Competition – Water, Water Everywhere; Challenge – Seeing Red
Taken last month during the
Union Bay field trip, Diana
Pohl spent time shooting the
Union Bay Post Office, one
of her favorite local build-
ings. Diana loves photo-
graphing architecture -
while others headed to the
trails along the creek and
through the forest to the
coal fields and the coast,
Diana headed straight to this
beloved building to capture
it from many angles. Not her
first time shooting the post
office, Diana was very partial
to having the opportunity to
capture it again. Thanks
Diana!
April 2015 - Volume 4, Issue 4
Here’s a smile we’re all familiar with - Gladys Dawson, always upbeat, smil-
ing, and forever positive! The club was shone upon when Gladys first be-
come a member over 3 years ago. Gladys followed hubby, Peter Sinclair, to
the club, and like Peter, Gladys delved right into several volunteer position
within the CVPS: Social Committee for two years and Greeter and Coordi-
nator for two years. The club provides the social aspect that Gladys loves -
spending time with friends who enjoy the art of photography like her.
Gladys is also partial to the educational opportunities that the CVPS pro-
vides each month - she loves to always learn about one of her favorite past
times - photography.
Gladys sports an
accent that sug-
gests east coast
roots. Born in
Harbour Breton,
Nfld., her family relocated to St. John’s when Gladys was
15 years old. After growing up in Newfoundland, Gladys
lived in Calgary, Halifax, Kitchener, and Waterloo before
her and Peter moved to the Comox Valley four years ago.
Gladys came to photography at the young age of eight -
perhaps younger. Gladys funded her first camera - a
Brownie Box, by selling greeting cards door-to-door! I
cannot imagine many, if any at all saying ‘No’ to this
pretty little blonde selling cards at their door! At that
time Gladys practiced her photography on her little
brother as well as on scenery. By the time Gladys was 21
she had retired the Brownie Box and was shooting with
a manual Minolta SLR along with a small point and
shoot. Seven years ago Gladys set down her film cameras
and graduated to the digital age - today she shoots with
an Olympus EM-5.
Gladys is moved to photograph street photography,
mainly people - she loves to capture the expressions and
emotions of the people she encounters on the streets!
She also loves to photograph the in-fashions, recording
what is currently hip! However, her favorite subject to
photograph is her grandchildren - simply the greatest
joys of her life! Her photos have caught the eye of others;
Gladys has sold three of her prints to date!
Gladys spent many years as an administrator in an ar-
ray of areas: oil industry; medical and dental offices
and boutiques. Prior to retirement Gladys worked in
marketing.
Now retired, Gladys enjoys photography as well as
knitting, reading, cycling, walking, and traveling! She
also dedicates a lot of her time as a volunteer - two
hospital departments, Sid Williams Theatre, and the
Filberg Lodge. Gladys additionally devotes time help-
ing others in any way she can.
Gladys is like a ray of sunshine wherever she goes - her
broad smile and buoyant personality are one-of-a-kind.
It has been such a pleasure to write about Gladys this
month and to call her a friend! ~ JMM

Looks as though Tracy Pick-
ton got up - close and per-
sonal with this beauty - that
or he has a really great lens!
These are by far my fav birds
- so prehistoric in appear-
ance. Lately there has been a
heron swooping down into
the pond on the farm where
all the ducks and geese are -
the birds make quite the
commotion when he comes
to visit! Love this one Tracy -
a stellar shot!
Cumberland is...well, FUNKY! And
this FUNKY shot inside the ’Patch’
clothing store by Bill Turnbull is in-
dicative of just some of the FUNKI-
NESS of Cumberland! I heard the
’Cumberland Merchant March’ last
month was an excellent outing with
several members taking part and en-
joying themselves tremendously!
Thanks Bill for the FUNKY shot!
That is what ImageFest 2015 was all about. The best entertainment always comes in surprise packages or in this
case slideshows, for only $15 - it felt like a real night out! What a great way for families, friends, and individuals to
have a special evening out.
The Sid Williams Theatre again proved to be the place that an event like this works. People arrived, mingled, met
old friends and some new. CVPS members proudly displayed their photos on the lower level. Some sipped wine up-
stairs, while others made their way to their seats.
The evening lasted about two hours with door prize draws from various local sponsors after the intermission. It
was another evening of great promotion for our club.
Could we have done some things differently? Absolutely. We can only improve on what we did, how we did it,
make changes along the way and learn each time we do this kind of an event. The Sid has to make improvements to
their air conditioning system and, finally, I could learn to turn off the mic so that the battery doesn’t run down -
having said that, the incident gave Patrick something to do!
I think that most who attended had a good time, enjoyed the presentations, and would do it again. So, we will see
what the future brings! Thanks everyone!

