Carers News
THE CARE ACT 2014
Over the last few months we have been reporting on the Act in this newsletter and
hopefully many of you will have seen or heard recently some local advertisements
explaining changes to social care from April 2015 due to the Care Act 2014. The Care
Act received Royal Assent in May 2014, the Act consolidates and modernises the
framework of care and support law, which means that there are new duties for Local
Authorities and new rights for service users and carers, which brings them on an equal
footing. The Act covers mainly adults with care and support needs and adult carers, but
does touch upon transition (where a child with needs becomes an adult) and there is
some crossover for young carers and the Children’s and Families Act. We have
produced an information sheet for carers on what these changes mean in Trafford and
there is more information on the Act on pages 3 and 6 of this Newsletter. If you would
like more information about the Act and what it may mean for you, then please feel free to
call our Helpline on 0161 848 2400 to obtain a copy of the information sheet, which is
also accessible via our website www.traffordcarerscentre.org.uk

OpenAccess for Trafford Residents
Trafford Council is encouraging residents to sign up to OpenAccess: An online service
that will allow people to check, keep track of their Council Tax and Housing Benefit
accounts. You can view account statements, payments made, payments that need to be
made and breakdowns of Housing Benefit and Could Tax Support if you receive either.
Landlords will also be able to use the service if they receive Housing Benefit payments
directly. The aim of the service is to reduce costs by reducing paper billing, and to enable
people to have easier access to their statements and to the status of their account. To

Fundraising
Charity Shop
This spring, in partnership with Manchester Carers Centre, we will be opening a charity
shop in Sale. We are very excited to be launching this new venture, and we can’t wait to
update you with news and developments from the shop.
Shop Stock
We would like to thank everyone who has donated stock for the shop, as well as the
volunteers who have been sorting through all the items and getting them ready. Until the
shop opens, we are still accepting donations at the Carers Centre, so if you have clothes,
shoes or accessories cluttering your wardrobe, or a houseful of gadgets and unused
items, please consider donating them to the Carers Centre.

Community Fundraising
We would like to thank everyone who has got involved and
supported the Carers Centre at our community collections and bag
packing events at local supermarkets. As well as raising the profile
of carers in Trafford, you’re hard work has raised £7,924 so far this
financial year. We are very grateful to everyone who has given up
their time to help at these events. We have many more planned for
the coming year, so if you can spare a few hours to come along and
help us raise vital funds for carers in Trafford, please contact the
Helpline on 0161 848 2400 for details.
ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon
In April, a team from Trafford Carers Centre will be running the ASICS Greater
Manchester Marathon, in relay. Running 13.1 miles each, we hope to raise funds to
support carers, and also to raise awareness of unpaid carers in Trafford. You can
support us by visiting our website www.traffordcarerscentre.org.uk and looking at our
Fundraising page. You can also follow our training updates on the ‘news’ section, for
details of how we are preparing for the run.
If you would like to come along on the day and show your support to our runners, we will
be organising a Trafford Carers Centre Cheer Station, please contact the Fundraising
team on 0161 848 2400 for information on how you can get involved.
Become a Helpline Volunteer
Our Carers Helpline is open from 9.00am—8.00pm Monday—Thursday, and 9.00am—
4.30pm Friday, providing information and advice as well as emotional support to carers.
The Helpline is the first port of call for many carers; whether it is to find out more about
how we can support them, ask for information on local services or to simply talk to
someone who understands. We are recruiting for volunteers to help support our
Helpline, both during the day and the evening. We offer full training and ongoing support
for volunteers and our shifts are flexible. Volunteering on our Helpline is the perfect
opportunity to improve on and gain new skills and meet new people, while supporting a
local charity. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding; knowing that you have made a
difference in someone’s life, and been there when they needed someone to talk to. For
more information on volunteering at the Carers Centre on our Helpline, please contact us
on 0161 848 2400 or email [email protected]

