Managers Message —by Anthony Chelena

Discussions about the

Club’s dress code have

been around from the

beginning and will

probably be around

forever. Dress code

for a private Club is a

funny thing. If a Club is a collection of “like

minded” Members who want to enjoy a social

and recreational facility, why would a dress

code be necessary? If the Members were “like

minded”, why would the Club need a standard

of what to wear? In fact, today’s Club is

“diverse minded” about attire. Society dresses

a little differently every year and certainly

differently over the decades. Club leadership

wants to establish policy that maximizes every

Member’s enjoyment of the Club, and so as

the membership evolves, the Club’s dress code

evolves.

Recently, two of the Club’s committees, House

Committee and Committee X, considered

the oft-requested idea of allowing blue denim

in the Main Clubhouse. They made similar

recommendations and the Board of Directors

approved their recommendations and set

a new policy effective immediately: Blue

denim will be allowed in all areas of the Main

Clubhouse except for the Main Dining Room

(back center). Also, men will now be asked

to wear a jacket in the Main Dining Room

for dinner- a return to a standard from years

ago. Again, jeans are welcome in the Main

Clubhouse except the Main Dining Room,

where men must also wear a jacket for dinner.

Any discussion about allowing denim in the

Clubhouse will sooner or later get around to a

discussion about “nice” jeans. We all recognize

that expensive, current fashion jeans arrive at

posh stores with holes and tatters already in

them. Are a pair of $200 jeans with holes in

them “nice” jeans? Thankfully, the Board did

not place the staff in a position to evaluate

whether or not someone’s jeans are “nice”. But

the Board asks all Members to “Show respect

to your fellow Club Members” regarding attire.

And again it will be the Board, not staff, who

decides if Members meet that standard.

President’s Message —by Chris Burns

Have I mentioned that your board is a resourceful

bunch? Recall last month that we need to generate

about $300,000 in annual cash flow to meet our capital

repair/replacement demands, as well as make other

capital improvements to the club to keep us attractive,

relevant and desirable. This week, your board of

directors approved a budget that should generate

$327,000 in cash before capex in the next fiscal year.

The dues rates for 2014-2015 have been set and the rates reflect a 3%

increase from last year:

Annual Quarterly MonthlyA 2,785 721 245 B 1,800 478 163 C 845 233 79

There are significant cost reductions in the new fiscal year beginning May

1. These cost reductions were tough decisions, but as Anthony said to

the board, if they were easy, we would have already done them. The most

obvious reductions include:

Clubhouse Dining We will be closing the Clubhouse for lunch and dinner on Tuesdays.

Tuesdays have consistently been our slowest days in the Clubhouse and the

savings generated here are very significant.

Golf Handicap ChargeBased on our research, we are one of very few clubs that do not pass the golf

handicap charge on to the golfer. The Club pays a vendor for that service.

Next year a fee of $20/year will be charged to each member that maintains

a handicap. If you do not desire to maintain a handicap, there is no charge

for you.

Print Your Own NewsletterOur email newsletter data consistently shows that more and more members

are accessing our newsletter online and through email. Starting in May, we

will stop printing and mailing our newsletter. We realize this is a significant

change and will make it as easy as possible to minimize the impact. For

instance, when we email you the newsletter it will be in a format easy to

view on your computer. Still want a hard copy to read? No problem. We

will include a ready-formatted and ready to print version in the email AND

on our website, so you have ready access to print it on your printer.

There are other significant cost reductions in place that will be less

noticeable as we are adjusting our operating expenses to the new size of our

Club. Ultimately, we are excited about the financial impact of these changes.

They will provide substantial cash to spend on capital expenditures. And

in turn, these capital expenditures will keep the Club fresh and relevant

for generations to come. We think Members will appreciate seeing the

pace of capital expenditures accelerating and we hope they enhance your

enjoyment of your social activities.

HCC’s Explore the Outdoors Series

Family Bicycling on the Swamp Rabbit Trail • May 3 No Charge

Paddling WNC • May 6, 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM No Charge

Camping on the Golf Course • Saturday, May 16 $25 per Adult, $12.50 per Child

Ever thought about how to get involved in canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, or other outdoor activities that are so prevalent in our area? Well HCC is going to “test the waters” and organize some seminars and trips that will allow you to learn more about what’s involved and how to get started. We are kicking off the series with an easy camping trip, a bike ride on the Swamp Rabbit Trail and seminar entitled Paddling WNC.

