"Day of Pink" On Wednesday, April 11, Wawanesa School participated in the national "Day of Pink" The “Day of Pink” started when a high school boy in Nova Scotia wore a pink shirt to school and was bullied about it. His friends banded together and all wore pink to support him. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 wore pink to show that they are against bullying. We signed mini t-shirts and posted them on the bulletin board to say that we can make a difference in the fight against bullying. Many classrooms participated in activities to remind students how bullying can hurt and how we can help stop it. We had great participation from both students and staff! Dr. Suess said it best: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not!"

Profit & Ambition The RCA Museum in Shilo has been hosting a special exhibit for the past few months, and on April 4th Mrs. Elder's Grade 6 class and Miss Abbott's History 30F class joined to tour the Museum. Profit & Ambition, the story of the fur trade in Canada, has been on loan from the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec. It was no mean feat for the RCA Museum to acquire this exhibit: it's expensive to book and requires a week for set-up and removal by the Gatineau staff, and the RCA Museum also had to meet environmental standards that would ensure the paintings from the National Gallery would not be damaged by either humidity or dryness. We know we're fortunate to live when and as we do, but this exhibit brought that home in spades. If you were lucky enough to be a male less than 5' 6" tall and weighing no more than 140 lbs., you would have the opportunity to become a voyageur. Just think: you could sign a two year contract to paddle 45 strokes a minute for 14 hours through mosquito infested rapids for the remarkable sum of $2500 (in our current money)! And if you were a "country" wife, you could harvest wild rice, skin and butcher animals, make all your family's clothes (if you prepared the hides), and then, when your husband returned to England, be given to another man! Profit & Ambition will be on display at the RCA Museum until April 12, 2012.
