Game 9 | Road Game 5 (1-3) | Night Game 5 (1-3)
TV: SNLA//KTLA/MLB Network | Radio: AM 570 (Eng.); 1020 AM (Span.)
STAY WARM, BOYS: The Dodgers tonight continue their
three-game series and six-game road trip (1-3) in chilly
Chicago with the Cubs, following Monday night’s walk-off
loss and yesterday’s day off. The club plays a day game
tomorrow, prior to heading home in order to begin a six-game
stand against the Diamondbacks and Rockies.
Logan Forsythe and Yasmani Grandal were bright
spots in the lineup Monday, each collecting two hits.
Over his last two games, Forsythe is 5-for-10 with a
double, three runs scored and an RBI.
Los Angeles is 10-7 at Wrigley Field in the regular
season since the start of 2013, but have lost three
consecutive contests and four of the last five at the
Friendly Confines. Los Angeles’ .588 winning
percentage over that time is second in the NL to the San
Diego Padres (8-5, .613).
THE MEN IN THE PEN: The Dodger bullpen took a tough loss
Monday night, despite turning in more great work during the early
part of this season. The Los Angeles bullpen has posted an ERA
of 1.65 (5 ER/27.1 IP), which ranks second in the NL, just behind
the Reds’ relievers (1.31). The bullpen, which ranked second in
the Majors in ERA (3.35), opponents’ batting average (.221) and
WHIP (1.16) in 2016, looks to once again be a team strength and
also leads the NL with a 0.88 combined WHIP and a 6.20
strikeout-to-walk ratio, striking out 31 (4th NL) against just five
walks. The bullpen has limited opponents to a .190 batting
average (19-for-100), which ranks third in the National League.
The Dodgers pitching staff overall has posted a National
League-best 1.05 WHIP, while ranking among the top
teams in the NL with a 2.97 ERA (23 ER/69.2 IP, 3rd) and
a .215 opponents’ batting average (3rd), while striking out
72 through eight games.
MAN OF THE IVY: Yasiel Puig has been successful in his 13
regular-season games at Wrigley Field with a .395/.490/.651
slashline, going 17-for-43 with 13 runs, three doubles, a triple,
two homers, six RBI and seven multi-hit games on the North Side
of Chicago. Overall, Puig has also been successful against the
Cubbies, going 26-for-62 with four doubles, a triple, three homers
and seven RBI in 19 games and leading active players (min. 50
PA) in career batting average (.419) and on-base percentage
(.493), while ranking third in slugging percentage (.661):
Active Batting Avg. Leaders vs. Cubs (min. 50 PA)
1. Yasiel Puig .419 (26-for-62)
2. Ian Kinsler .417
3. Christian Yelich .360
4. Paul Goldschmidt .360
5. Miguel Cabrera .354
Among Dodgers with a significant history at Wrigley
Field, Chase Utley (.309/.396/.505, 30-for-97, 8 2B, 2
HR, 15 RBI in 28 G) and Adrián González (.348
OBP/.557 SLG, 7 2B, 10 HR, 24 RBI in 38 G) have
enjoyed success at the oldest ballpark in baseball during
the regular season.
PARTY HEARTY: The Dodgers would like to wish very happy
belated birthdays to pitcher Kenta Maeda and hitting coach
Turner Ward, who both got to celebrate on the day off
yesterday. Maeda turned 29 and Ward is now 52.
ON THE HILL: Right-hander Brandon McCarthy will make
his second start of the season tonight, following a stellar outing
on April 6 in a 10-2 victory over the Padres. In that contest,
McCarthy allowed just two runs, four hits and a walk over 6.0
innings, running his career record against San Diego to 8-1. Last
season, McCarthy went 2-3 with a 4.95 ERA in 10 games (nine
starts) for Los Angeles, as he made his way back from April 20,
2015 Tommy John surgery.
McCarthy is 0-1 in three-career games against the Cubs
(two starts), all at Wrigley Field. His last outing on the
North Side came on April 22, 2014 as a member of the
Arizona Diamondbacks and he lost, giving up five runs
(one earned) in 5.0 innings. Anthony Rizzo and Justin
Grimm were the only members of the current Cubs
playing on that day.
TRAYCING HIS MOVEMENTS: Dodger outfielder Trayce
Thompson landed safely in Chicago this afternoon and will be
recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take the active roster
spot of Franklin Gutierrez, who will be placed on the 10-day
disabled list (retroactive to April 11) with a strained left
hamstring. Last year, Thompson batted .225 with 13 homers and
32 RBI before having his season cut short due to two stress
fractures in his back. In Triple-A this season, the 26-year-old
California native was still searching for his first knock, going 0-
for-10 in his first four games.
THE 40-MAN IS COMPLETE: After sitting at 39 players on
the 40-man roster since the beginning of Spring Training, the
Dodgers made a deal Monday to get back to 40. Los Angeles
acquired right-handed pitcher Joe Gunkel from Baltimore in
exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Gunkel, 25, has posted a 28-25 career record with a 3.30 ERA in
99 games (65 starts) over four professional seasons with the Red
Sox (2013-15) and Orioles’ (2015-16) organizations. Last season,
he pitched for Baltimore’s Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A
Bowie, combining to go 8-14 with a 4.02 ERA in 28 starts. The
Boynton Beach, Florida, native, was originally selected by the
Red Sox in the 18th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out
of West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
A SPECIAL DAY: Tickets are still available for Saturday’s 6:10
p.m. game against the Diamondbacks, where the Dodgers will
unveil and dedicate the brand new Jackie Robinson statue. The
statue will be housed outside the left field reserve level and a
ceremony will take place in the afternoon featuring the Robinson
family, Dodger owner Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Dodger
President and CEO Stan Kasten and Hall of Famer Frank
Robinson. The ceremony will be emceed by Kevin Frazier and is
expected to also be attended by Sandy Koufax, Vin Scully and
Don Newcombe. The entire ceremony will be broadcasted live
on SportsNet LA, AM 570 LA Sports and Dodgers.com.
The first 40,000 fans in attendance on Saturday will
receive a mini replica of the statue, presented by Bank of
America. Visit dodgers.com/promotions to purchase
tickets and view the entire promotions schedule.
