The Gospel at St. David's Church

The Mission of St. David's is to follow Jesus, loving our neighbors as ourselves, without exception.

April 2016Reflection from Father Samuel...

We are in Eastertide; we are in The Great Fifty Days. The season of Easter isactually a celebration of 50 days, from Easter until Pentecost. The word Pentecostmeans fiftieth and is the Greek rendering of the Hebrew word Shavuot. all services throughout the 50 days until Pentecost, at the end of the Easter season. I hope this will be a time of new life and resurrection for all of us at St. David's - inlife, faith and strength for visioning ahead together. May we spend this month in joy, caring for one another and finding ways to invite our neighbors to the table ofcelebration. Just ask, you may just be surprised. Consider these words from theGreat Saint of the church, Augustine of Hippo: "Now we urge you to praise God.That is what we are alltelling each otherwhen we say 'Alleluia'.But see that you praise Godnot with your lipsand voices alone, but with your minds, your livesand all your actions." Easter blessings to you all, my family in faith. Fr. Jason W. Samuel

Wow! Forty days of Lent. Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, HolySaturday, the Great Vigil of Easter and Easter Day with all the great musicof the season. Thanks to the choir, the instrumental ensemble and ourguest musicians for a tremendous Easter Day celebration. But, nowwhat happens? We've got 50 more days of the Easter season before weget to the Feast Day of Pentecost. To what do we look forward in themusic department? Well, for starters, there is an abundance of greathymns for all of us to sing. There will be Sundays of contemporarymusic. I've asked the choir to pick out some of their favorite anthemsthat have been done in the past. We, as a congregation, finally have theopportunity to sing the "Gloria" again and some of our favorite liturgicalsettings of music for the Eucharist. So, music never stops here at St.David's. We look forward to more concerts this season as well. All inall, it's going to be a tremendous month of April and continue right onthrough the summer months. Thank you to our Parish of St. David'scongregation for your support and kind remarks about our music. Itmeans a lot to the choir and our instrumentalists. We look forward toserving you as faithfully as ever for a long time. There's always room formore voices and instruments in our program. Take a music brochurefrom the table, share it with someone new and invite them to join us onour journey into the future. It's a great ride!

WHY A NAME TAG - A PERSONAL STORY.

Why do we have name tags at church? Don't we all know each other? The answer is we don't, and equally important others may notknow us. As one who has been very lax about wearing myname tag I have come to realize my poor memory atremembering names continues to get worse and there are anynumber of people I see on Sunday I can say hello to, but

whom I cannot call by name. Even people sitting next to me, or nearby, are stillnameless. For my sake, and for others including yourself, please consider wearingyour name tag on Sundays. If you never had one, misplaced one or for any otherreason, if you attend Sunday services on a regular basis ("member" or not), sign upfor and wear your tag so I may be able to get to know you better. Contact the

church office or any Sunday usher. Thanks. Bob Shaw, Junior Warden

Huge thanks to all of you, from preteens to those in your 90s, who wrotea Lenten meditation for our booklet this year. Taking that time to go backto the Source and spending some quiet time with God, to meditate andconnect Scripture with your heart and dreams, and your life as it istoday, and then to share your lives with us is, we think, one of the highpoints of our journey together at St David's. We hope you think so too.Much love in the Risen Christ: Louise Buck, Melinda Murdock, andJanet Shaw

The MaryMagdalene

Chapter

This was a busy month for the DOK. At our regular gathering we did a specialversion of the Stations of the Cross in the sanctuary, then we continued ourdiscussion of our study book, Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus.

On March 12th we hosted a wonderful DOK Quiet Day for all the women in thediocese. We had about 40 women and they were inspired by Lynn Neu'spresentation on "Spiritual Practices for the 21st Century." She had some greatideas and she gave us time to experience Centering Prayer and other practices. She also gave us a handout with some helpful resources that can be found online. Our chapter graciously welcomed the women for refreshments and lunch andJamie Wood made lovely flower arrangements.

The Quiet Day included an inspiring Taize Service with our diocesan DOKChaplain, the Rev. Maryanne Lacey, leading us. The service featured beautifulpiano music by Debby Park, scripture, and prayers, including the following by theRev. Susan Gregg-Schroeder:Loving God, how we yearn for you. Deep inside we desire to know that you loveand accept us just as we are. We seek release from our past mistakes and regretsand the opportunity to move beyond the hurt and the pain of our lives. We look fordirection, for signs, for your leadings and guidance for the important decisions weare faced with each day. Yes, we yearn to really know you, for you are our God andwe are your people. Our next Diocesan DOK event will be our Spring Assembly at St. James on May21st from 9:00-1:00.

The new member training is underway for Shirley Culver, Ruth Woolery, RoseannMyers, and Karen Benedict. One of our sessions was held at Chris Timmins' homeand she and Margaret England, our parish DOK chaplain, added valuable insightsto our discussion.

Our next DOK chapter gathering will be on Monday, April 4th at the home of Chris

Monthly Models of FaithMartin Luther King, Jr.Remembered on April 4Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to the Reverend MartinLuther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. He was the middle child of three, withan older sister and a younger brother. Martin Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott Kingwere the parents of four children. Following extensive studies in sociologyand theology, Martin received the Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from BostonUniversity in 1955. Dr. King was the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church inMontgomery, Alabama from the mid- to the late-1950s. He then foundedand directed the activities of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference inAtlanta, Georgia.

