HELPFUL INFORMATION Welcome to worship at Faith Lutheran Church. Everything you need to follow the service is in the bulletin. Hymns can be found in the red hymnal in the pews; the corresponding hymn numbers are in the upper corners of each page. Please take a moment to fill out the information card found in the pew rack. Please place the card in the offering plate so we can be in touch with you. Prayer requests to be offered during worship can be written on the card in the pew rack and passed toward the center aisle where it will be collected by an usher during the first hymn. There are coffee and treats in the Library after the 8:00 service and downstairs in the Fellowship Hall after the 10:30 service. We would love to join you in fellowship time together. Restrooms are located on the far side of the Library or down the main stairs. Feel free to explore the building and ask questions of the pastors, ushers, or anyone you see! We encourage you to introduce yourselves and hope you feel comfortable here. Children are welcome and highly encouraged to be in worship. We understand that children have the need to move and make sound. We find this to be a joyful and important part of worship. Blessing Bags are found near both entrances of sanctuary filled with activities for children. A cry room is available at the back of the sanctuary should you need a brief respite. Child care is offered at the 10:30 service in the nursery downstairs. Please be sure to sign your child in. Children are encouraged to come forward for the children’s sermon during worship. If they would then like to go to the nursery, they will then be led downstairs by a child care leader. Sunday School, Adult Education, Confirmation, and High School meet 9:15-10:15am on Sundays in various parts of the church. Please ask if you are unsure of where these areas meet. All are welcome!

Faith Lutheran Church is a lively, caring, and energetic community.

We are so glad you are here!

INTRODUCTION TO TODAY’S GOSPEL Though the word trinity is not found in the scriptures, today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. In the gospel Jesus sends his

disciples forth to baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in word and sacrament, as we profess the creed, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

CHILDREN’S SERMON First Reading: Genesis 1:1--2:4a This first creation story reached its current form during the crisis of the Babylonian exile of the people of Israel. God, not their captors’ god Marduk, was responsible for their existence. God created women and men as rulers over creation, to preserve and protect it. God also rested on the seventh day, hallowing that day forever as the Sabbath. 1In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. 6And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. 8God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day. 9And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. 12The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good. 13And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

14And God said, “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, 18to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day. 20And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” 21So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 24And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind.” And it was so. 25God made the wild animals of the earth of every kind, and the cattle of every kind, and everything that creeps upon the ground of every kind. And God saw that it was good. 26Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” 27So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” 29God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. 2:1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude. 2And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation. 4aThese are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. R: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Paul closes a challenging letter to the Corinthians with an appeal to Christian fellowship grounded in the triune harmony of Christ’s grace, God’s love, the Spirit’s partnership. [Paul writes:] 11Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. 13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. R: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Please stand as you are able. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the 28th chapter. C: Speak Lord, your servants are listening. Gospel Reading: Matthew 28:16-20 After his resurrection, Jesus summons his remaining disciples and commissions them to baptize and teach all nations in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Please be seated. SERMON Please stand as you are able. HYMN OF THE DAY #412 Come, Join the Dance of Trinity AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: ATHANASIAN CREED P: With the whole body of believers in God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit eternal, let us confess our faith... C: Whoever wants to be saved

should above all cling to the catholic faith. Whoever does not guard it whole and inviolable

will doubtless perish eternally.

Page 9: Sunday, June 11 2017 Holy Trinity - Constant Contactfiles.constantcontact.com/f2335a6b201/4e6e174b-797c-44fa... · 2017-06-07 · Sunday, June 11 2017 Holy Trinity Service of the

Now this is the catholic faith: We worship one God in trinity

and the Trinity in unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the divine being.

For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Spirit is still another.

But the deity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory, coeternal in majesty.

What the Father is, the Son is, and so is the Holy Spirit.

Uncreated is the Father; uncreated is the Son; uncreated is the Spirit.

The Father is infinite; the Son is infinite; the Holy Spirit is infinite.

Eternal is the Father; eternal is the Son; eternal is the Spirit:

And yet there are not three eternal beings, but one who is eternal;

as there are not three uncreated and unlimited beings, but one who is uncreated and unlimited.

Almighty is the Father; almighty is the Son; almighty is the Spirit:

And yet there are not three almighty beings, but one who is almighty.

Thus the Father is God; the Son is God; the Holy Spirit is God:

And yet there are not three gods, but one God.

Thus the Father is Lord; the Son is Lord; the Holy Spirit is Lord:

And yet there are not three lords, but one Lord.

As Christian truth compels us to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord,

so catholic religion forbids us to say that there are three gods or lords.

Page 10: Sunday, June 11 2017 Holy Trinity - Constant Contactfiles.constantcontact.com/f2335a6b201/4e6e174b-797c-44fa... · 2017-06-07 · Sunday, June 11 2017 Holy Trinity Service of the

The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten;

the Son was neither made nor created, but was alone begotten of the Father;

the Spirit was neither made nor created, but is proceeding from the Father and the Son.

Thus there is one Father, not three fathers; one Son, not three sons; one Holy Spirit, not three spirits.

And in this Trinity, no one is before or after, greater or less than the other;

but all three persons are in themselves, coeternal and coequal; and so we must worship the Trinity in unity and the one God in three persons.

Whoever wants to be saved should think thus about the Trinity. It is necessary for eternal salvation that one also faithfully believe

that our Lord Jesus became flesh. For this is the true faith that we believe and confess:

That our Lord Jesus Christ, God's Son, is both God and man.

He is God, begotten before all worlds from the being of the Father,

and he is man, born in the world from the being of his mother—

existing fully as God, and fully as man with a rational soul and a human body;

equal to the Father in divinity, subordinate to the Father in humanity.

Although he is God and man, he is not divided, but is one Christ.

He is united because God has taken humanity into himself; he does not transform deity into humanity.

He is completely one in the unity of his person, without confusing his natures.

For as the rational soul and body are one person, so the one Christ is God and man.

He suffered death for our salvation. He descended into hell

and rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. At his coming all people shall rise bodily

to give an account of their own deeds. This is the catholic faith.

LIVING LOCAL UPDATES

Our congregation has been participating a new initiative in our synod called Living Local. We are excited for what we will learn! One way to think about Living Local is as a place for us to discover and live into God's call where we might join God among our neighbors.

We are beginning the next steps of connecting with our neighborhood on Sunday, June 18th

with a Neighborhood Listening Walk after our 9:15 service.

This is the first Sunday that we are worshiping together as one community and we think it will be a great chance to connect and engage with someone you might not know as we take a look at the community around us. We will gather in small groups and take a 15-20 minute walk through our immediate neighborhood to see what catches our attention. Who is out on the street? What makes you curious? What surprises you? We will have fellowship snacks "on the go" and members of the guiding team will be around to answer questions. There will also be opportunities to take listening walks during different times of the month if you cannot make it on Sundays. We will have question sheets available in the narthex throughout the summer that you can fill out as you walk around and return to us. Please be in touch with any questions! We are looking forward to connecting in this process with all members and friends of the congregation. All are welcome to join us and share their perspectives!
