Seneca College Objectives

• Applied research resource for external entities• Increase advanced applied research activities • Foster partnerships • Provide advanced research opportunities for

faculty • Encourage external participation and involvement

in Seneca College activities

“SMART Clothing”

Integrating Technology into Clothing making it “Smart” such that the

quality of life is significantly enhanced.

Page 4: Applied Research Initiative

Medical

• an environmental sensor tests the surrounding air for allergens to warn individuals with asthma problems.

• a built in timer signals when to take necessary medication such as insulin, drugs.

• sensors in the garment monitor a patients heart rate, perspiration level indication overexertion.

• transmitter indicates when an Alzheimer's patient wanders too far from a safe area.

Page 5: Applied Research Initiative

Safety

• person under attack/duress presses a panic button in garment to send audio and video signal to remote monitoring location

• 'sniffer' sensors determine air quality in hazardous environments such as mines

• ‘sniffer’ sensors detect biological hazards such as anthrax

Page 6: Applied Research Initiative

Safety continued

• sensing body temperature (in extreme temperature environment) turns on a heater/cooler in garment which allows air to regulation of air temperature

• monitor dehydration/hydration • should persons become trapped, a transmitted

signal would summon rescue personnel • deploy emergency oxygen supply upon demand

Page 7: Applied Research Initiative

Personal

• garments have a global positioning systems (GPS) informing occupant of whereabouts al all times.

• garments of 10 or more can be wirelessly networked, with audio, video and digital capability, keeping everyone in touch

• light emitting diodes (LEDs), light emitting plasma are incorporated in a manner which complements

• change colour/camouflage based on environmental conditions such as snow or jungle

• style and fashion.

Page 8: Applied Research Initiative

Power Source

• powered by a series of rechargeable batteries

• incorporated into the garment in an unobtrusive location

• flexible solar panel on shoulders to facilitate charging batteries

• possess 110 v. recharging capability
