Dear Parishioners, The Easter Bunny has gone back over the hill. Hopefully all the Easter eggs and candies have been found and eaten! So now is the time for the real work of Easter to begin: time to bring hope and freedom and resurrection to all! A hope found in Christ. The Easter Season extends to the Feast of Pentecost, June 9th. The mystery of Christ’s Resurrection gives us hope, a new horizon for our lives. Through our Baptism in Christ, God has given us the catalyst or energy to be his servants. We are now Christ’s eyes, ears, hands, and heart to free all who are imprisoned and sitting in darkness, hoping and praying for some sign of Resurrection in their lives. Yes, despite the pessimism and negativity that can darken our spirits, God's love and mercy gives us the ability to be “game changers.” Nothing is impossible with God's love! Today, I wish to especially thank all who provide a very important part of the parish prayer and community life. The ongoing work of our School Families under the direc-tion of Dr. Maloney and that of the Religious Education Families under the direction of Mr. Mac Karaban cannot be underestimated. So many others, too numerous to be named individually, make a significant difference as well. Let me highlight first of all the social life of the parish. We have successful events like the St. Patrick's Party sponsored by the Knights of Columbus which supports our GLADD program and other worthy causes, the two very successful, “record breaker” Lenten Fish Fries as reported in the Chi-cago Tribune, organized by Holy Name Society Men's Club, The Catholic Women's Club, The Parish School As-sociation, the Girl and Boy Scouts, and the Filipino-American Club. In a polarized and often harshly judgmental world, a world where shame is used to destroy an individual’s possibilities for redemption, these spiritual and social events help to foster connections among individuals and groups. Relation-ships are established and further developed while having a good time. By planning and working on projects, people form community. The life of the parish is enhanced. A Christian community is established. Secondly, thank you for your participation in many Lenten prayer experiences: our English Lenten Mission led by Deacon Peter Pedrasa and Mr. Mac Karaban, our Polish Lenten Mission lead by Father Marcin Zasada, the weekly Stations of the Cross, the J.S. Bach St. Matthew Passion Concert, the Teen Retreat, Gorzkie Zale devotions, Anoint-ing of the Sick, the School's Annual Living Stations, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Thanks to everyone who pitches in, to those who help plan and work on the many parish gatherings, including Father Samborski, Father Przemek, Deacon Larry, Deacon Andy, and some of our key leadership team that have not men-tioned above: Marek Rachelski, Director of Music, John Mazur, and our maintenance and secretarial support team. Thank you to all those who help in these prayer experienc-es and social events. You provide a great service to our par-ish community. Thank you for making St. John Brebeuf a great parish to attend and raise a family in! Father Mike Meany

Drodzy parafianie, Zajączek Wielkanocny wrócił na wzgórze. Mam nadzieję, że wszystkie pisanki i cukierki zostały znalezione i zjedzone! Nadszedł czas na rozpoczecie prawdziwej pracy wielkanocnej: czas przynieść nadzieję, wolność i zmartwychwstanie wszystkim! Nadzieję znalezioną w Chrystusie. Sezon Wielkanocny trwa do Święta Pięćdziesiątnicy, 9 czerwca.

Planując i pracując nad projektami, ludzie tworzą społeczność. Samborski, ks. Przemek, John Mazur oraz nasz zespół obsługi technicznej i sekretariatu. Dziękuję wszystkim, którzy pomagają w tych modlitwach i wydarzeniach społecznych. Zapewniacie wspaniałą obsługę naszej wspólnocie parafialnej. Dziękujemy za uczynienie St. John Brebeuf wspaniałą parafią, w której można uczestniczyć i wychowywać rodzinę! Ks. Mike Meany

Dear Parishioners, At this time I would like to make a progress report on the infrastructure improvements needed in our church. Our iconic church tower needs total replacement. The church parking lot needs repaving and sealing. The church bathrooms need to be updated, and the church organ is failing and soon needs to be replaced. These are other church-related capital projects that are in need of our attention. Over the past eight years, the following projects have been completed through your generosity: • Replaced concrete pad in front of church and school • Parking lot patched and sealed by the Ministry Center and in front of the church and rectory • Replaced water damage in main church electrical panel • Installed fire alarm system in school with heat detectors • Refit school boiler • Repaired eight cracked concrete church beams • Replaced eight broken floor-to-ceiling windows in church, near Stations of the Cross • Remodeled school entrance to install security doors • Relocated principal’s office to front entrance of the school • Remodeled Religious Education office to allow for private office • Reconfigured Ministry Center and moved parish offices there • Replaced deteriorating gym wall, including ventilation system • Replaced gym sound system • Remodeled rectory: removed small offices, demo and asbestos abatement • Removed asbestos from Flanagan Hall floor tile, painted, and retiled • Replaced church sound system • Replaced two large sections of the 30-year-old school roof • New LED lighting for Ministry Center, gym, church interior and exterior, and school exterior • Repainted entire Ministry Center • Installed modern, safe school playground • Purchased one-to-one technology for school to make it state-of-the-art At this time I would like all of the households that support the parish every week, and who make a contribution to the capital campaign and/or supported the Gala and other fundraising activities. Thank you for all your prayers and support. Fr. Mike Meany