Volunteering at our Shop
If you’re looking for a volunteering opportunity and would like to gain some experience
working in retail or if you already have retail experience and would like to give something
back to your local community, why not consider volunteering at our charity shop? We will
be looking for people to work in the shop; serving customers and organising the stock
and displays. We will be offering full training and on-going support. Volunteers will
ideally need to be able to commit to a minimum of four hours each week, however the
shop will be open six days a week, so volunteering can fit round your other commitments.
For more information, please contact us on 0161 848 2400 or email
Volunteering With Young Carers
We are currently recruiting for volunteers to work with our
Young Carers Project, facilitating our Young Carers
Groups and supporting young carers. All our volunteers
will receive comprehensive training and on-going support,
as well as a DBS check before beginning work with young
carers. Perhaps you are considering pursuing a career
working with young people, or you used to be a young carer yourself? If so, please
contact us on 0161 848 2400 to have an informal chat about volunteering with us.

young carers, former young carers and professionals can share their experiences and
stories, get advice and generally chat with others who are in similar situations. Young
carers will be able to access information and advice to help them in their caring role, and
will be able to talk directly to specialist young carers workers, who will also moderate the
website and help keep everyone safe. Babble replaces YCNET. For more information

Care Act/Children and Families Act and Transition to Adulthood
The Acts recognise that transition is a complex situation as children and their carers or
parents are having to contend with the changes in services from children’s service
provision to adults, which can be very different. The Act says that the Local Authority has
a duty to carry out a transition assessment for a young person or their carer, in order to
help them plan, if they are likely to have care and support needs once they or the person
that they are caring for turns 18. Contact the Carers Centre for the Care Act 2014
information sheet on 0161 848 2400 or visit our website www.traffordcarerscentre.org.uk.
Or call us if you would like an assessment on the same number.
Young Carers Group
The Young Carers Group meets every Thursday evening, 5.30pm—7.30pm, at Trafford
Carers Centre, 13 Warwick Road, Old Trafford, M16 0QX. The group alternates; one
week having a session for younger carers aged 5 - 11, and the next week for older teens
aged 12 - 18. Please see the Dates for Your Diary pages for details of dates. If you, or
someone you know would like to attend the group, please contact the Helpline on 0161
848 2400 or text the Young Carers Phone on 07768 381 227 to let us know so that we
can ensure we have enough staff and volunteers on hand to run the sessions.
Care Act/Children and Families Act and Young Carers
These Acts place a responsibility on the Local Authority to ensure that young carers are identi-
fied, assessed and supported. There is more information on this in our information sheet, contact
the Helpline on 0161 848 2400 or visit the website www.traffordcarerscentre.org.uk for a copy.

House Share Opportunity
A 34 year old lady is looking for a compatible female to share accommodation. This
opportunity is for a female who has high support needs to share a rented accessible
bungalow in Timperley. The person must come with her own personal budget. She
would be responsible for her own day-time support but would share night-time support
costs and some expenses to enable both tenants to get the best out of their budgets.
Please contact 0161 928 1791 for further details.
Artismuk
Artismuk, an organisation that aims to support people with autism through art, has
opened a studio in Stockport. Artismuk currently has a floating gallery on a canal boat,
and is now launching an open studio every Thursday and Friday 11.00am—4.00pm at
Seven Miles Out, 20 Market Place, Stockport, SK1 1EY. This is a drop in session where
artists can come and use the studio to work on their own projects, there is no charge.
Artismuk will also be offering My Time—a session for parents and carers to work in a
group or individually on their own projects. This group will be running every other
Wednesday, there is no charge, for more information contact Brin on 07976903375 or

Older People
Dementia

Caring For Each Other in Old Age
As people get older, many find themselves in a two-way caring relationship; where carers
are caring for each other. Quite often this happens for couples, as they both develop
health problems or illnesses due to age. Many couples strive to remain as independent
as possible, for as long as possible, and caring for each other can bring them closer
together and make this possible. When the caring roles become very intense or carers
can’t carry on due to their own health, people might not look for help out of fear that they
might end up seperated. More and more now people are able to access supported living
and extra care facilities; where they can still be independent and have their own home,
but have the support they need and the reassurance that is there to help if they need it.
Elkin Court in Partington, Newhaven in Timperley and Fiona Gardens in Sale are
examples of extra care schemes where it’s residents have their own accessible
apartments, but can access shared facilities such as the lounge and support in case
there is an emergency. We run a carers coffee afternoon at Newhaven and Fiona
Gardens (details of which can be found on pages 15 and 16) and we have a caseworker
running an outreach session at Elkin court (please contact us for details of times and
dates). For more information call us on 0161 848 2400

