Flow-Quip Self-Contained, Solar Powered and Wireless Gate Valve Actuator System This unique gate valve actuator has undergone recent successful field testing at a PEMEX terminal facility in Nuevo Pemex, Mexico. It is powered by the integral solar panel and incorporates the latest technology in wireless communication.

Electrical power from the top mounted solar panel is used to generate DC electrical power. A DC driven hydraulic pack then stores pressure in a hydro-pneumatic accumulator. When a shutdown signal is received from the remote SCADA control the system draws stored hydraulic power from the accumulator to operate the pipeline valve. Once the valve has been operated the solar power system starts the hydraulic power pack to regenerate stored energy and wait for the next command.

A “low power” wireless communication system allows the actuator to communicate with the SCADA system up to three miles away. It also can receive signals from local transmitters to monitor pipeline pressure, flow, valve position and other alarms. The wireless communication system is autonomous.

An optional back up air driven hydraulic power system is also included to generate hydraulic pressure from a nitrogen bottle or air compressor unit.

hydraPAK SE Series Actuator converts High Performance Butterfly Valve to Pump Check Valve Service When water hammer, reverse flow or pump backspin can cause expensive damage to pumps and piping systems this SR-Series rotary actuator can provide precise flow regulation on all types of pumping installations. Motorized opening of the valve can be time adjusted to the exact speed of operation required. When the pump stops a powerful spring closes the valve at an adjustable rate to prevent reverse flow and pump backspin. For normal open and closing during pump shutdown the SR unit operates as a conventional mo-torized valve. When automatic reverse flow protection is required the actuators powerful spring rotates the valve disc closed at the exact preset time to prevent water hammer.





hydraPAK SR Series Actuators Automate Refinery Critical Shut Off Valves A group of fire-safe Velan ball valves, ranging in size from 6” to 16”, are fitted with SR-Series (spring return) Rotary fail-safe actuators. Opening of each valve is powered by 3-phase electrical power. On loss of a 24 VDC control signal, all valves are quickly closed by the actuator’s power-ful internal spring. These valves were installed at a major refinery near Borger, Texas.

hydraPAK SE Series Actuator Protect at a Critical Jet Fuel Pipeline, supplying the Denver Airport This SR-Series Rotary unit is self-contained and mounted on a 12”- 600# Cameron full port ball valve. When the pipeline SCADA system signals an upset or loss of pressure condition the actua-tors powerful self-contained spring powers the valve closed to stop pipeline flow. This is one of several pipeline valve sites linked by satellite (a satellite dish is visible in the back-ground).

hydraPAK SE Series Actuator Automates River Crossing Pipeline Valves in Brazil As part of a wide ranging project to upgrade pipeline safety in Brazil, SE Series actuators have been selected to perform critical shutdown service on remote pipeline valves. Thousands of miles of older pipelines are being upgraded with SCADA systems and safety shutdown ac-tuators if pipeline breaks occur. The SE Series units offers reliable and powerful automation of product and crude oil pipeline valves from solar power, with hydraulic stored energy for multiple valve strokes when needed. This valve site is in the Amazon River region of northern Brazil. The site solar collector can be seen atop a mounting mast near the actuator. The pipeline ball valve is buried and only the stem extension is visible above ground.





hydraPAK SE Series Actuator Maintains Pressure in So. California Pipeline When power outages or earthquakes occur this SE Series Rotary actuator closes quickly to main-tain positive pressure in a critical water pipeline. The complete SE-Series (stored energy) actua-tor is mounted on a 20” DeZurik Plug Valve. An integral PLC controller controls valve stroking speed (fast for an emergency condition, slow for normal operation). Hydraulic energy is stored in the actuator and it can stroke the valve up to 5 times without electrical power.


hydraPAK SE Series Actuator completes final testing… ready for shipment to Ecuador Eighteen of these 16”-1500# Grove ball valves are fitted with hydraPAK SE Series actuators for pipeline shutdown service on the ARCO Villano project in Ecuador. They are connected to the pipeline SCADA system and provide reliable automation of these high pressure pipeline block valves, using site solar-panel-generated power. This photo was taken during hydrostatic testing of the valve at maximum differential pressure to verify full torque output and adequate storage of hydraulic energy for multiple cycles of the valve without motor power. Each actuator contains stored energy for 5 strokes of the valve without recharging.

