APRIL 2016

In 8th grade History class, Mrs. McManus has been teaching the students about our federal government and the buildings they will see on their visit to Washington D.C.

The students began their trip at Mt. Vernon, George Washington’s home, touring the mansion, grounds, tomb, and museum. They visited several memorials: WWII, Lincoln, Vietnam War, Korean War, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Jefferson. The students were given

a guided tour of the Capitol and took a group picture on the steps outside the House of Representatives. Several of the Smithsonian Museums were toured: Art, Natural Science, American History, Air and Space, and Holocaust. Some of the students visited Ford's Theater and the National Archives. At the Arlington Cemetery, they toured the Kennedy Grave and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where they saw the ceremony of the Changing of the

Guard. Four of our students participated in a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on behalf of the 8th Grade of High Point Christian Academy (Ben Thomas, Elizabeth Boger, Isabella Kiefer, and Jenna Harper). Click to see a photo gallery.

Festival Disney Awards for Outstanding Performances The HPCA Band and Choir spring competition was held in Walt Disney World, Florida, this year. The Concert Band, Jazz Band, Concert Choir, and Women's Ensemble performed at separate venues during their stay, each participating in a clinic following their performance and adjudication. Clinicians included leading music professors from around the country. The trip also provided stress relief, with students having fun at Hollywood Studios, Disney Springs, and the Magic Kingdom! The Festival Disney Awards Ceremony was held on the final day in Typhoon Lagoon, with HPCA students making us proud:

Brandon and Anita Ware

Jake Sloop, Eagle Scout, pictured with his father

Senior Jake Sloop achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on March 13 at the Court of Honor held at First Baptist Church in High Point. His project was the construction of shelves for the food pantry at West End Ministries. Jake is a member of Troop 42 at Covenant Church and will attend East Carolina University in the fall.

Grayson Holland

Grayson fulfilled his senior KIP (Kommunity Impact Project) project by organizing a celebration for veterans, “A Tribute to Sacrifice.” He invited special guests and performed with the HPCA Jazz Band at River Landing Retirement Community. Click here to see the program.

@pastorware and on his Facebook page, with the current hashtag #TrustingGod.

Pastor Brandon grew up in the mountains of western North Carolina. His father led him to faith in Jesus Christ. Early in his young life, he remembers having a strong desire to serve God with his life in some capacity. Over the last 14 years, he has endeavored to be faithful to His calling upon his life and to make much of His glorious name.

In 2003, Brandon and Anita were married. “Aside from my personal salvation, she is without a doubt the greatest blessing in my life. I am truly grateful for the wonderful family that the Lord has blessed me with.”

God has given Brandon a pastor’s heart - one called and gifted by God to equip the saints for the work of the ministry. He has been a pastor for nearly 11 years, having served three SBC churches in North Carolina.

“My passion is preaching and teaching, winning the lost to faith in Christ, training leaders, and equipping the body of Christ for the

work of the ministry. As D.L. Moody once said, ‘The world has yet to see what God can do with one man who is completely sold out to

Him.’ By the grace of God, I long to be that man.”

Brandon and Anita Ware came to Green Street Baptist Church in November, 2013, to serve as the Senior Pastor, along with their children, Allie and Andrew. With each passing month, they have become more immersed in ministry and in serving. While both children attend HPCA, Anita serves in the media ministry, helps to lead iHeart Fitness, and plays the French horn in the GSBC orchestra. Pastor Brandon, who is studying Expository Preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, regularly posts his sermon notes on his website upwardway.org. He encourages discipleship through his posts on Twitter

Sue Ashby

How does a 2014 HPCA graduate (and LIFER), who describes most of her years at HPCA as "not too interested in the whole God-thing," end up as a missionary in Australia for two years? Her story is filled with twists and turns and is rich with God's mercy and love, as Stephanie Bartlett learned that this "God-thing" is all about grace and adventure.

Stephanie leaves in June to head to Townsville, Australia, for a two-year commitment with Youth With a Mission (YWAM). During that time, Stephanie will have a full-time (volunteer) job in the YWAM youth office, as well as studying for two years to earn a C4CM, (Certificate IV in Christian Missions). She will spend her time in Australia ministering on high school campuses, and helping plan and host Youth Street Live on Saturday nights, pouring into the lives of Aussie youth. Having already served in Townsville for 6 months Stephanie can hardly wait to return!

While at HPCA, Stephanie watched her family make many sacrifices to provide her a Christian education. She experienced divorce in her home and struggled with anxiety and depression. By thirteen years old, Stephanie was clinically diagnosed with depression, fell heavily into the "party scene", and brought herself to serious self-harm. Struggling with mental and physical problems at such a young age, her world seemed very dark.