Dr. King held a variety of leadership roles and received numerous awards-including the Nobel Prize for Peace-and was perhaps the central figure in theAmerican Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated inApril of 1968. What is less well known, and certainly less publicized is that in Juneof 1974, some 6 years after the death of her son, King's mother, Alberta WilliamsKing was also shot and killed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta as she satat the organ. "Again, through an act of violence, there ended a life that was totallynonviolent, a life that was thoroughly Christian, a life that reflected love for allpersons and unselfish service to humankind" (The King Center). Together, Martinand his mother are models to us all of Christian life and livelihood in the face of itsmost challenging opponents.

The Morning Prayer reading on the day I began this article, about the rich man whowanted to prove to Jesus how wonderful he was, comes in the Gospel story justbefore Jesus' final entry into Jerusalem. The guy was righteous. He was rich. He'ddone everything just right - according to the rules and rubrics. So what's next,Jesus? What now? Jesus' answer was the same one that I heard when I first gotsober: "You only have to change one thing," they said. "Everything." "When heheard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had manypossessions." He had it all and he was supposed to give it away!? For what?

Jesus went on to tell that others, who were as nonplussed as was the man in thestory, that it is easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for arich person get into God's kingdom. One of my friend's is fond of saying that whenyou're in the presence of paradox, you know you are in the presence of God. Andhere we are, squarely in the Presence.

That day was also the feast of Saint Patrick. Legend has it that he taught about thethe Holy Trinity, the Three-in-One and One-in-Three, by showing the peoplegathered a three leaf clover. Showing them. No complexity here, no need tointellectualize, to theorize, just taking the things of earth, as Jesus did, and showingus what is beyond, what is within, what is. The greatest mystery is contained in themost everyday of things. And so often, we wander away grieving, because of ourmany possessions - our intellectual prowess, our rational, scientific, reasonablemind. In the end, our self-sufficiency our self-importance and self-righteousnessisolates us, divides us from others, and from God. We are at the beginning of Holy Week as I finish this up.When you read this we willbe on the other side of that great chasm and the whole month of Alleluia's in front ofus. Life will have flowed out of the grave, victory from defeat. hope from despair.

Recently I put up a sign outside in the entryway of myhome. It says BEACH with an arrow underneath. In thatlocation it does point to the beach. Especially when I amheading out, I see it and am reminded that the beach is thataway and that I should go. I so seldom do. I showed aphotograph of it to Sister Electa, who went into theCarmelite monastery the year I was born. She took it andexpanded it to be an invitation to go down to the Sea, intothe very life of God. Using the everyday things of earth, things that which we can see and touch sidestepping themind, and, as Jesus did, showing us the Mystery what is

beyond, what is within, what is.

Now every time I walk out the door I am reminded silently, unequivocally that I aminvited onto the beach, and into the Sea, invited to go down and stand on the shoreas the Risen Lord stood and fed his disciples with barbecued fish, showing them, not merely telling them, that, astoundingly, he was alive and with them still. The Lord is risen indeed, alleluia.

Jr. Daughters of the King

On March 13th the girls gathered for lunch anddevotions relating to Lent. They also made peanutbutter sandwiches and cookies for 40 people. PhilLoveless invited us to prepare this food so he coulddistribute it on Palm Sunday to a group of homelessguests who attend a "Welcome Church" service in a

park in El Cajon. According to the priest at St. Alban's who sponsorsthis project, "Welcome Church" includes a Eucharist service followedby lunch where all who gather there are encouraged to break breadtogether. He points out that breaking bread together, not just at thecommunion table, is all part of being "church." Thanks to Anna,Angelina, Evie, Anne Kellett and Leslie for help with this project. For devotions we read the inspiring Lenten Meditation Anna wrote aboutcalling on God when we are in trouble (Psalm 120). She wrote that sheturned to God in prayer when she hurt her foot. As she said, "This psalmtells me that whenever I need God's help I can pray to him/her for an answer to myproblem or healing for an illness or injury."We also read a meditation on Matthew 25:35,40 that says: "For I washungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, astranger and you welcomed me." We discussed the fact that even smallacts of kindness for others can fall into these categories. As the authorsaid, "Remember...how near you are to Jesus when you do these things."We related this scripture lesson to the food the girls prepared for the

Preschool......

With spring comes new growth and the same ishappening here at St. David's Preschool! Our preschoolis officially filled to full capacity 2 days per week! Withthe increased number of children, it has been necessaryto also increase our teaching team. Ms. Dina Madrugaand Ms. Mary Ann Michlanski joined the afternoon teama month ago and bring many passions and skills with

them. Ms. Dina also teaches the Motion & Me music and movementprogram at various preschools (at St. David's too!) each morning. Ms.Mary Ann works at another local preschool and joins us two days a weekwhile Ms. Nikki leaves early to take more college courses toward herdegree! Our newest hire is Ms. Aneisha Daughtery as a substituteteacher. We will see her a lot this Spring break time while our longerterm teachers take some much deserved time off to spend with theirchildren and families.

Growing gardens is a fun spring time activity and our PACrepresentative Lynn Nicholson will be helping the teachers learn moreabout fun and easy gardening tips. Our first goal is to grow somelettuce and carrots so we can have fresh produce for our pet rabbitsSnowy and Glitter! We have started some spring cleaning projects andour rabbits were good bunnies and got a new upscale hutch and newfencing for a much larger enclosure area. If you get a chance, hop ondown and visit us at the preschool!