hydraPAK SE Series Valve Automation Systems Perform High in the Andes Mountains, Powered by the Wind and the Sun High in the Andes Mountains between Argentina and Chile, fourteen valve sites are connected by fiber optic cable to the pipeline command center. Solar panels provide power for the station during the summer months and a turbine wind generator takes over during the winter. A control building houses the communication equipment and the Flow-Quip Hydraulic Power Unit (upper right). The 16” pipeline is buried but the Flow-Quip hydraulic actuator mounted on the valve extension can be seen above grade (upper left).

hydraPAK SE Series Gate Valve Actuator systems ready for pipeline service in the Colorado Mountains These M&J through conduit Gate Valves were fitted at our Tulsa plant with SE Series linear actua-tors and hydraulic power units. When these gate valves are installed in the pipeline they will be connected to the 24 VDC SCADA system and available for remote control even though commer-cial 3-Phase power is not available. Each power unit is mounted inside a site building and stores hydraulic energy for three complete strokes of the valve. After operation the small DC motor and pump system recharges the hydrau-lic accumulators and the system stands ready for the next valve operation sequence.




Type: SE SERIES STORED ENERGY-LINEAR ADS No. 7211

hydraPAK SE Series Power Unit and Actuator in service operating a 30”-600# M&J Gate Valve at a remove valve site on a Canadian Pipeline This complete remote valve site automation system was shipped to Canada for the automation of a 30”-600# M&J Through Conduit Gate Valve. The valve is a mainline block valve on a crude oil pipeline and commercial electrical power is not available. The client utilized this powerful SE Series actuator system to operate of the valve with 24 VDC power. Two strokes of the valve are stored in hydraulic accumulators so no electric motor power is needed when the valve opera-tion is needed. The valve is controlled by the pipeline SCADA system housed in the green building. Numerous valve and system status alarm signals are provided to verify system readiness.

Type: LINEAR SE SERIES ADS No. 7207


SE Series Self-Contained Linear Gate Valve Actuator This Flow-Quip SE Series Linear actuator was delivered to a major pipeline company in Mt. Belvieu, Texas to be used for pipeline over pressure protection. The actuator utilizes a 24VDC hydraulic power module to generate and store hydraulic energy. When fail-safe operation is needed stored hydraulic energy provides power for valve operation. The unit pictured is mounted on a WKM PowerSeal pipeline gate valve and is capable of delivering up to 6 fail-safe valve strokes without electrical supply being available. A “Partial Stroke” feature is available to periodically confirm the actuator and valve are functioning properly by partially closing the valve with out having to visit the site or fully closing the valve. In addition hydraulic controls are incorporated into a single manifold. This greatly minimizing the possibility of hydraulic fluid leaks, and reduces the size and weight of the unit.




hydraPAK SR Series Actuators Protect Underground Storage Cavern Wells At an underground storage facility near Conway Kansas, these WKM fire-safe ball valves are actuated with SR Series fail-safe actuators. One valve is in the product flow line and the other is in the brine flow line. If a fire or product leak occurs both actuators quickly block flow into and out of each underground well. These actuators, along with thirty eight more were installed and connected to the site safety monitoring system. Electronic detectors monitor leakage of product to atmosphere or into the brine flow lines. Fire and combustible gas detectors continuously monitor the brine pit to insure safe operation.




Type: manPOWER SERIES ROTARY ADS No. 7402A

manPOWER Series Actuator used for Critical Pump Station Emergency Shut-down Service This manPOWER Series actuator is headed for an Illinois products pipeline terminal. Manually operating the actuator’s hand pump will open the valve and allow petroleum products to flow. A 24 VDC signal connects the actuator to the terminal safety system. On Loss of DC signal, the actuator’s powerful self-contained spring will automatically close the valve, stopping pipeline flow. A high visibility, position indicator beacon and limit switch signals the terminal SCADA system when the valve has operated.