We travelled around the world from Asia, to the exotic
Middle-east, touched down in Paris, visited the streets of
London, made various stops in the United States, on to
Eastern Canada, back across the prairies all the while
heading to beautiful British Columbia.
We were amazed by beautiful landscapes, water worlds,
architecture, small things and big things, creepy things,
and sweet things.
Right from vivid scenes in black and white or colour, to
amazing abstracts, to people, places and things we left the
audience with an urge to take up photography - an amaz-
ing and wonderful art form. PHOTO BY BILL TURNBULL

ImageFest - A Great Night Out! 6
Once a year, every year, for the last five years, my friend
Caroline and I have a date - it has been an annual event
for her and I to go to the CVPS ImageFest together. We
always enjoy the event; we look forward to it! Caroline
appreciates photography equally as I. We both ‘OOH’
and ‘AW’ over the spectacular imagery before us, taking
note of our favs! Last month’s show did not disappoint -
what a grand line-up of slide presentations! Simply a
feast for our eyes - there were landscapes that never
ended, guitars, people, architecture, culture, travel, col-
our, wildlife, cars, farms, and even dinosaurs! Each slide-
show as great as the previous! The ImageFest Team de-
serves a huge round of applause for a bang-up job. Caro-
line and I left the theatre saying to one another, ’That
show made me want to do more photography!’ Thanks
team for inspiring us and for the great night out - Caro-
line and I look forward to next year’s date! ~ JMM

SIG - Available Light #2 Nimisha Jimenez 7
My Available Light SIG was formed last December when Ron
Racine's group was full. Initially, I had no idea what ‘available
light’ meant, but since then I have done a lot of research and
have learnt a lot through online video tutorials I have shown to
the group.
We have agreed that ‘available light’ includes low light condi-
tions, natural diffused light, golden hour, blue hour, interior
light coming through windows and door passages - with or
without light modifiers. Exploring available light in portraiture,
in nature and landscape, and in still life, we have shot photos at
Goose Spit, Air Park, and at my Courtenay home. We had a
fabulous portrait photography session with John Sanzana where he taught us tips and techniques on how to
establish rapport with a model and the various angles that we could use for portraiture.
There are 10 members in the group, six who have been attending regularly on Tuesday nights since Decem-
ber. During our meetings we view online tutorials on Understanding Light, Portrait Photography, and Natural
Light Photography. We also share and view photos all the while giving feedback - this generates a lot of dis-
cussion. In April we are moving the meetings to a later time, from 6:30-8:30 pm due to Daylight Savings Time.
We have had regular photo shoots once a month and we have also initiated an ‘Impromptu Photo Shoot
Group’ that meets when weather conditions are appropriate. Future photo shoots are in the works: Photo-
graphing Horses; Little Qualicum Falls; and Elk Falls Provincial Park.
The group is open to new members. It is a supportive group that encourages photographic experimentation.

I always seem to be drawn to Kathy
Paynter’s images, and this one is no
different. I love the burst of yellow
and the touch of pink in this other-
wise muted image. It is a hopeful
shot, reminding us that spring is in-
deed here! Thanks Kathy, another
great one!

