Dear Parishioners, We began Lent 2020 with our theme is “Restorative

Justice: We are all tied together in Christ.”

Who would have thought that our theme of restoration, hope, and community found in Christ would be made manifest as we stay at home during this Covid-19 pandemic. The words I wrote in early February for my Easter Letter ring so true!

“In Scripture, God is the bright light that leads to and is the goal of creation. It is in the Gospel of John that Jesus refers to himself as “the light of the world.” Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12.) The thing about darkness, whether literal or figurative, is that we don't always know when we're in it. While we sometimes see the darkness in our own lives, our failures and our problems, at other times we need someone else to point it out to us. Lent is a time when we reflect on our lives, look for guidance, and seek healing and hope. Our times of prayer and penance help us recognize our personal and private sins, as well as the public and institutional sins that we cooperate with. Yet in all of this, God is Light, shining through Jesus and his Church, guiding us on the way to a recreated universe. Through the Death and Resurrection of Christ, we receive Restorative Justice for ourselves and those in our community.

“In his great mercy he has given us new birth into

a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus

Christ...” (1 Peter 1:3)

I am thinking of each of you in this time of “Darkness” and of “Light,” and my prayer for you is that we may be renewed and emboldened in our faith and in our commitment to be present to all whom we love and to all who need us. Happy Easter! Father Mike Meany

Drodzy Parafianie, Wielki Post 2020 rozpoczęliśmy od tematu „Sprawiedliwość Odnawiająca: wszyscy jesteśmy związani w Chrystusie”. Kto by pomyślał, że nasz temat odnowy, nadziei i wspólnoty znalezionej w Chrystusie zostanie ujawniony, gdy będziemy w domu podczas pandemii Covid 19. Słowa, które napisałem na początku lutego w moim liście Wielkanocnym, są tak prawdziwe! „W Piśmie Świętym Bóg jest jasnym światłem, które prowadzi i jest celem stworzenia. To w Ewangelii Jana Jezus nazywa siebie „światłością świata”. Jezus mówi: „ «Ja jestem światłością świata. Kto idzie za Mną, nie będzie chodził w ciemności, lecz będzie miał światło życia» (Jan 8:12). Ciemność, dosłowna lub przenośna, polega na tym, że nie zawsze wiemy, kiedy się w niej znajdujemy. Podczas gdy czasami widzimy ciemność w naszym życiu w postaci naszych niepowodzeń i naszych problemów, innym razem potrzebujemy kogoś innego, aby nam to wskazał. Wielki Post jest czasem, w którym zastanawiamy się nad naszym życiem, szukamy wskazówek, szukamy uzdrowienia i nadziei. Nasz czas modlitwy i pokuty pomaga nam rozpoznać grzechy osobiste i prywatne, a także grzechy publiczne i instytucjonalne, z którymi współpracujemy. Wipes, Disinfecting Sprays, & Homemade Masks

Are You Ready To Rise To A New Challenge?

In fall 2019 you made over 160 blankets for the homebound and less fortunate.

In fall 2020 you made 335 care packages for veterans.

Now, we ask you to help our Niles first responders!

Fr. Meany recently spoke with Niles Police Dept. They are in need of two things: • Un-opened disinfecting wipes and disinfecting sprays to keep their vehicles and facilities germ free. • Face coverings -- N95 masks ideally, or medical facemasks, but because of the shortage homemade face

masks are requested for police and fire personnel use while serving the public. Instructions: Simple instructions from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are on pages 4-7. Polish instructions are on page 7. Please wash your hands, clean your work area, and use clean materials. 1) We encourage all parishioners to make face masks for donation. Please put the completed masks into a sealed bag, such as a sandwich bag. 2) Parish staff will collect face masks, un-opened disinfecting wipes, and un-opened disinfecting sprays (e.g., Lysol) in front of the church on Monday, April 13, from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. We plan to collect items at the same time on Mondays in front of the church while maintaining social distance until the stay-at-home order is lifted. Donations will be accepted from your car window, similar to how we collect bags for Uncle Pete's Ministry. If you have questions please call 847-966-8145 or email [email protected]. First Reading

1ACTS 10:34A, 37-43

Peter proceeded to speak and said: "You know what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name."

Reflection for the First Reading

If you have ever wondered “what Christianity is really about?” Today’s first reading gives you the clearest answer. We encounter Peter who after receiving the Holy Spirit bravely proclaims his faith in Jesus. And what does he say? It seems to me that his profession of faith contains three things: 1. That Peter knows who Jesus is. He says that he is a

witness of mighty deeds of Jesus, he confirms that Jesus was an exceptional person, and more than that - that He is the God incarnate.

2. Peter highlights that Jesus is resurrected, he conquered death, and through that proved his identity.

3. Peter expresses that he was entrusted by Jesus to proclaim Him and to be sent with Good News.

4. What Peter proclaims in his speech is Christianity in a nutshell: to know Jesus, meaning to have a personal relationship with Him, to realize His impact on your life, and to go testifying to others of your faith in Christ.

On this Easter Sunday, ask yourself these questions:

1. In what way have you developed a personal

relationship with Jesus?

