens us to listen to the stories of others, to con-stantly seek God to teach and change us more fully, and to keep growing in love true, deep agape love for all.

Such clear and humble love will drive us to seek out the stories, needs, and people who are not at all like me because especially there we learn and receive God’s transforming love. Our human nature is not only terribly uncomfortable doing that, people will aggressively dislike us when we love such people. Love like that is the hardest task to do and the most difficult reality to accept. Lent tells us clearly and with humility that’s what Jesus and love is all about.

Vigil of EasterSince Easter is late this year it gives us an opportunity to do the “Vigil of Easter” since this worship begins outside gathered around a fire. We will begin worship at the fire pit on the northwest corner of Grace’s property and bring the word hidden for all of Lent into the Sanctuary. By beginning at 7:00 the sun will be setting and it will be dark when we leave. As Wikipedia states:The Vigil of Easter is held in traditional Christian churches as the first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. Historically, it is during this service that people are baptized and that adult catechumens are received into full communion with the Church. It is held in the hours of darkness between sunset on Holy Saturday and sunrise on Easter Day – most commonly in the evening of Holy Saturday as the first celebration of Easter since days traditionally were considered to begin at sunset. Among liturgical western churches including the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and Lutheran churches, the Easter Vigil is the most important service of public worship of the liturgical year, marked by the first use since the beginning of Lent of the exclamatory "Alleluia", a distinctive feature of the Easter season.

Grace Lutheran Council March Meeting MinutesDate: March 20, 2017

Council in attendance: Sandy Wick, Mark Gaedtke, Keri Kelley, Luann Kiander, Brandon Hafeman, Lucas Tjugum,Missing: Bill Zorr, Don Narloch, Mary Wessel, Ken KincaidOther Attendees: Shirley Derleth (through treasurer’s report), Pastor Mark Meeting called to order at 6:06 pm. Devotions: • We prayed for Bill Zorr who was having surgery today. Mark then enlightened us with a devotion which fo-

cused on choosing God over the law; example Pope Francis washed women’s feet as well as nonCatholic’s feet as he choose God over what was the custom.

Where have we seen God at work?• The changing weather; Buck Derleth’s response to attending Via de Cristo; a gentlemen walking back into

Grace after being away 50 years; having silence in prayer.

Approve Agenda• Sandy made a motion to amend the agenda by adding Marcia Sattelberg after the consent agenda. Keri sec-

ond. Motion passed. Agenda was approved.

Consent Agenda• Motion made by Sandy to approve the consent agenda which consisted of February council minutes, February

Strategic Planning Group Report, and February Mission Culture Report. Seconded by Brandon. Motion passed.

Organists Marcia Sattelberg• Music Worship Committee has not met since November and there is a need to get an additional organist. We

currently do not have an organist scheduled the first weekend in May, all of November, and potentially most of June.

• Laurie Schmidt may be able to play 1 weekend a month. Paula Norman is helping out during Lent• We also have very few pianists and they mainly play during the contemporary weekend. • Council will be posting an opening in the bulletin for either an organist or a pianist. If there is no response by

next council meeting, we will post in the paper. Mark will write up the posting for both the bulletin and Good News newsletter and send to Debbie. He will also send a note to Karen to post in the announcements. The standard fee is $42.80 for 1 service, $80.00 for 2 services, and 122.80 for all 3 services. Many of our organists volunteer their time.

Treasurer's Report (Shirley) • Shirley highlighted that the D3 Dinner net almost $8000 which was paid towards the principle with the

March payment. February special offering went to the ELCA World Hunger. So far in the year, our income has exceeded our expenses by $1,818.40; however we are $8,342.29 below our budget.

• Brandon moved to accept the treasurer report. Sandy seconded. Motion passed.

Committee and staff reports • Pastor Mark’s report highlighted • The strategical planning group meeting was held end of February• The mission culture team will be planning the spring Congregation Retreat• Pastor signed up for the certification on Faith Formation in 21st Century in which the goal is to develop events

or ministries at Grace that effectively form and deepen faith. Each of us is invited to attend his presentations at the end of the four month study.

• Handout from PZ regarding “God’s Work Our Hands”• There was a request from Julie Dentler regarding updating the Confirmation photos in the hall by the Kitchen

and moving these pictures to a standing form which after placing the current pictures, still would allow for about 28 more years of pictures.

• There were no objections to this; however the question was raised by Sandy on where we would put this so it could still be viewable

• Luann will reach out to Julie to find out where it is planned to be located and will let council know. (Continued on page 10)

• Keri brought up that it would be nice to scan these pictures as long as we are taking them down and insuring we get a digital copy of them

Old Business

1. Church use policy Pastor and staff are working on outlining a policy regarding use of church properties No update

2. Director of confirmation job description and postingDiscussions in progress within the staff. This will be discussed when Wendy returns.