During a trip last December to Seattle, Werner Heinrich and wife made a stop to view Dale Chihuly’s work, one of the finest Master glassblowers in the world. Yup, this is all glass! Dale’s pieces can be found in sev-eral places around the world, including a mighty chandelier seen at the VIc-toria & Albert Museum in London, England. Grand im-ages Werner - thanks!
Magnificent! Looking over the edge of the Kilauea Calders
on the Big Island, Hawaii, Shawna Kirby shot this cool im-
age. The lava gives a fantastic glow throughout the eve-
ning! Splendid Shawna!
Celebration Of Nature Bryan Walwork 9
The Lions Gate Camera Club's
(LGCC’s) annual Celebration of
Nature invitational digital photog-
raphy competition is open to cam-
era clubs in BC and the Yukon. The
CVPS (we were still the CVCC for
the last round) has entered this
competition for the past two years
(2013 and 2014). A number of our
members produce some awesome
nature images and this competition
is a great way for them to receive
recognition from outside the CVPS.
As the name of the competition indicates, the theme is nature, including animals, plants and landscapes. It is bro-
ken down into three categories, which are judged separately: Birds; Mammals; and General. Aggregate scores for
the three categories are combined to give a competing club it's overall score.
Evidence of the “hand of man” must not be
present in any part of the images. The exception is scientific bands or
collars which should be a minor element in the image.
CAPA (Canadian Association for Photographic Art) guidelines permit
such things as weathered fence-posts and poles, or in some cases wire
Named Bella by the locals, this grizzly mom and one of her cub was captured in Glendale Cove out of Telegraph Cove on a bear photography field trip. Don Tait earned 22.5 points for this nurturing image called, ‘Please Mom.’
This shot, called, ’Naka Falls’ by Wink Richardson earned her 21.5 pts. It is a long exposure of the waterfalls at Naka Creek. Perfectly timed as the light shone through the trees from above.
‘On Handed Catch’ earned Viktor 28 points. Viktor manages to capture these great eagle shots when the tide in running high and fast - the fish come to the surface at this rare time and the eagles are ready for the hunt!
fences in their competitions. This is because some
birds for example, favour roosting on man-made items
like fence-posts. The LGCC has chosen to apply a more
strict set of rules, so images must be carefully in-
spected before submission.
Additionally, photographs of cultivated plants, domes-
tic animals and taxidermy specimens are not allowed.
It is common for cultivated plants to appear in the
wild, as the seeds get dispersed by birds and animals,
therefore, if an image contains a cultivated plant intro-
duced into a natural appearing environment, careful
inspection of the image should be undertaken before
submitting such an image.
Although the guidelines for submitted images are
stringent, the natural environment along our coastlines
and inland provide rich hunting grounds for creating
great photographs of nature. The CVPS will continue submitting images to this competition. We'll be asking you
for submissions in October or November. When you're out-and-about with your camera, keep in mind that one
of your images could be selected as part of our entry in the 2015 Celebration of Nature competition. Happy shoot-
ing! ~ Bryan Walwork
Congratulations to Viktor Davare, Wink Richardson, Don Tait, Rick Reeve, Mike Allard, and Bryan Wal-
work for their entries into the competition this year and their earned scores!
Celebration of Wildlife Con’t 10
Rick Reeve captured this Marmot by the side of the road in Yellowstone National Park, earning him 18.5 points. Fittingly called, ‘Marmot, this little guy kept a close eye on Rick as he composed this great shot.
‘On the Run’ by Bryan Walwork was shot in Tanzania. Bryan purposely left the shutter open to capture the blur of the zebras. It took them 15 minutes to pass while Bryan watched in awe. This shot earned him 20 points.
`Brooding Sky` by Mike Allard - this moody expansive land-scape image is so very West Coast and earned Mike 20.5 points!

It is nice to see new members com-
ing onboard with the CVPS and
even nicer when they start joining
in on some of the events and field
trips. New member Christie Jeffers
made it out to the Union Bay field
trip last month and composed this
colorful shot. Nice textures and
warm colors Christie - thanks for
submitting it!
Kristy Knowlan and Kerry
Dawson helped Ron Brown
set up another display of
photos at the Phoenix-
Christie Insurance Gallery
last month. Go check it out!!
Image Expressions - Patterns 12
The Image Expressions team is pleased at the level
of participation by club members in our monthly
Competition and Challenge events. In February, we
had 38 competition entries and 32 challenge sub-
missions. This month, we received 40 entries for the
Competition theme of ‘Patterns’ and 33 for the
‘Early’ Challenge theme. It's also good to see that a
number of our newer members are sending in their
images for the first time.
To me this is great learning experience in a number
of ways. Firstly, coming up with images to fit the
themes is a real ‘Challenge,’ no pun intended. Sec-
ondly, it's good to get past any apprehensions about
displaying your work in public - that's one of the reasons for trying to create great images in the first place. To
those who might say, ‘I'm just a beginner.’ I would respond that we're all beginners each and every month.
Humphrey does report that a lot of folks struggle with resizing and forget to rename their images, but he says
that everyone is getting better with practice. He says that most members usually get things right after a cou-
ple of tries. So keep on sending in those pictures!
One thing that Humphrey can't fix is images that are too small for good projection quality. Some people have
been caught out by their e-mail program's reducing image size on its own. Somewhere there will be a place to
select image size. Choose ‘actual size’ or ‘original size.’
Congratulations to this month's competition winners: First - Shawna Kirby; Second - Rick Gafuik; Third -
Blanche Mucci
Next month's themes: Competition - Water, Water Everywhere; Challenge - Seeing Red
You can review the rules and upcoming themes at our Zenfolio website http://
comoxvalleycameraclub.zenfolio.com/. Follow the links to ‘Portfolio’ and then ‘Image Expressions.’
For Humphrey and Bruce ~ Bill Turnbull
Thanks to those who submitted images to last month’s ‘Shoot for Cover.’ The theme for this month is, ‘Changing
Season.’ Get out there and shoot proof of the season change. One image will be chosen to be the cover shot for