During Stephanie's sophomore and junior years, she began having experiences with God where He seemed to be answering her cries for help. As she described that period in her life, Stephanie stated with conviction, "I learned John 10:10, simply that the enemy is out to steal, kill, and destroy, or to render you useless. But that God loved me from the beginning and wanted to bless me with abundant life. A life full of laughter, adventure, romance, grace, and friendship more than everything we can begin to imagine. For the first time, the gospel became personal and I found the peace that comes from

knowing Jesus Christ." Stephanie continued, "People sometimes think that you obey therefore you are accepted; I believe that God accepts you and loves you therefore you have a desire to obey Him! Because of His great love! The question isn't ‘Does He love me if I follow His rules?’ He already loved you, that part is taken care of. The question is simply, ‘How much of Him are you willing to receive and how much of yourself are you willing to give?’"

From the looks of it --- a lot! In just a few months, Stephanie will be serving in an area of Australia where the suicide rate is high and living is hard. She will be working with high school students there and, as she says, "sharing the simplicity of the gospel." She is currently raising support to help her serve a two-year term and then see what God has next. Through all of life's lessons so far, Stephanie says, "I have learned the beauty of grace, real raw love, and freedom, and that abundant life means a life much more than 'all'. Whenever I finally gave everything to Jesus, He radically changed the direction of my life and is taking me on a wild adventure." Pray for Stephanie and feel free to encourage her at [email protected], as she leaves home and family and tries to help others experience the amazing grace of our God.

This summer, she will be joining her husband who has been working in the Greenville area since January at Park Seed, and she looks forward to finding another niche to minister and impact young children for Christ. HPCA will greatly miss her but she will always be in our prayers. Sue hopes to be back to visit while her grandson is attending HPCA next year.

Sue has been married to her husband Scott for almost 33 years and has four grown, married children and five precious grandchildren. She and her husband have taught young married couples at Green Street for many years and enjoyed mentoring them. Her short-term Kenya mission trips to teach Bible School are especially dear to her heart. In her spare time she enjoys running and being with her family.

Sue is completing her seventeenth year of teaching second grade at HPCA. She considers it a blessing to be surrounded by such supportive, godly staff and parents each day and be able to teach in a Christ centered environment!

“This school’s influence will forever leave an imprint on my heart long after I leave and will impact all future teaching endeavors.”

Our Annual Grandparents' Day was a resounding success with the children's musical, "King of the Jungle," and our classrooms and hallways filled with the energy and love that happens between grandchildren and their grandparents. With so many Meemaws and Pappaws, Gigis and PaPas, and Nanas and Pas on our campus, we treasure this special day and the relationship we have with that "grand" generation.

High Point Christian Academy is grateful to many business and community supporters who helped make our 2016 Online Auction a resounding success. Our Auction would not have been possible without your generous support. With your help, we met our goal for Online Auction proceeds of $15,000! Thank you!

Describing himself as quiet and shy – “not really a people person” – Bam Adebayo and his mom moved to North Carolina from New Jersey so Bam could be closer to his cousins and other family. The nickname Bam came along when he picked up a coffee table at the age of one and reminded his family of the strong toddler in The Flintstones, Bamm-Bamm. When his cousins were playing basketball, Bam would agree to play along “because they needed an extra man.” Although Bam’s mom describes Bam as “a fat baby – short and fat,” at around 3rd or 4th grade, Bam started noticing how he was getting taller and his friends weren’t! Later, Bam started playing AAU basketball and met his good friend, Ty Graves. Since Bam’s mom had to work on Sundays, they were unable to attend church. However, while in middle school, Bam’s computer teacher, Coach M, invited Bam to get involved in CCYC (Church of Christ Youth Camp). Bam found a home church in Bath, NC, and began to experience spiritual growth, along with a good friend, Joshua. When asked about the Christian atmosphere at HPCA, Bam acknowledged, “We pray on the team, and when we pray, we really pray! Another thing that means a lot to me is seeing the cross on the basketball court every time we practice and play here.”

Leadership is not as familiar to Bam as some may think. Bam describes it like this: “I always looked up to other people; I see myself as a teammate. This year, our team helped me feel like a leader. It took me a long time to see myself that way. I know it takes everyone on the team --- I’m not going to have my best game every game.” Bam has noticed that teachers at HPCA may seem strict, but they care about their students. They prepare you for college. Still, he admits his favorite part of the school day is lunch, when he can hang out with friends. As Bam prepares to graduate and become a Kentucky Wildcat, he calls this time “bittersweet.” In his words, “It is sweet because

I get to play at the University of Kentucky, and I am able to go on a scholarship. But it is also bitter, since I’m leaving HPCA and I don’t know what people will be like there.” Until then, Bam plans to attend summer school, play a little pick-up, and work on his basketball skills. He’s pretty sure he’ll always remember his favorite hashtags from basketball seasons here: #studentsection and #freethezoo, saying, “The fans always pumped me up. I really appreciate them.”