3. SMART goals for 2017 Update.

Goal 1: Increase the diversity of our membership in our ministries• Luann and Sandy attended the Strategic Planning meeting on February 23 and shared their thoughts

for a Ministry Fair weekend. The weekend of April 2930 was selected. Eighteen letters were sent out last Wednesday, March 15 to each ministry lead. A planning meeting is set up for Tuesday April 4th at 6:00 with the ministry leads. An article will also be put in the April Good News as well as in the bulle-tin.

Goal 2: Spread the Grace of God through communication and covert good deeds. • Mark/Bill Have not been able to discuss this more, but Mark and Keri were able to discuss making

the box for the covert good deeds as the first step.

Goal 3: Enhance the worship service experience at Grace Lutheran Church.• Mary/Billfirst step is to meet with worship committee and this has not been done yet.

New Business

1. Need to find two members of congregation to accompany PZ and Marie Stark to Synod Assembly on May 1920 in Green Bay. • Brandon or his wife may be interested in attending this session. • This will be discussed at the next meeting again

2. Need two new members for the nominating committee. We have four and we need six.• Persons elected at the annual meeting include Cathy Schmit, Brian Schmidt, Helene Hoglund, and Marie

Stark. A motion was made to nominate Tom Stone and Marilyn Smith to the nominating committee. Se-conded by Brandon. Motion passed.

• Pastor Mark will contact the nominating committee before the next council meeting so they can start looking for a youth representative as Lucas would like to step down before the end of the school year as he will be graduating

3. GLOW neglected to list transportation cost to expense account. (Mark)• There is a change in the billing for the transportation cost for busing the youth to the GLOW program

from after school. • In past years, the cost of this service was $130 a year as Father John volunteered his time to drive bus.

Since Father John is no longer in the community, Grace will need to pay the entire cost for this service (if someone if willing to drive the bus, this cost would be reduced)

• The cost for this is $33.85 per week and equates to about $1000 a year. There is currently $261.00 in the After School Program budget which can be used for partial payment of this.

• We discussed potentially using funds from Undesignated to cover this. Since Shirley left prior to this dis-cussion, this will be added to next month’s agenda to see if there is any objection to using this fund or if there is another fund which can be used

4. Easter breakfast has needed council member help in the past. Wilderness group has taken it recently but they are not sure how many will be in Tomahawk on Easter.

• Margie has offered to help coordinate this• Many of the Wilderness group will be gone that weekend potential that maybe 7 could help • Luann and Mark indicated they would be able to help that weekend

5. Approval of Mission Culture’s plan for 2017 Congregation Retreat (Pastor Mark or representative from Mis-sion Culture Team).

• This was approved as part of the consent agenda

Public Comments: None

Future Meetings, Events and Dates to Remember: Next council Meeting, Monday April 17th at 6 pm. Discussed that if we move to 3rd Monday of the month, we need to get the minutes out sooner especially during the months of March, June, August and November as these Mondays fall late in the month.

Congregation Retreat Saturday April 229:00 am 1:00 pm at Grace

This retreat will be personally beneficial for you, your relationships, attitude, mission, and life, and will also bene-fit Grace and our mission in Tomahawk and beyond. Many of the changes and happenings in our culture and the church in this 21st Century we may not like, but a key blessing in this century is that the church is directly ad-dressing and growing are our relationships, faith, and mission and making it relevant, practical and rich in our personal lives.

This retreat will build on our strengths in our personal lives and as a congregation. Pastor Jean DeVollDonaldson and Darlene Kalfahs from our East Central Synod of Wisconsin will lead this retreat as they did in 2015. They will use a tool called “assetmapping” which they have been trained in and have perfected. It is a valu-able activity for helping people increase an attitude of abundance, see God’s resourcing in new ways, and consider how the gifts and blessings of people might come together in new ways that might not be as readily considered without the prompt of this work. The input and involvement of youth is very helpful in this activity.

We are blessed! Circumstances in and around us distract us from seeing that. This retreat will guide, lead, and give us time to reflect on our blessings. Counting our blessings improves our attitude. When we link those bless-ings great things are possible in our individual lives, homes, relationships, congregation and living in God’s mis-sion.

HymnalsInspired by this year’s emphasis on worship and praising God, the Worship Committee wishes to pursue use of the cranberry Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) Hymnal to bring new opportunities to enhance our worship. You can sponsor a hymnal for $22.50. If you wish your gift to be in memory or honor of someone, please indicate that on your envelope see the specially designated envelopes in the Gathering Area. This infor-mation will be shown on a book tag on the hymnal’s inside cover.
