This newsletter should reach Lions in plenty of time for club members

to make reservations for the Spring Convention on April 13. The

details are on page 4 and 5. DG Bill and the committee have worked hard to make this event enjoyable. There will be a strolling violinist, a

music competition and more! Three clubs will receive $100 each for

bringing the most members and guests. AND there will be four random

drawings for $50 each for your club’s charities.

Many Lions will be recognized at this Convention for the work they’ve

done for the District; come out and personally thank them for their ser-

vice.

The Fall Rally was canceled and DG Bill took the blame but the fact is

that not enough Lions were planning to attend. DG Bill has worked ex-

tremely hard this year through his illness to make District 14-N an out-

standing district. Let’s help him continue this effort and show him our

support.

The latest issue of The Pride, is on 14-N’s site at http://

www.lionspa14n.org/March%202019,%20Issue%203.pdf. This is one

of the last two issues that will also be printed and mailed. Starting July

1, 2019 all issues will be online only. The decision to have the maga-

zine online only was made by last year’s State Council of District Gover-

nors. The primary reason for this is the cost of printing and mailing the

magazine.

Remember the State Convention is May 16-19 (more information is

on pages 18-21) and it looks like it will be fun. There’s still time to

register. An important issue involving the Council Chair selection will be

voted on by delegates from the clubs.

1VDG Kim and his wife, Diane, are going to the International Con-

vention in Milan, Italy. July 5-9 and we hope they have a great

time, meet many new Lions friends and learn many things to share with

us.

DG Bill’s goals for 2018-2019 included asking clubs to contribute $100

or more to LCIF and club members to become contributing members of

LCIF for $20. Has your club done this? Have your members contribut-

ed $20?

• The cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. It is the main focusing element of the eye. Vision will be

dramatically reduced if the cornea becomes cloudy from disease, injury or infection.

• Corneal transplantation is one of the most frequently performed human transplant procedures.

• Most people can be an eye donor.

• Cataracts, poor eyesight and prior eye surgery may not prohibit you from becoming an eye donor.

• Individuals with cancer or diabetes may become eye donors.

• Families do not incur extra expense; nor are they paid for eye donations.

• Eye donation does not usually delay funeral arrangements or prohibit open caskets.

• Eye donation is an opportunity to restore someone’s sight. Eye, organ, and tissue donations are consistent with the

beliefs and attitudes of major religions.

• One eye donor can potentially help several people and aid thousands if the tissue is used for research or education.

• Donations that are unsuitable for transplant can be used for medical research and education.

• Over 90% of all corneal transplant operations successfully restore the corneal recipient’s vision.

Eye Donor Awareness

Corneal Transplant

We as Lions should be aware of the many methods blindness and eye problems can be alleviated. One such story came to light recently. A Volant Lion had both his corneas transplanted in 2016; here is his story.

“A corneal transplant involves surgically removing the cornea and replacing it with donated tissue. This surgical proce-dure helps improve vision in those with corneal problems, such as scarring, cloudiness or thinning. Corneal transplants known as penetrating keratoplasty involve removing a small part of the cornea that includes all five layers of tissue and attaching the donated tissue in its place. There is also a less invasive procedure known as lamellar keratoplasty, which involves replacing the inner layer and outer layer of the cornea instead of each layer.”

Bob’s experience: “Throughout 2015, at age 79, my eyesight deteriorated to a level that I was having trouble reading road signs and newspapers and watching TV. My vision was blurred.

My optometrist diagnosed my condition as diseased corneas in both eyes.

After additional testing at a clinic in Wexford, PA, it was determined that both corneas had to be replaced.

After eye bank donors were located, my right eye cornea was replaced in July 2016, followed by my left eye in Sep-tember 2016.

My eyesight improved to a level that I needed two lens reductions in my eyeglasses over the following year.

My eyesight now is the best it has been in the past 20 years.

I will forever be grateful to those individuals who were organ donors.”

Any lion selected to serve as Council Chairperson must be a Pennsylvania resident and a member in good standing of an MD-14 Lions Club.

The first selection of a Vice Council Chairperson using this method will occur at the Fourth Council of Governors Meeting of the 2022-2023 Lions year. The Vice Council Chairperson will serve a one-year term (concurrent with the year as District Governor) and then become the Council Chairperson. In the event, either before or after becoming the Vice Council Chairperson, the Lion is unable or refuses to serve, or having accepted, resigns or dies, the sitting District Governors shall appoint a replacement from among the same group of First Vice District Governors (who may now be District Governors) to serve out the term of office and then serve as the Council Chairperson. If no one in this group is willing to serve, then the sitting District Governors will select a qualified Past District Governor to serve in the position.”

SHALL THIS RESOLUTION BE ADOPTED? YES NO

The USA/Canada Leo Leadership

Forum is coming to Arizona!

As we start our second century

of service, we are investing into

the future of Lions Clubs—our

Leos. Our Leo Club Program

started here in the United States

almost sixty years ago and today

continues to flourish with more

than 7,000+ clubs worldwide,

175,000 Leos, 145 Countries.

Just last year, Leo Clubs com-

pleted 24,038 projects. These

clubs are serving many people,

and they are not stopping any-

time soon.

We have united to encourage

and inspire our Leos to be the

great change we need for Lions’ continued success. Our vision is to empower and further educate our Leos in areas of

Leadership and community engagement/development. With that said, Leo advocates gathered to form the USA/Canada

Leo Leadership Forum. This forum is the first of its kind n our Constitutional Area. A forum organized for Leos by Leos.

From all over the United States, Canada, and Multiple District 60 “Islands of the Caribbean” and other affiliated territo-

ries, our Leos share a common set of values. They serve with enthusiasm, constantly striving to make positive, sustaina-

ble change to our communities. They inspire their peers and share their talents with those in need. They make an im-

pact on our Lions and reinvigorate our lifetime commitment to serve in this organization. These values give our Leos the

power to make profound impact, and with us “LIONS” on their side there can be no limit.

Our Leo Forum will provide Leos with various workshops in leadership, public speaking, community development, etc.

These workshops will be development by experts in the subject and co-facilitated by Leo leaders. At the completion of

the Leo Forum, our Leos will receive their High School Degree. Moreover, we will offer fun activities so Leos can inspire

and learn from each other and later bring home their newfound knowledge and share it with their clubs. This forum

aims to make a demonstrated commitment to our Leos that we believe; are the future of Lions.

We hope you may consider donating < Caution-https://leosforum.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?

tion will help our foundation forward our mission of better supporting our Leos through our annual leadership forum. As

a sign of our appreciation, all donors will be recognized with a club patch or forum pin.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Yours in Lionism,