Dementia Village
Hogewey is a village in the Netherlands, that seems like any
other village; small shops, restaurants and apartments.
However everyone who lives there suffers from dementia.
The village houses over 150 patients; carers blend in to the
environment and live with the residents, as well as running
shops and services. The aim of the care facility is to allow people with dementia the
freedom to live as independently as they can, while also offering a safe secure space
where they can receive care. Residents are free to do what they please in the village,
which offers lots of the activities you would find elsewhere. The village uses an
‘environmental approach’ to care, so while none of the staff would lie about what the
village really is, many of it’s residents think that it is a real village. Reports have shown
that residents eat better, take less medication and live longer lives than people with
dementia who live in traditional care homes.
Cancer
Act FAST Campaign Saves Lives
The Act Fast campaign, which encouraged people to call 999 if they spotted any of the
symptoms of a stroke in someone, has saved over 4,000 people from suffering long-term
disabilities, according to Public Health England. The campaign, launched in 2009, has
resulted in an extra 38,600 people reaching hospital quickly and receiving immediate
medical treatment. A new campaign is being launched to make people more aware of
mini-strokes, which have similar symptoms to strokes, as one in five people who have a
mini stroke will have a full stroke within a few days. As previously, this campaign urges
people to call 999 if they see any of the following symptoms, even if they don’t last long:
Face - has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
Arms - can they raise both their arms and keep them there?
Speech - is their speech slurred?
Time - time to call 999 if you see any single on of these signs.
Additional symptoms of a stroke and a mini-stroke can include: Sudden loss of vision or
blurred vision in one or both eyes, sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the
body, sudden memory loss or confusion, sudden dizziness, unsteadiness or a sudden
fall, especially with any of the other symptoms.

One in Two May Develop Cancer
Cancer Research UK have published research that up to one in
two people will develop cancer at some point in their lives. The
survey found that age was the biggest risk factor for more cancers, and is mainly due to
people living longer into old age, when cancer is more common. Cancer Research say
the new study highlights the need to improve public health and NHS cancer services, and
to put more emphasis on prevention of cancer and early detection.
As part of our carers health check service, our caseworkers can offer information and
advice on early symptoms of cancer, lifestyle choices that may help prevent some
cancers and can also help support carers to look after their own health. Carers are
offered a yearly review of their health check, to make sure they are staying well and
looking after their own health needs. If you would like a carer’s health check, please
contact us on 0161 848 2400 or refer yourself through the Self Assessment section of our
website www.traffordcarerscentre.org.uk
A public consultation on end of life support, presented at the Palliative and End of Life
Care Research Summit has rated ‘out of hours’ care for terminally ill people, their families
and their carers as a top priority for research. Chief Executive of the National Council for
Palliative Care, Claire Henry said “too many people still aren’t able to get the end of life
care and support that is right for them. That’s why understanding about and learning
from people’s experience of end of life care is so important.”