From the Desk of Fr. Mike Meany April 23, 2019 Imagine it is a bright, sunny, perfect Sunday morning 50 or so years from now. Our beloved St. John Brebeuf church is filled to the brim with families, young and old, celebrating Mass, singing, and eager to enjoy this beautiful day together. Among the worshippers is a little girl. She is about five years old. She has on a pink dress, her very best shoes, and her curly hair is in a ponytail. She is trying her best to sit still and be good, but she really, really wants to explore. This is the first time the little girl has ever been to St. John Brebeuf church. She has heard her parents talk about the church and about growing up in Niles many times. She is captivated by the huge open space in the middle of the church. She wants nothing more than just to be able to gaze upwards and count the windows as the sun pours in. As the little girl comes out of Mass, hand-in-hand with her parents, she spies a big wooden plaque hanging on the wall, with the outline of the church tower carved into it. “Look,” she says, and pulls her parents over to it. “What does it say?” “It says these are the names of the people who restored the church tower,” her mother tells her, lifting her up to see all the names on the plaque. The little girl reaches out to trace her finger along the engraving in the middle, the tower and its cross. “It says this happened in 2019. That would have been when…” her mother's voice trails off as she locates the name. “Look,” she says to the little girl. She points to a name, maybe with a little catch in her voice. She says the name quietly, remembering you and how special you were to her. “They loved this church so much that they paid for one of the big windows in the tower to be replaced.” The little girl runs her soft finger over your name as it is engraved on the plaque. “Can I see it?” she asks. Patiently, her mother leads her back into the church, now quiet and nearly empty. Together they figure out the exact window that was replaced thanks to you. “There, I see it!” the little girl says. Our Tower, and why it is so special The tower means so much to all of us at St. John Brebeuf. We get excited when we see the cross up above the trees as we drive down Harlem Avenue. On cold winter nights we see the glow from inside the church and know that the warmth of friendships and of God’s love awaits us underneath.

It is hard to imagine St. John Brebeuf without its tower. Yet the entire tower is in danger and we must act now. The windows are worn out from all the heat, cold, snow, and wind. The frames need to be replaced. Perhaps from your seat you have seen the cracks in the windows. From what the architects and experts tell us, the situation is getting worse. Rain is starting to leak in. Our tower structure must be replaced. This is not something that can wait -- we can't put it off. The Archdiocese is helping us come up with a plan for its repair, which we hope can be done later this year. The financial support of all our parishioners is needed as we prepare for this huge project. Each window and wooden panel must be replaced, along with all the framing. This will be an extraordinary undertaking. Each window and panel faces a different direction, and we intend to allow donors to let us know which direction they prefer their window or panel to face. We will record all of this so that, just like the little girl, you and your family will be able to find your gift for generations to come. The names of all donors will be listed in a special commemorative publication as well as on a permanent plaque that will be placed in the church. If you are able to donate an entire window, I encourage you to do so. Or, if you are able to join others by donating $1,000 or even $100, we have a place for you, too. Along with the repairs to the tower, the funds raised will be used to refresh the church in other ways -- the organ, bathrooms, and parking lot. These are all important repairs so that our church can continue to be a safe, welcoming space for all who visit. For the little girl, visiting St. John Brebeuf, experiencing the wonder of our soaring tower, and finding your name as a donor who cared enough to restore the tower is something she will never forget. Many years from now, in this simple Sunday visit to our church, your window becomes her window. From that moment forward, she will know in her heart that no matter where her life leads her, there is a part of her that will always be at St. John Brebeuf and in the Catholic Church. You are people of great faith, an inspiration to our entire community. I hope that you will make a pledge today so that we can "Restore Our Tower - Refresh Our Church." Thank you, and God Bless. Fr. Mike Meany

SJB Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children's Liturgy of the Word continues to grow as more children are joining us for this special worship experience. The Liturgy is geared especially for children ages 6-10. It is a special opportunity for children to understand and appreciate Scripture at Sunday Mass at 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Polish Mass. Basically, after the opening prayer (Collect), the children are invited to come forward with two adult Catechists and go to the Music Room in church to participate in their own Liturgy of the Word.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers an experience for children to hear Scripture in words they understand and to share their own understanding of God’s word. The children return to the main parish assembly for the Liturgy of the Eu-charist. We warmly invite all children in the parish to participate in the Chil-dren’s Liturgy of he Word. All parents, please encourage your children to join when the clergy invites them to come forward to hear the good news of the Lord. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry will continue until June of 2019. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate!