Type: manPOWER SERIES ROTARY ADS No. 7402B

hydraPAK manPOWER™ Actuator used for Critical Pump Station Emergency Shutdown Service The manPOWER Series actuator is shown from the opposite view with the access door open and the manual hydraulic pump in operation. The stainless steel enclosure is lockable and keeps all hydraulic controls secure. The hydraulic reservoir and system pressure gauge can be seen along with the closing speed control and auto/manual selector valve. An explosion proof junction box houses the control solenoid valve and a local manual reset button. The system is also fitted with a eutectic sensor (extending from the hydraulic cylinder) that will automatically cause valve closure if fire causes a high temperature condition.




Type: M Drive™ - LINEAR ADS No. 7301A

Flow-Quip M Drive™ Solar Powered Actuator System Automates Remote Gate Valve Ready for shipment to a pipeline system in northern New Mexico, this M Drive actuator system provides remote valve automation for a Grove through-conduit gate valve where electrical power is not available. The solar collector is sized to power the SCADA system RTU and to keep the M-Drive batteries charged. When a signal is received to close this valve, a DC motor-driven, bi-directional, fluid drive system powers the valve to the proper position. End-of-stroke limit switches stop the motor drive and signal valve position to the SCADA system.


The M Drive™ Power Module supplies the Fluid Drive for the Hydraulic Actuator mounted on the Valve The Power Module (shown here with the lockable door open) contains the complete fluid drive system for powering the valve open and closed. All electrical and hydraulic controls are housed within the enclosure and space may be provided for the customer supplied RTU unit. A technician operates the separate manual pump. This back up pump is useful during site start up and when battery levels are low. Note: In the bottom of the cabinet two connectors are provided for 12 VDC truck battery power.



Type: M Drive™ - LINEAR ADS No. 7301B


Flow-Quip Solar Powered SE Series Gate Valve Actuator System protects critical Pipelines in Northern Peru. Children from a local village play outside of this crude oil pipeline river-crossing valve site. It’s over 75 miles from the nearest road. Access to this site is only by helicopter or by small boat. During the rainy season, river levels rise to flood the site under up to 4 feet of water. Pipeline breaks from river currents and sabotage have made this Flow-Quip SE Series Actuator System a critical part of the pipeline safety system. Solar panels provide all site power; they can be seen extending above the walk-in Power Module. An INMARSAT satellite antenna is utilized for communication with the pipeline dispatcher (over 100 miles away). The Flow-Quip hydraulic actuator was field-mounted on the buried pipeline gate valve when the system was installed. Pipeline pressure is monitored, along with a linebreak sensor which monitors rate of pressure drop. Loss of pressure or rapid depressurization will trigger the system to close automatically.

Solar Powered SR Series Actuator Protects Oklahoma Products Pipeline at Navigable River Channel Headed for a pipeline valve site where commercial power is unavailable, this solar powered, SR Series rotary unit will permit remote shutoff of a critical products pipeline if damage occurs from barge traffic or heavy rains. Solar electrical energy is used to generate hydraulic pressure. This hydraulic pressure is used to hold the valve open and compress a powerful, self-contained spring. If valve closure is required, hydraulic pressure is released and the spring quickly closes the valve, preventing further loss of product.


M Drive™ Solar Powered Actuators protect Product Pipe-lines in Argentina Thirty-Nine of these systems were field installed on existing 24” pipeline through conduit gate valves in northern Argentina. They were installed along with a new pipeline SCADA system, which allows the pipeline dispatcher to monitor pressures and flow at each valve site and close sectional block valves if needed. The large steel cabinet holds the M-Drive bi-directional fluid drive system and the SCADA RTU equipment. Batteries are provided for the RTU and satellite communication system. Electronic controls provide “slow cycle” closing of each valve (over 10 minutes) so that normal shutdown of the pipeline will not cause pressure shock to the 25 year old pipeline. A much faster time of operation is available for emergency shutdown. At each valve site powerful Flow-Quip Hydraulic Linear Actuators (lower right) were field mounted on existing through conduit gate valves.