Britons struggle to Support Bereaved Friends and
Relatives
In research undertaken by the charity Dying Matters, almost
half of all Britons surveyed said they would not feel
comfortable talking to someone who has recently been
bereaved. Many bereaved people felt that they had
experienced negative reactions to their grief, such as people
avoiding them and not wanting to continue friendships. The majority of people who were
asked said that they did know someone who had recently lost a loved one, however a
quarter of people felt that they did not know what to say to them, and nearly half said they
only spoke about the loss if the bereaved person mentioned it first. Nearly one in ten said
that they had avoided discussing it with the bereaved person at all.
You can read the full survey at www.dyingmatters.org which also found that 70% of
people who had lost a loved one said that talking to someone about their bereavement
had helped them, although many said that they couldn’t find anyone who would listen or
were afraid of upsetting people so didn’t try and speak about it. Many of the carers who
attend the bereavement group here at the Carers Centre say how simply having a space
to talk, where they know there will be no judgement, is very valuable. If you would like to
know more about our bereavement and end of life services, please contact us on 0161
848 2400 or email [email protected]
Bereavement Group
The Bereavement Group is a friendly, informal session, open to all carers who have lost
someone they cared for. Although carers share their experiences, there is no pressure to
do so, and carers who simply want to listen at the moment are also welcome. The group
meets at Trafford Carers Centre, 13 Warwick Road, Old Trafford, M16 0QX. For any
more information on the group, please call us on 0161 848 2400.

Call to Reduce Suicides
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has called on all NHS Trusts to work towards
preventing suicides, inspired by the Stop Suicide Project (run by mental health charity
Mind), which aims to help reduce the number of suicides and encourages people to reach
out to others who are struggling. Paul Farmer, Chief Executive at Mind said “we lose
4,700 people to suicide in England each year, and around a third of people who have had
recent contact with mental health services. Every suicide is a tragedy. Worryingly,
suicide rates have been creeping up over the last few years after a period of decline.” For
more information on how Stop Suicide can support you, whether you need support for you
or for someone else, visit www.stopsuicidepledge.org

Five Steps to Improve Mental Wellbeing
Connect with the people around you; your family, friends and neighbours. Be
active by going for a bike ride, a walk to the park or get involved with local team
sports like netball or football. Keep learning and gaining new skills, there are lots of adult
learning courses available, have a look in your local library for more information. Give to
others perhaps through a simple act of kindness to a stranger or through
volunteering. There are lots of volunteering options available at the Carers Centre. Take
notice and try and be present in the moment, thinking about your feelings and the
world around you. For a copy of our mindfulness audio CD, which can help reduce
stress, contact us on 0161 848 2400.

Meet the Team
Getting to know you - Martine and Josie
Our casework team are, to many carers, the face of the Carers Centre, and their main
point of contact with us, whether it is on the phone or face to face at home visits or drop-
ins. We sat down with Josie, our longest service caseworker and Martine, the newest
arrival, to find out what it is that they enjoy about working with carers. Josie: “I think you
have to put yourself in to a carer’s shoes, they are all individuals and experts in their own
situations, and it’s important that the support we offer is individual too, it’s not one-size-
fits-all”. Martine joined us in December “I have experience as a carer and as a service
user due to my own health, and I had to give up work due to this. I always try and keep in
mind that caring is not a linear journey; it has ups and downs and often what carers really
need is just your honesty and your understanding. I see a lot of financial hardship and
isolation, knowing that you could be the only person that carer might get a chance to see
or speak to that week, it’s very humbling and makes you want to make sure you’re doing
your very best.”
The casework team is heavily involved in outreach work in the local community, trying to
identify carers early and offer them support then, to try and avoid carer breakdown. Josie
says “you spend a lot of time helping people realise that they are carers, that what they
are doing is more than just a parental role, or more than just the role of husband or wife,
that they are caring for someone who couldn’t cope without them. People often don’t like
to admit that they may be struggling, but it’s important we see them early, because then
we can often help make small changes or interventions that make a big difference in the
long term, and help people stay as independent as possible”. Martine: “We often see
carers in crisis; where everything has got on top of them and they are still managing to
carry on, and then something that may seem small comes along, like filling out a form or
an illness and suddenly they’re at breaking point. That’s why we’re out in the community,
trying to speak to carers and making sure they know about the support we can give them.
So they know that they are not alone.”
Josie is at the MS Therapy Centre (The Cornerhouse, 4th Avenue, Trafford Park, M17
1DB) every Wednesday morning, and at Newhaven Extra Care Facility (Tulip Drive,
Timperley, WA15 6LN) every Wednesday afternoon, available to talk to carers.
To speak to any member of our Casework Team please call us on 0161 848 2400.
