We are pleased to announce the U. S.Army Air Worthiness Release (AWR) ofthe Boeing-Davis-Honeywell InfraredSuppressor (IRS) for the Boeing CH-47Fhelicopter. The AWR clears the IRS toenter into operation on the F variant – asignificant milestone in a developmentand qualification program which began inthe spring of 2007. The AWR for the Dvariant is expected to be granted in thesummer of 2009.
Davis, Boeing, and Honeywell formed ateaming arrangement in 2005 to jointlydevelop an holistic IR suppressionsolution for the Chinook helicopter. In thisrelationship, Davis took responsibility forthe engine exhaust IRS (the “B-kit”),Honeywell assessed engine performanceimpacts, and Boeing lead the platformintegration (including the design of thebackup structure “A-kit”) and addressedall secondary sources of IR signature.The U. S. Army is the lead customer andhas taken responsibility for performing thequalification of the device.
The qualification program has beenconducted over the last 18 months andhas resulted in the accumulation of over150 flight hours to date. The programaddressed system robustness, aircraftperformance effects, and measured theIR signature with both IR cameras andcaptive seekers.
In addition, the added support structure inthe aft section of the helicopter wasanalysed and tested to improve fatiguelife both with and without the suppressorinstalled.

The CH-47 is in operation with severalarmed forces around the world, includingthe U.K., Holland, Canada, Australia,Spain, Japan, Italy, Korea, Singapore,and Greece. The grant of the AWR clearsthe way for these forces to acquire thetechnology. Boeing Integrated DefenceSystems (IDS) will act as the LeadSystems Integrator (LSI) for the sale ofthe CH-47 IRS to the internationalcommunity. Davis will subcontract toBoeing.
In January 2009, Davis celebrated thedelivery of the 50 IRS shipset for theCH-47. We have presently achieved afabrication rate of five shipsets (ten IRSunits) per month, with the capability toramp that rate up to eight shipsets permonth within our current facility. This willallow us to fill international user ordersw i t h n o r m a l l e a d t i m e s w h i l esimultaneously meeting U. S. Armyproduction commitments.

Davis has continued to focus on thedevelopment and fabrication ofaircraft IR suppression technology.With the successful execution of theCH-47 IRS program for the U. S. Armywe have proved that we have theexpertise, technology, quality, andproduction scale to meet therequirements of one of the mostdemanding armed services in theworld.
We continue to invest in research anddevelopment, design solutions to newplatforms, and streamline for ourfabrication processes. We haverecently been contracted to developIR suppressors for the AW129 andBeechcraft King Air 350 aircraft, andhave started an internally fundeddevelopment on the C-130 and C-27J.
Specialization in the field has uniquelypositioned us to provide rapiddevelopment and fabrication of IRsuppressors wi th the qual i tydemanded by the aerospace industry.

certification of an IR suppressor for the
CASA CN-235 aircraft. The CN-235 IRS
utilizes the proven Centre Body Tailpipe
(CBT) concept which provides effective
IR signature reduction for all view angles
around the aircraft. The device fits
discretely within the existing engine
cowling, and causes minimal aircraft
performance effects, including low drag
and engine power penalty.
The following polar plot illustrates the
measured mid wave IR signature of both
the baseline and suppressed CN-235 for
a series of azimuth angles around the

The exhaust then flows into a filmcooled tailpipe which together with thenozzle obstructs the view into the gast u r b i n e e n g i n e m a c h i n e r y. A naerodynamic cowling covers the hotsections of the exhaust system while alsominimizing drag. The entire IRS system
