An innovative, inspiring and inclusive students’ union MDXSU, Middlesex University Students’ Union, is at the heart of everything that happens at Middlesex. Our vibrant and dedicated team are working together, developing a world-class partnership with Middlesex University, and striving to be the most innovative, inspiring and inclusive students’ union in the UK by 2020.

On the front line of defending vocational education, MDXSU has emerged as one of most exciting and dynamic students’ unions – working hard to make change happen each and every moment of the year. Building on our successes we are totally transforming the opportunities and experiences open for students at Middlesex. MDXSU has completely transformed the student experience – negotiating and delivering a £500,000 refurbishment of the social space on campus, winning free NUS cards for all first year students putting some £2million back in their pockets, employing students in over 100 paid and flexible living wage jobs, delivering 24 hour access to university facilities, raising the standards of student accommodation and housing, setting up a student-designed free cycle hire scheme, offering free sanitary items and even securing a freeze in tuition fees for current Middlesex students.

We are campaigning, securing and delivering student-led change that has made a real difference to the lives of all at Middlesex. We are powered by students. With all of our work designed with and delivered by students through our sector-leading internship model as well as our 450, elected, active and passionate student leaders on campus and beyond in the local community. Our innovative work with student leadership includes a yearly three day residential to help students learn new skills and to develop themselves and others around them – building the leaders of the future.

We are shaping the academic experience – campaigning to keep Wednesday afternoons free, extending anonymous marking, re-shaping the curriculum by championing a world-class partnership between students and staff at the university, re-designing the university’s Student Voice mechanisms and advocating for over 300 individual students when they are in need of support and guidance through our Independent Student Advice Service.

We are making Middlesex an active campus - offering a growing student events programme with over 60 events in our Welcome period alone, launching the very first end of year summer festival, supporting hundreds of student-led events throughout the year and running a monthly sell-out House Party. We have over 70 academic and interest based societies giving opportunities to some 1500 students every year. We have launched a Zero Tolerance, anti-harassment and Islamophobia campaign, as well as campaigning for more gender-neutral facilities– making campus safer and better for everyone.

We are rooted in our communities - reaching out into Barnet, MDXSU has pioneered what it means to be a students’ union rooted in its local area. From campaigning and securing the safe relocation of 50 Syrian refugees into Barnet, to launching a monthly student-led MDX Home Community Kitchen for local homeless people and developing some 100 living-wage community placements – we have ensured our students can give back and contribute to the development and growth of North London, beyond our campus borders, and to play our part in vibrant and diverse communities all across London and beyond in the student movement.

Now, we are going even further with an ambitious agenda to develop a strong vibrant democracy, to represent every single student on every course in every school and to champion equality and diversity across our community – with student leadership and development at the heart of everything we do. We would love for you to join us and help us on this journey. Our staff are our most valuable resource in making this journey possible – and as a result working in a values-driven and dynamic organisation is a truly rewarding experience, with flexible working arrangements and a significant commitment to personal development.

You will find much more information in this pack but and if you would like to speak to someone about the role please contact Raechel Mattey, Deputy Chief Executive ([email protected]) and the deadline for applications is 4pm on Thursday 15th June 2017; we look forward to receiving your application.

What does MDXSU do, and where do you fit in? MDXSU is an independent charity run by students for students; it supports, represents and improves the student experience for the 18,000 students studying here at Middlesex University. The University is based on the recently redeveloped campus in Hendon, North London, and is the only large single-campus university in the area. MDXSU consists of a highly talented, highly motivated and high performing team of people. Our recent staff engagement survey showed 88% of our staff feel positively and engaged with the organisation. 100% of our people believe that our organisation treats people equally irrespective of ethnicity, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation or religion. Staff at MDXSU are 10% more likely to recommend it as a good place to work compared to the whole of the third sector. We have a strong commitment supporting our staff to grow and develop within the role and the organisation, all staff are encouraged and supported to identify training opportunities and conferences that will assist with their personal development.

MDXSU, like all students’ unions, is unique in the way

that it operates as an organisation. We are led by a four

Student Officers who are elected by all students at the

university to represent them and lead the students’

union.

At Middlesex we have a President and four Vice

Presidents; each representing a number of schools at the

university - Art & Design and Media & Performing Arts,

Business and Law, Health & Education and Science &

Technology.

Our officers are elected by Middlesex students every

February/March, and the delivery of their priorities and

manifesto promises are assisted by our MDXSU staff

team and volunteers. Working within a democratically-

run organisation is both a unique and exciting

opportunity and highly rewarding.