Flow-Quip Solar Powered Hydraulic Power Unit ready for shipment to the PEMEX SCADA Pipeline Upgrade Project This power unit is one of a group of 84 Hydraulic Power Units (HPU) in service on the PEMEX SCADA pipeline project. They are utilized to automate existing pipeline block valves on the national LPG pipeline system. Flow-Quip worked closely with the SCADA system integrator to insure that each system interfaced properly with the central command center. Powered by solar panels at each valve site, hydraulic energy is stored in the nitrogen-charged accumulators for stroking each pipeline valve 4 complete open and closed cycles without motor power.

Flow-Quip ships SCADA Gas Project Valve Automation Systems on Time As a part of an $85 million dollar pipeline upgrade, 84 of these compact skid mounted hydraulic power units were shipped to Mexico for site installation and automation of 94 pipeline valves. They provide hydraulic energy for Flow-Quip gate valve and plug valve actuators fitted on each valve. Solar panels at each valve site are used to provide electrical power for hydraulic energy storage. Each system is connected to the new nationwide SCADA system to allow remote operation of the pipeline.



Type: SE SERIES SOLAR POWER ADS No. 7502


Servo Series Modulating Valve Control System controls pipeline flow with speed and precision Utilizing high accuracy electrohydraulic servo valve control, this Servo Series actuator system controls pipeline flow to limit pressure at a petroleum product tank farm near St. Louis. A rotary ball control valve was utilized to insure low pressure drop and a wide operating range. The cus-tomer’s electronic controllers monitor incoming flow and pressure, then send a 4-20 ma signal to the VPC system to protect downstream piping.

Type: SE SERIES ROTARY-SOLAR ADS No. 7206

SE Series units are readied for shipment to Petrobras Pipeline Valve Sites As a part of a nationwide pipeline upgrade project in Brazil a partial shipment of SE Series fail-safe actuators and MNA full port ball valves are readied for shipment. Each valve and actuator will be installed in older pipelines at river crossings and near populated areas. They will be connected via a SCADA system to the pipeline control center. Solar collectors power these actuators and they store hydraulic energy for four valve strokes with-out recharge.




Type: HPU SERIES HYDRAULIC POWER UNIT ADS No. 7503

Flow-Quip Hydraulic Power Units ready for Shipment to California Water Pipeline Project A partial shipment of Hydraulic Power Units is shown ready for shipment to California for block valve automation on a high pressure water pipeline. Working closely with the California Department of Water resources engineering group, Flow-Quip designed and built eight of these highly sophisticated hydraulic power units (HPU’s). All of the HPU’s are installed in underground vaults at valve sites and connected to the pipeline DCS system via Modbus communication system. Each HPU contains an extensive PLC control and communication system.




Type: SE Series Gate Valve Actuator ADS No. 7210

SE Series fail-safe gate valve actuator protects critical east coast jet fuel supply QUEENS, NY. - A linear SE Series actuator was recently placed in service at the port of New York City. This critical pipeline delivery station is the primary supplier of jet fuel to New York’s La Guardia airport. A Flow-Quip field engineer is shown above placing the SE Series actuator in service on a WKM Power Seal gate valve. During regular operation the gate valve remains fully open and the SE actuator is used for open and close operation when the station is shutdown.




Type: SE SERIES Rotary Actuator ADS No. 7211

Fourteen SE Series fail-safe ball valve actuators insure pipeline shutdown for deep water Gulf of Mexico production platforms OFFSHORE, La. - Fourteen SE Series rotary actuators (see insert photo) are in service operating high pressure ball valves on deep water platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. These “stored energy” actuators were selected because they could properly sequence special retractable seat ball valves and they stored energy for fail-safe operation when a platform shutdown was needed. Because of the marine atmosphere and critical environmental concerns Flow-Quip manufactured these actuators in strict accordance with the materials, painting and biodegradable hydraulic fluid specifications mandated by the customer.




Type: SE SERIES GATE VALVE ACTUATOR WITH HPU ADS No. 7213

Flow-Quip type SE Gate Valve actuator system operates M&J CEG valves for ConocoPhillips Two of these SE-Series systems were placed in service recently on 24” M&J CEG gate valves at ConocoPhillips tank farm facility in Glenpool Oklahoma. The hydraulic power unit supplies power and stored energy for two valves. Each valve is equipped with control solenoids, limit switches, and an electrical junction box for field connections. A portable hydraulic power unit was provided to be used if electrical power is not available.