2. What are the moments in your life that your really felt Jesus present and active?

3. In what way have you fulfilled that mandate of Jesus of being a witness to Him for others?

Second Reading

I COR 5:6B-8 Brothers and sisters: Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough, inasmuch as you are unleavened. For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Reflection on the Second Reading Our brief second reading today from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians is exactly what the Resurrection and Easter ought to challenge us to do on a practical level and what our coronavirus-induced hiatus from our regular rhythms of life ought to challenge us to do as well. St. Paul tells us to “Clear out the old yeast, so that you may become a fresh batch of dough” and to “celebrate the feast, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” The Easter that we celebrate today is not about simply picking up where you left off before Lent and going back to doing the same things in the same way that you did then, and keeping the old yeast around, but coming back better because through Lent you did the work to get rid of the old yeast of malice and wickedness. How, then, are you specifically closer to God and being more of the person of sincerity and truth because of Lent and now Easter? In the same way, what “old yeasts” in your life did you get rid of during Lent or do you want to continue to try and get rid of as time goes on? One “old yeast” that people will certainly have on their minds when we get out of the coronavirus is all the plans that they had that needed to be altered because of what we have been going through. But, the lessons from Lent and Easter are not that we move forward from where we wished we were or from where we think we ought to be but about meeting ourselves where we are at and recognizing the presence and movement of God in the lives that we

have lived and going from the yeast of malice and wickedness to the bread of sincerity and truth. So, on this Easter, maybe more than others, “think of what is above, not of what is on earth.” Fr. Gospel

JN 20:1-9 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Reflection on the Gospel You may be surprised to learn that the actual event of Jesus' Resurrection is not described any place in the New Testament. It remains an indescribable mystery. However, two kinds of stories were told in reference to the Resurrection. One type refers to Jesus appearance after being raised from the dead, and the other focuses on the empty tomb. We must keep in mind that neither stories are attempts to “prove” the Resurrection of Jesus; faith is not a scientific endeavor. It's not about collecting evidence as if your in a lab. It's about a witness of faith. Today's Gospel has three main characters: Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John, the Beloved Disciple. What always strikes me most is the amount of movement that takes place. There's a lot of running around!

Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb, sees that the stone has been removed, and then runs to tell Simon Peter and the Beloved Disciple. She assumes that someone took the body of Jesus, and no one knows where it's at. Then Peter and John both run to the tomb, but John outruns Peter. The Beloved Disciple looks in and sees the burial clothes from outside, then Peter arrives shortly thereafter (John is a sprinter or perhaps more likely he's a great deal younger?) and enters the tomb to see the burial clothes rolled up neatly, separate from the head covering. These details are to indicate this is not a situation of a “body snatcher.” Notice, Peter makes no profession of faith, but then the Beloved enters and sees exactly the same as what Peter saw but he immediately believes. Three Holy people, Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John, are all obviously in love with Jesus and full of grief. One understands immediately and the others have to ponder it for a while.


Our life is often consumed with a great deal of running back and forth. Sometimes a situation and its solution is so very obvious. Other times, especially at the time of loss, of sickness and death, we can spend a lifetime trying to figure out the meaning of it. Why did this happen? What does this terrible situation say about my future, my life? Yes, you and I and all people of good will, even with the best of intentions, sometimes miss what's really happening. We don't recognize the moments of grace that is right in front of us. Once again, we do a great deal of running around, not just in the business of life, running back and forth to work or whatever, but also running around emotionally and spiritually. Hopefully, we come to believe like Peter even if it takes us a while. The Life and Resurrection of Jesus is a life of signs -- words and deeds that are capable of pulling people into the mystery of Spirit. Jesus is the bridge for all of us, the mediator between the divine and the human. Sometimes we get it and other times we don't. The disciples come to believe; they have a spiritual realization of the presence of Jesus. He is in their midst. How do they know? Jesus brings peace in the midst of fear. His presence emerges from within and allays their inner panic. During the worldwide pandemic we ask God to help us in our unbelief, to fulfill his promise. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 14:27) Happy Easter, Father Mike Meany

SJB WOMAN OF THE YEAR LUNCHEON

POSTPONED Because of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus in making plans, our Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) Vicariate II Woman of the Year Luncheon has been postponed from Saturday, May 9, to a date some time in the autumn. We are working with Chateau Ritz on this issue. Joan Czerlanis is our SJB Woman of the Year, and she deserves to be honored. Hopefully she will be able to crown Mary on May 3 if Masses resume in time, and we will see her in the Niles July 4 Parade. We will keep our parishioners informed about a future date for our luncheon recognizing Joan and the Women of the Year from our sister parishes in Vicariate II. ACCW SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE EXTENDED The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) $1,000 scholarship for a high school senior girl deadline for applications has been extended to April 30. ACCW receives applications from all over the Archdiocese and usually has close to 100 to consider. his year, however, only ten have been received so far. If you are a high school senior girl planning to attend a college/university (or if you know of one), you may want to take advantage of this extension to complete an application for the scholarship, which can translate to an award of $4,000 over a four-year period of studies. Lenten Reconciliaton Individual confessions are currently not possible; this includes virtual or phone confessions, which are never permissible, nor drive-thru confessions. Despite the good intentions around such novelty, we must attend to our underlying theological tradition of the sacrament, as well as support the stay-at-home order and its intended purpose – to keep people safe in their homes at this time.

• In keeping with longstanding pastoral practice when penitents’ access to the sacrament is restricted, they can be assured that their sins are forgiven if they make an act of contrition with a firm resolve to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation after the stay-at-home order is lifted.

• The faithful should be encouraged to pray particular prayers or meditate on passages of the Bible that you recommend to assist them in seeking the mercy and forgiveness of God and the grace of reconciliation. Our Lord knows your hearts, and He desires to reconcile your lives to Him. He awaits your presence in the Sacrament of Reconciliation once the stay-at-home order is lifted and our churches are re-opened. From Fr. Meany, Fr. Przemek, and Fr. Carlton: Our pastoral staff recommends daily prayer and scripture readings, and prayer of the Rosary either individually or as a family, particularly during Holy Week.