Join us for a great day of bicycling from Travelers Rest to downtown Greenville (approximately 9 miles each way) on the abandoned railway turned into a bicycle path. http://greenvillerec.com/swamprabbit Meet at the Hendersonville Country Club at 9:00 AM for the drive (in your own car) to Sunrift Adventures in Travelers Rest. From there, everyone is on their own to pedal as far, linger as long, and return as they wish. This will not be a guided trip. Many groups expect to pedal to Reed Creek Park in downtown Greenville to enjoy one of the many restaurants for lunch, or some may choose to bring their own picnic in the many parks along the trail before pedaling back to Travelers Rest. (A one way shuttle can be arranged if you request in advance.) In any case, there are many options for lunch and refreshments along the way. Bring all your own equipment or rent a bicycle from Sunrift Adventures (864) 834-3019. Call the Club at 692-2261 to let us know you plan to join us.

Do you have a canoe, kayak or some sort of boat in your basement or garage and you wonder how, where and with whom to use it? Are you thinking about buying one? Join us for our Explore Outdoors talk. You will leave with an understanding of what to buy, what you already own, what it was designed to do, and maybe meet some people who will do it with you. This talk will be led by Chris Burns, a long time canoe instructor for Tennessee Valley Canoe Club. This interactive session will give you an overview of how to get started, what gear is needed, what’s involved and where to do it. At this event plans will be organized for a group to paddle a gentle stretch of the French Broad River past the new Sierra Nevada brewery and their riverside refreshment area. Please call for reservations.

Get your family, tent and sleeping bags ready to experience the Hendersonville Country Club golf course like you’ve never experienced it- all night long! The Club will have a limited number of “campsites” available for this sleepover behind #4 green and to the left and right of #5 tee. It will start with a hotdog/hamburger cookout, then we’ll provide marshmallows to roast on our campfire, watch a movie on our giant screen, then, in the morning, wake up to coffee, juice and a breakfast casserole, break down your tents and go home for some sleep. Maximum 2 non-member guests per membership family. No pets, please.

Golf Tips —by Jay King

With our PGA junior league golf

program beginning again this

April, I wanted to write about the

importance of kids (and all of us)

playing from the correct yardage.

Notice I did not say the correct tee.

I recently attended a seminar on youth player

development held by Ed Ibarguen, Director of Golf

at Duke University. He talked about how many

beginner and youth golfers are playing from too long

of a distance and taking four or more shots just to

reach the green. Doing this is teaching them to be 40

handicappers when they grow up. Not to mention they

get bored quickly because of how much time it’s taking

them to play. His point was that juniors should begin

playing and learning early on to have birdie putts and

get comfortable making pars. This is accomplished by

playing from the correct yardage so that he/she may use

similar clubs on their second shot that an experienced

or expert golfer would use.

I encourage all of you to try playing a few rounds from

a shorter yardage this year. If you aren’t able to reach

the greens in regulation try playing from a yardage that

will allow you to reach all the greens with your second

shot. You will have more fun and the game it won’t take

as long.

During the next few months I will be doing some

research on what clubs we all hit into the greens and

the yardage of our second shots. Bring me your data! I

would appreciate your help and will give the results in a

future newsletter article.

“Tee it forward this year!”

Grounds —by Craig DeJong

It’s beginning to happen on the golf course! Spring is

here and our staff is getting busier by the day. Our off

season was very successful, as we saw numerous projects

completed that will help add to the enjoyment of your

golf course. We are still working to finish up two areas;

the left side of #14, and the landscaping at the lower

putting green. Both should be completed soon.

Our aerification of the greens in March went very well. This year, in

addition to our core aerification, we used a Graden to dethatch the greens.

If left unmonitored, too much thatch can be detrimental to the overall

performance of the greens, including playability and health. This is a very

time consuming and labor intensive process, and once again our staff rose

to the occasion and did an excellent job! The greens will quickly return

to normal putting quality soon and remain there for the remainder of the

season. Our seasonal staff members are beginning to return, and we’re very

excited about continuing our successes of last year.
